If you have even a passing interest in historics, I'd recommend Warhames Illustrated or Soldiers and Strategy. The articles are often really well written, battle reports, modeling advice, scenarios. The lot.

When I first got into warhammer way back 2004ish my neighbours son is who got me into it and he already had a white dwarf subscription, and he would let me loose on his literal mountain of the magazines. I can't imagine my love for the hobby would be where its at if not for white dwarf.
I'm a bit older than you and I started 40k at the end of 2nd edition. At the time the internet was a much different and smaller place. The White Dwarf magazine was a great way for you to get a monthly dose of content that wasn't really available anywhere else. The magazine was only a few dollars, which put it in a really affordable price range for a JR high student. The magazines came with things like cardboard terrain. One even had a cardboard fire prism conversion turret! You punched it out of card, glued it together, and stuck it on your eldar falcon turret. At the time they made a lot more sense and were a great value.
Remember going to the store and asking the store owner (on his Pentium 1 PC) if there was anything new on the BBS, because he had internet at the store. Or one day being gifted a print out of the entire dark millenium warhead cards section?
I remember having one that had a step by step instruction on how to turn a falcon into a wave serpent with plasticard because they didn't have a kit for it.
I'm surprised you hadn't looked at the magazines. They're pretty nice and each magazine has loads of inspiration material to assist you with painting ideas. Not even counting the direct painting tutorials, I simply mean looking at painted stuff and thinking "that would be awesome to do". The KT box is kind of a bummer for me. I'll get a couple CSM upgrade sprues from an eldar player. I wanted to be hype for this box, thinking cultists would be in it. But it's hard to be excited about just an upgrade sprue.

I feel like the main reason they're showing 10 CSMs in the previews is because there's 10 CSMs in the regular box, so they're probably just giving you a little extra you can pick and choose from so they don't have to redesign the sprews.

That sweet Naomi Steele takes a look through each White Dwarf issue as they come out, I love her enthusiasm and her pleasant, melodic voice as she comments and reviews minis and articles and nice to know WD still has useful articles and it's not just a catalog of stuff and things. I used to read White Dwarf (starting with infamous issue 127) all the time, couldn't get enough of it! There is a surviving copy of the very first issue of White Dwarf magazine enshrined at the GW store in West Palm Beach, Florida. The manager is a GW and 40k historian.
I remember, when Mordheim was released, White Dwarf had several months with new warbands, character, terrain, missions... it was so cool. Also, if you subscribed for a year, you got Mordheim or Necromunda as a gift! 🤯
If you want all of the Kill Team rules, then you need Issues 468 and 469, which feature Kill Teams for Adeptus Mechanicus and Thousand Suns, respectively. (That's the only reason that I bought those issues as well.)
When I saw the chaos kill team I can see someone putting the smiling head on the HW marine, and a creepier head on the sergeant, who wants a happy sergeant.
That would actually be a cool idea for a video. Go through all the GW games and talk about the basics of each and the cost and process of getting into it
When I was in High School, we used to play LoTR Battle Companies which were published in White Dwarf. I agree that in today's hobby environment they could be seen as a relic, but they are a good way to publish new rules such as for Kill Team.

