Andy Latimer has least the same span than Dave Gilmour, but unfortunately is way underrated. Both have very sensitive and instinctive styles. Dig deeper into Camel, you won't regret it
Camel's lyrics, melodies, and the hole vibe are more poetic
while Pink Floyd is more melancholic.
Can't really choose which one I have enjoyed more over the years. Camel's very underrated compared to Pink Floyd n such, and it put's smile on my face seeing more people discovering it.

The snow goose is a masterpiece ! hello from France
One of the vastly overlooked classic 70's prog bands. A great , largely vocal-free album The snow goose. Their album ' Nude ' has amazing sound quality. Try listening to ' Lies ' from said album. Loving your passion and enthusiasm Nick and Lex. 🤩
I don't recall any lyrics. I do recall the original album being with an orchestra, tho :-)
Mirage was my introduction to them way back in the mid 70’s.
At the time I thought how did this band escape me?

Huge Camel fan here in Baltimore! They’ve always been to me… in addition to my love for Yes, ELP, Kansas, and prog in general… one of my absolute faves!
Never got to see them live - a big disappointment!
Even back in the day, they recorded live using a Mitsubishi digital multitrack system.
I love all the albums, though I have a soft spot for Raindances… which I know a lot of hardcore Cam-Fans might sneer at!
Lex I think you’d love that one because it’s something you can put on and listen to intensively or just in the background.
CAMEL is, probably, Prog's Most Underrated Band
My three favourite bands are Floyd, Yes and Genesis but banging on the door for the last 45 years has been Camel, a band that has a very personal, friendly place in my heart.
Seeing them in back to back Sat-Sun shows in SF in summer of 2000, an unreal soujourn from home in New Orleans to see Rajaz performed live. We had Guy Leblanc on keys then, probably single best overall art-rock presentation I've ever witnessed. My brother saw 6 shows on that tour and wrote a book about it.
I also strongly recommend Camel’s “Snow Goose.” Bravo!
I discovered Camel before Genesis and I loved them at first hearing (I was in my twenties)... so long ago.

How could I possibly not know about this band??? What years did they/do they span? 70’s ? Very talented and listenable. Sounds like Andy Latimer went to town on that guitar if you ask me. Wow.
They started in the early 70s and they’re still going, although only Andrew Latimer (the guitarist) remains. Their early albums such as Mirage and Moonmadness are my favorites, but their entire discography is full of gems. Such a great band!

Wow. I remember seeing Camel at the West Runton Pavilion in Norfolk UK back in 1982. It was more like a large shed with the ceiling about 12 inches above your head. Fantastic Band.
You have now scratched the surface and there is a huge catalog of decades of amazing music My recommendation is you absolutely must get your hands on the album Moon Madness. That's the one that hooked me so many years ago.

The Sax Player (Mel Collins) plays often with King Crimson. Just saw him with them on their most recent tour. He was the first replacement for Ian McDonald (RIP) when he left to form McDonald & Giles and then later formed Foreigner (All of those groups are worthy listens well up your musical alleys!) ;-)

Camel, if you give them a chance, is as good as any of the other prog heavy hitters from back in the day. Their discography is not huge, but it's amazing stuff.
This isn't true. They lack something Genesis or Yes has. That's why they are not on the same level.

I feel so lucky to have been able to see Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Camel, Jethro Tull, ELP, Jean Luc Ponty, Carlos Santana, Frank Zappa, etc before even graduation from high school! I love all music (OK not Banda) but feel that the music I fell in love too in my teens is still the best ever!
Just love Andy Latimer's guitar playing, nothing too flash, just loads of feeling... Similar style to David Gilmore to my ear, where a pause or sustain add so much emotion to the playing..... Try out Lies, Ice, Stationary Traveller, First Light..... Great tracks and amongst my favourites from Camel... Great work as usual guys, keep it up.👍👍👍. Cheers Bob.....
Some of his stuff reminds me of the Allman Brother's "in memory of Elizabeth Reed" They got the idea from a grave stone. You two will freak out. You two need to check this out..

Andy Latimer is a very underrated guitar 🎸 player .I saw them live and they were incredible .i highly recommend you listen to the song.. ICE from" I can almost see your house from here " it's beautiful with great guitar
The original line up of the band was Andy Latimer (Guitar, Flute), Pete Bardens (Keyboards) Doug Ferguson (Bass) and Andy Ward (Drums).
This is a much later line up from the 1984 Pressure Points tour.
Andy Latimer is still there on guitar and flute and Pete Bardens is playing organ (as a guest). Colin Bass is playing bass; he and Andy Latimer are still in the band, which is still touring and its 50th anniversary concerts are next year (I have tickets).
I think the other players are Ton Scherpenzeel (Keyboards), Chris Harley (credited as Chris Rainbow - Keyboards and Vocals), Paul Burgess (Drums) and Mel Collins (Sax). Richie Close is also credited on keyboards, but I can't see him on this track.
Sadly, Richie Close, Pete Bardens and Chris Harley/Rainbow have all since passed away.
Let this brilliant music be their legacy.

