Jason Everman squandered the early part of his youth playing in rock bands and commercial fishing in Alaska. He is a veteran of OIF/OEF, and has served in both Ranger Regiment and Special Forces. He played in three awesome bands: Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mind Funk. He financed Nirvana's first album and paid for the tour shirts so they could make a little money on the road. He's the predominant guitarist on the cover of Bleach. He shared the stage with Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain, Kim Thayill, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Dubar at various moments. He's Jason Everman.

I am an Afghanistan combat vet and this was really neat to hear his story and how he went from a rockstar to a soldier and he loves that he did. Specially when he talked about how you can talk about war, you can watch it on tv, you can read about it but you truly have no idea unless you are there and experience it first person. Super neat and god bless man.
I've always been fascinated with Jason's story. He seems like a very intelligent and humble guy. Much respect.

Im commenting using my wife's sign on email because I don't normally comment on social media. Anyhow, got to meet Jason Everman in Kuwait as we were ramping up for the invasion.. Turns out we were co located in the same building and I discovered his presence purely by accident. Got to hear a first hand account of Kurt writing my fav Nirvana song (About a Girl) from Jason. Sadly, I left country a couple days later. Without a doubt, the most surreal memory I have in my 20 year military career and definitely the coolest.... Jason, glad you made it through the war (so did I)..... Wish you the best in future endeavors. It was really awesome to meet you.....
If it weren't for you maybe Nirvana would never have recorded Bleach, and Soundgarden wouldn't have your unique bass tone. You contributed a lot to both bands. Thank you Jason! Greetings from Brazil.

I played in a punk band, if you want to call it that, with Jason in High School. He was a good kid, pretty quiet, still learning guitar, and not someone you thought would accomplish so much. If you read this Jason congrats on your accomplishments in this crazy world....tell Mimi Jim said Hi! Glad you followed your bliss.
probably does, but it's not. Bands name was Nonsocial. We were just a bunch of kids at a small school in Poulsbo WA. Ben Shepherd of Soundgarden was going there at the same time and was already a talented punk rock musician. Ben's brother Andy had a decent band as well, used to watch them practice after school in film study class. Got me into DK, D.O.A., Black Flag, etc.

I hung out w/ Jason too. We met when he was traveling in Germany in 1987. I introduced him to some local friends and he stuck around for several months.

Was happy to be a part of your past with our group of friends back in the day in the Bainbridge Island/ Poulsbo/ Kingston areas. Great speech Jason nice to have learned about you in the military too and great comparison as well to the punk rock.
He's giving you an honest piece of his life and his experiences. You don't have to agree or disagree, just listen. I find it very interesting, it would be fun to listen to him one on one. I sometime wish that I could have had those kinds of convictions and experiences.

This fellow is an exact example of folks I call "The Quiet Ones". Know a fellow for years and never get a glint of his amazing accomplishments. They tend to have a glow, even while avoiding spotlights.
Something small in this entire speech that I was just reminded of. Don't ever judge a book by its cover. The most unassuming looking individuals could be the most stone hard badasses.
I saw Jason on the Lemmy documentary and the 1st thought that entered my mind was 'someone should do a documentary on Jason'. A really interesting and righteous dude

In the NY Times profile on Jason, the author said Jason is one of the most guarded people he's ever met. I doubt Jason would care much for a big spotlight being shined on him like a documentary would.

Hey SFC Everman, your not alone, I too am a SSG in the US Army and now at 11 years TIS. Punk rock drew me into a world then split when I joined the Army at 20. I have been through so much, and must say I am still punk rock but now so far torn between what I am and who I used to be. I respect you for the person that you are and should say thank you for being a fellow brother in arms. but now pick up a guitar and jam , its so relieving from the daily grind of roger roger roger!!!!. your right the word brother is something earned. TheTacomajoe: We used to sing Punk Rock songs, while on detail, when in Jump School (C Co. 1/507th PIR 1988)... mostly Ramones, but we shared other Punk Rock songs regularly. I'm starting to think it's a Ft. Benning thing...

Wow! Just watched mr. Everman's bio on TH-cam. Very impressed. He may not be the quintessential rock star but he is definitely a war hero and without his help nirvana may have never gained their footing to become so huge. I am definitely a fan of his now. My son Bret graduated from ft Benning also. He was based in Washington at ft Lewis after boot camp. In a Stryker brigade. Thanks for your service my friend. I'm a pro musician also. Opened for Motorhead, bls, dope, many others. By the way I'm a double amputee drummer....

It's funny I saw this before I made a decision to enlist because I felt the same way dissatisfied with everything, still am, but I met my amazing wife and now she's pregnant and I can't regret it because she's my everything, but still I want to thank Jason, without you I wouldn't have met her and I did meet some awesome brothers along the way.
I feel like I did this in reverse. I joined a drum corps here in Germany. Although it’s music it has all the discipline and human relationship aspects of the military. For work I tried something else at first but felt like him unaccomplished and always searching. Now I’m a music teacher and performer. I always loved the music, but the discipline and order changed everything back in the drum corps days.

You can kind of tell that when he talks about music he misses it, he misses a time of innocence and joy; seems like he saw some bad shit in combat that stuck with him and will forever, he focuses a lot on his time serving

9:57 and I want to know more about this man. Serving in the military not only made me grow up but shaped my future and in a way shaped my daughters. Punk rock is one bond that my brother and I share, never thought that would happen, weird how things workout.