I'm just sad we won't be getting grey knights vs death guard alongside the chaos gate release. A new strike or interceptor squad is needed, a DG upgrade sprue would be fun, and I know its really clear they're just gonna keep recycling terrain for these boxes now but I'd really love to see some professionally made fleshy nurgle terrain.
I am hoping for elite Tyranids. New plastic lictors, yes please. In a catachan jungle themed box release, with cool modular jungle terrain and jungle fighters. A man can hope, can't he? Nids deserve some TLC.
About the boards they are re-used from ork box speed freaks, and nachmund is battlezone mechanicus and chalnath is sector imperialis they are just reusing existing terrain sinds the first box.
Ouch, way to make me feel my age - I was reading Realm of Chaos: The Lost and the Damned in high school... I haven't read White Dwarf in quite a while (it's nice to hear it is still a legit magazine, not a catalogue) but used to get it every month back in the day, and honestly I doubt I'd have become the 40k fan I am without it (I'm not just saying that because I had an article published one time). You really should look up some old PDFs (by completely legitimate means of course) - it's wild to look back from this age of Forge World to when GW's official magazine had an article on 'here's how to make a Space Marine grav tank out of an empty shampoo bottle'.
I can tell you one of those views on the Andy Serkis video was from me. He comes across as a really laid back guy, genuinely interested and the interview was interesting too. I know most people don't even recognize the man because he's most well known for motion capture work (Kong, Ceasar and of course, Gollum, but also Monkey, from the game Enslaved: Odyssee to the West, where he even has a IRL rol in the final cutscene).
Oh man, I bought my first issue of White Dwarf in about 236 years... I used to read it when I was at Primary School, I used to love reading about them more than the models themselves, lol.
I am glad that they are finally putting out the Chaincannon for standard CSM. In the codex, you can take a chaincannon in your CSM units but there has been no model for that until now. Industrious folks bought 3rd party chaincannon prints and kitbashed them onto CSM Heavy Bolter models, but I think most people just went without. Knowing GW, there will be 1 chaincannon on the upgrade sprue and if you want more than that, you have to buy more sprues. ... or you can just print them off a dozen at a time or buy them already printed and put them on your existing models easy peasy.
the interesting thing about warhammer is i think its MUCH more mainstream then their profits actually show i think a large number of people love warhammer, but dont buy models cos they dont like modeling/painting speaking anecdotally, of my friendgroup i am the only one who collects warhammer miniatures, but i have 5 friends all of whom love the lore of one setting or other but none of whome collect any models, they all loved text to speach, they love the lore and the world and the characters and would watch any warhammer shows in a heartbeat, they just dont do the modeling aspect so are sort of "hidden" i wouldnt be suprised if there was a mainstream show that it would be much more popular then the modeling hobby base shows

Not sure if you are aware Jay, but warhammer-vault has a hundred odd white dwarf issues from the last 11 years you can read if you did enjoy White Dwarf. You need a warhammer plus account, but assume you have one from what you said. Really surprised you haven't read old ones before with an affinity for old school Space Marines as they were all over the pages back in the day :) Probably stick to issues after 2016 when they rebooted it, but you might get inspired for some great content. Warhammer visions are the odd rule/source book are on there too. I know a lot of people who have Warhammer Plus don't know they get access to that too as the organisation is awful across multiple websites. I don't buy the magazine now as it is only 4 issues behind on there.
I think part of the reason the Andy Serkis vid didn’t quite explode is because the comments were turned off. Hear me out before you call me a tinfoil hatted baboon. Comments generate more interaction which is what the algorithm wants right? So how much interaction would Andy’s vids get if he were to do his videos with the comments on? He could have the people who play the Lord of the Rings war-gaming scene and the interaction from the 40k fandom all in his 2 vids. Might’ve generated a couple thousand more if you ask me.

Regarding terrain I liked how infinity’s terrain was sort of like Halo Forge maps where it was sort of various shapes that made the terrain features. Infinity is one of those games where I love ALL the models in ALL the ranges but won’t get into them because I dislike metal so much. But what I would like for 40k is some not imperial structure city shapes that sort of allow the same elements without it being like a castle or something. Like instead of a ruined building, you have a blasted out sphess redwood or something.
I really don’t like the terrain in the new KT box. But I do really like the warbands. Maybe I’ll buy the starter set and then buy the Corsairs when they come out later?
Old white dwarfs had articles on making terrain from crafting supplies. I’ve kept some of my favorite terrain issues from back then.
The original Cityfight codex was amazeballz for that.

White Dwarf has improved lately - the catalogue elements are minimal, and most of the content is actual content now.

The thing that convinced me to get WH+ was the back catalogue of White Dwarfs, a lot cheaper than getting a subscription to the magazine.
I used to read it as a kid. It had really cool narrative game modes, one with zombies and exploding catachan toads. Also it had plenty of mini games.

White Dwarf was wild in late mid/late 90s, early 00s. You can get them at eBay for a few bucks. I’ve got the German issue of every single 90s WD.