Yes, Camel one of my favorite Prog Bands. Their first 4 Albums and the 1981 Nude are masterpieces, but the Snow Goose is my favorite one.

Ever go to a concert and the guitarist only plays about 3/4 of the notes he plays on the studio recording? Andy hits them all, and just as fine!

The Whole lps is beautiful. There was a movie that came out in the early 60s. And it was sad with a beautiful score too.

The guitar at the start of "Never let go" is very good.
Rhayader alone is a beautiful, evocative track. It's not very long, but it conveys a sense of great sadness and loss.
"Music inspired by the snow goose" is a great album. The first side (as per the original vinyl) might be as good a side of music as there is.

Looking at Andrew Latimer (Guitar, flute) on that concert video, you can notice without doubt on his face how much he was living totally his dedication through that band, what an expressive guitar player (Reminds David Gilmour from Pink Floyd and also Steve Hackett from Genesis) Camel is a wise choice to listen to, they released dozens of great albums from early 70's. Their style shifted also a bit from very improvised Progressive music in their beginnings, to more structured suites and songs, from "The Snow goose" and after 4 years, beautiful music like "Moon madness" turned less prog, more pop but with very beautiful crafted songs from 1980 until 1984. (a story that reminds Genesis, but sadly they never could reach that kind of fame, but maybe never compromised their writing so far) Then they stopped for a while crossing the Desert (as Camels do but this wasn't a fun part ) but fortunately re-emerged in the 90' with some brand new albums offering. For my part, I discovered Camel in a transitional Album "I can see your house from here" in 1979, that features a great soaring track much appreciated "Ice", also fun electronic sounds on "Remote Romance" also sick synth solos on "Wait" (guest keyboarder Kit Watkins who played for long time with the American prog band Happy the man, who stayed also for the next record "Nude", very worth it). Funny, they were a lot of interesting dudes contribution in those early 80'. For the Album "Single Factor" 1982 Andy Latimer hired Anthony Phillips (who were the important guitar player in Genesis before he left in 1970 after recording Trespass, all these years he acquired new musical skills, learning to play keyboards like a pro). In 1984 for their album "Stationary traveller" Camel hired Ton Scherpenzeel, a Dutch keyboard composer who founded the prog band Kayak, that just disbanded after 10 years of a rich discography). Well, all these young artists were really talented in those days, happy that some of these made it through.
This is a concept album by camel the Snow Goose. One of my top Camel LP's.The Snow Goose: A Story of Dunkirk is a novella by the American author Paul Gallico.
This was a good live version, but for me I like their live version of this on the TV show Old Whistle Stop, which you can find on TH-cam. Andy Latimer's guitar solo on that video is so more soulful and the woodwinds I enjoy more then the sax on this video. This was still a wonderful performance. Try Lady Fantasy by them next, you won't be disappointed!
This was originally part of a complete works called the Snow Goose. When they originally played it live they did so with full orchestra.
For a guitar treat listen to the live version of ‘Ice’ from 2018 at the Royal Albert Hall london with Andy Latimer absolutely killing it at 68 years old. Absolutely magical!
These two tracks are from the album 'The Snow Goose' (completely instrumental album). Although this performance sounds great, the album is awesome and is best appreciated by listening to it one side at a time in its entirety. 👍
There's connections with this band to King Crimson (Mel Collins) and Caravan (Richard Sinclair) on other 70's albums.
Mel Collins also played with Dire Straits (he's on the live album Alchemy)

I always enjoyed the melodic prog of Camel. One of the few bands I never managed to catch live.
Mel Collins of King Crimson on the sax. He also did sessions for Chris Squire, Roger Waters and David Gilmour.
Loved, loved this. It has such a good ebb and flow to the whole thing. And, it definitely struck me as 70s music when adventure was on the front burner and musical forays went beyond the standard commercial two or three minute expectations.
The next Camel song you should react to is Never Let Go from the 1st album. Other favorites are You Are The One from The Single Factor and Wait from I Can See Your House From Here.
Nice. I think you would also enjoy Rennaissance. Annie Haslam is pure. "Carpet of the Sun" is a classic.

The track "Lunar Sea" from their album Moonmadness is a real trip. I had the pleasure to watch them live back in the day in Spain, and that was one of the songs they played. An experience I will never forget as a whole but that track, oh my Goodness!

Glad to see more Camel. I agree that Moonmadness was probably when they were at their peak creatively. Saw them on that tour. Andy plays guitar as well live as in the studio. Definitely one of the best guitarists yet not well known.