I joined the military and became an Air Force clerk a long time ago after playing for a while in shitty no-name bands that went nowhere. This fellow joined the special forces after playing with Nirvana and Soundgarden.

Not only Nirvana and Soundgarden, I actually bumped into this guy the 1st time as a Bassist for Old Lady Drivers " musical dimensions of sleastak" - an album I´ve always found great - he does a great job there as a bass player ... this tends to get overshadowed by the other bands he´s been in , of course, yet , without any doubt I find his time as OLD´s bass player to be his best accomplishment in music .
Steve Myers dude you are nowhere near this guys level. You were a pencil pusher and he was kicking ass and slaying bodies. You aren’t a “renaissance man” in any way. So shut the fuck up and don’t even try to make the comparison.

It's crazy how after a lifetime of gear achievement, almost 30 years later he's still most well known for playing guitar in a band for a short amount of time years before they even made it big. Even though he never recorded with Nirvana, the world might've never gotten Nirvana at the level that we did if it weren't for Everman since he's the one that paid the sub pop fee to release the Bleach.

Tremendous respect and infinite thanks for his service to our country and contribution to the history of rock 'n roll and in particular, a certain band that changed my life and helped form my sense of humanity and artistic principles. Were it not for him stepping up when he didn't have to and pay for that recording session, who knows.
Yep, WUSC here in Columbia, SC had hardcore night one night a week in the 80's too, I would record it with a jambox cassette player/recorder. Ended up going to see Black Flag when I was 14 which was a life changing experience

I would never think that Jason Everman, passed from a punk rocker to a militar dude, i mean, when i knew i was like blown away.
For me - after I joined many of my ex punk/hardcore band mates went on to play for big name world touring bands- bands I know you know. I still wouldn't change the experience I had from the Army. Forever I thought I was crazy for feeling that way until just now, thanks.

So amazing.. Not in one, but two bands, that went on to become incredibly famous. Fun fact.. When Jason was nirvana Seco d guitarist they had the rawest sound ever. He was actually a great guitarist so him with Kurt was incredible. I recommend watching nirvana live at Rhino Records.. Specifically negative creep. Jason's guitar is soooo metal, it still gives me goosebumps.
I’m going through the same dilemma right now. I’m playing in an awesome punk band right now. We just got done with a small U.S tour and we’re heading to Japan in September and Europe in October followed by a massive U.S tour for the next 5 months before probably heading back to Europe for the summer. But I’ve been having this desire to join the Army and pursue the same path as Jason. I think about it everyday. It’s always on my mind. I’m 26 now and I don’t want to be 30 and join the military. But I want to be Special Forces. On top of that I want the structure and discipline in my life. I don’t know what to do really.
There are no righteous wars anymore. Do you want blood on your hands? Iskilling innocent people worth the comradery?

If the Army knows you want to deploy, they won't send you any further than the deepest, darkest North Carolina. You'll be stuck at Bragg until you give up and ETS.

The title is a bit misleading. It reads like Punk had some profound insight into joining the service. It should read," Got Tired of Touring With Bands, So I Joined The Military."
I don't think you read between the lines, and it was too short to articulate his experiences and why they were noteworthy spiritually. how he wasn't happy, and needed to fill holes in his soul. He found this sense of purpose and brotherhood in the military with his brothers, learned more about himself through those experiences than living a normal life. IT's hard to understand that unless you've been through it. So it makes sense you wouldn't understand, not to offend you just saying.
Ever have some experience or been searching for some experience that was so life changing and deep that you thank god you were blessed to have experienced it? but somehow cannot put into words what this greatness is? thats what he was trying to get across i think.

CJB b When he was in Nirvana (or maybe in Soundgarden, I don't exactly remember) the other band members considered him a total mooder and a very instable person, very negative for the band. I read an article about him years ago.
@@MLCrow yeah cause he wasn’t sitting around doped up with them, so of course he was a “mooder” to them.....if he was “unstable” he would’ve not become a green beret...period....I don’t think you understand just what this man has accomplished....it blows anything nirvana and sound garden has done out of the water, period....regardless of how many records or how much money they made....it doesn’t hold a candle to what green berets accomplish just in training, let alone over seas....
This is kinda like my life’s story so far except I’m not as successful. I’ve played music bounced around traveling worked construction got a scholarship to play soccer in college now I’m thinking about going the navy to become a Seabee at 35. Not happy yet but I’m proud I’ve at least lived an interesting life. Thanks for the video, I appreciate the sentiment more than you know

What i find fascinating about Everman is the relative metric of 'Success'. A lot of people would see him as a 'Failure' that missed the boat with Nirvana. But Success and happiness is completely relative to the Individual.
Wow,amazing,always wondered what happened to him,he didn't even mention nirvana,or soundgarden,I never even knew he was in soundgarden ,I started listening to them in 91 or 92,he was out by then,
His story is pretty incredible,rock star to war vet,🤘I mean if your not happy or fulfilled doing what your doing then figure out whats going to make you feel happy,some people go their whole lives trying to find there place,

His story is similar to mine. I played in a fairly popular So Cal hardcore band "Final Conflict" in the 80s. By the time I was 22 I was bored of the scene and joined the U.S. Army. I served from 87 to 08 as an Infantryman. 30th AG is where I started in November 1987. I never lost my individuality. I had a lot of fun and did some really cool shit. When we crossed the berm on 24 February 1991 in to Iraq we had Slayer's "War Ensemble" blasting in our vehicle. I served in Iraq 03/04 and 05/06. I went back to playing drums in 2009 and still play in a punk band today.