I heard Camel play the whole Snow Goose album in 75 in London. They were an amazing live band and the later line up with Mel Collins and Richard Sinclair was unbelievable. If you listen carefully to A Live Record you can hear me cheering.
Try listening to Ice by the same band. You won't be disappointed.

i believe 1 of the two on keys was Peter Bardens. The wiki line-up for the Hammersmith Odeon performance I believe this was from lists him as a "guest".

Now check out HATFIELD AND THE NORTH and many of the same musicians in NATIONAL HEALTH recommend the live recording of HALFWAY BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH. Dave Stewart keyboard player appeared in many prog bands. CARAVAN are great FOR GIRLS WHO GROW PLUMP IN THE NIGHT is a great album. The whole Canterbury scene - band hailing from Canterbury in U.K. or spiritually in that style like CAMEL are quirky and their musicianship is extraordinary - Nick will love the HATFIELD/NATIONAL HEALTH guitarist PHIL MILLER. Hatfield and the North needs to be the Dave Stewart lineup some of them rebooted in 1990 and it was ghastly

Picked up the debut album shortly after it came out all on the album cover, what a pleasant surprise...
It was as so satisfying to come home from the university bar I was working in, after a night of Nazis Dog or the Nine Inch Nails making my ears bleed to this, a bit of Tull, maybe some James Taylor to sooth my brain....
Camel is always enjoyable. I put them in the Alan Parsons/Floyd/early Genesis musical area. Nothing super crazy, just smooth 70's second tier prog. Andy Latimer has really nice flow to his playing.
The only Camel I have is the album Moon Madness, and every time I hear "Song Within a Song" or "Lunar Sea" #nicknlexrequest I think of you, because I think they're right up your musical alley.
Love the addition of Mel Collins from Crimso in that mid-seventies era. Snow Goose is definitely my next Camel purchase. This was great.

Love Camel. They weren't a flashy 'in your face' type prog band, trying to blow you away with technique, they were more like nice atmospheric melodic instrumentals and some tracks with vox. Always melodic. Always interesting. Nude is a favorte album of mine. Check out the song "Drafted" off the album Nude. Just a beautiful track.

Lex got the pronunciation right - it's "Rye-a-dur" with a short "a". Rhayader is a small town in mid-Wales, but I don't know if Camel got the name used in this album from there. Camel are a great band, although I find some of their early keyboard sounds grating at times.

The lp version is more serene. Which I prefer. Though I still love this also. I met the original keyboardist PETER BARDENS at UCLA's Royce Hall during the L.A. Progfest 93. And interviewed on my camcorder.

A so extreme underrated progrock band Camel. Always a favorite, so much great, but not really familiar songs !!!
this is based on the book 'the snowgoose' by paul gallico. one of the best records ever made.this is not the original line up. if you want to see the original members of the band see the bbc live version. the original band had peter bardens on keyboards, one of the greats of the analog synth era. he later became van morrison's keyboard player.
A band with a similar line-up is the band of Barbara Dennerlein in this live video, but with the difference that Barbara does the job of two musicians at the same time. She is one of the very best musicians on this planet, whether she plays solo or with a band. And a band with Barbara always sounds as if there is one more musician in it than there really are. Guitar, sax and drums are excellent in this video, but the star is Barbara who does the job of keyboarder and bass player at the same time.

This is from a 1984 video/live album. The first organ solo is from Peter Bardens, the band's original keyboard player who left in 1978. That sax solo is from Mel Collins (King Crimson, Dire Straits, etc), who was a member of Camel for a couple albums and tours (both Bardens and Collins are also in the 1977 Sight and Sound live video you can find on TH-cam.) But Camel is considered among the top "second tier" prog bands. They were never trail blazers, and felt the pressure to commercialize more strongly than some in the late 70s/early 80s, but they're a pretty much universally loved band among prog fans. There's a ton of history to explore, and in some regards they're still a going concern, despite deaths and health issues of its remaining members.
This particular performance is not from the 70s,but the music is! Andrew Latimer is as every bit as good as David gilmour!

Not too familiar with this band, but this was a great song. Kind of reminds me of Supertramp.
Probably the sax part with the jazz rock feel reminds Supertramp, but Camel is usually featuring much more lead guitar (Closer to Pink Floyd) and some very lengthy Instrumental sections that make them on their own originality, in fact you can also notice some very classical background.
Apart from the 80s keyboard sounds (yuck), this is great footage.

May I suggest that you listen to Beth Hart. She’s an American blues singer from LA, and her original compositions are simply amazing, and she often works with an incredible blues guitarist named Joe Bonomasa. Not particularly saying this about this channel but how come all these reactions channels never have a bad word to say about the videos they watch. I mean i love Camel but i dont like every song of theirs. I know Rhayader is loved by most Camel fans and would be in their top ten but not for me. There are many more songs i would put before it.
