    I love that Sansa's "dragonfly" brooches could really be the trees' leaves. Those trees are very important to her family and the fact she seems to hold onto them shows she's honoring her family and remembers where she came from, even when she feels lost.

    I love how much information you find out about the costumes! The costumes and sets in GoT is definitely one of my favourite things about the show because it brings the books to life in a less restricted way than the story line.
    I loved the costumes in the Tudors and was hoping you would talk about how realistic they were for the time period. Same with Medici masters of Florence if you think there would be enough people interested in that. :)

    I like how the costume designers for GOT have made the wardrobe for Dany to be a mixture of Western and South Asian fashion, which makes sense as she is a Westerosi woman who was raised in Essos, so her clothing reflects her multicultural upbringing.

    I'm from India and we normally wear kurtis so it's quite funny to hear that Dany's gowns have been influenced from this style. It looks so different in our Indian period dramas,maybe it's because they mostly wear it with regal, voluminous skirts underneath while Dany goes for a more combat ready look with trousers underneath.

    • @Costume_CO
      @Costume_CO  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, I agree! I think that Michele Clapton (the designer) likes to mash-up a variety of influences from many cultures. There is a lot of Indian culture in many of hr costumes. Even the fabrics are often times beautiful saree silks and brocades.

    Another thing about the lion necklaces that I think you missed is that Tyrion also gifts one to Ros in the first season (which later leads to Cersei thinking she is his mistress instrad of Shae) and Myrcella is also wearing one, so my guess is that it is a "Lannister thing," a trinket a Lannister gifts to show their favor to someone. And because both, Cersei and Myrcella, are wearing it, I'm assuming it's something every female Lannister wears.
    I just love your videos! I have researched the costumes a lot and even wrote my bachelor thesis on the subject, so there are a lot of things I'm familiar with but still I'm learning at least one new thing in every video. You're doing an amazing job.

    Thanks for the awesome info, as usual!
    I loved the info about the Lannister Lion pendants, but wanted to mention something else interesting about them...
    In S05E02 Cersei gets a box with a snake statue inside it, holding a Lion pendant in its mouth. She brings Jamie in and shows it to him, and tells him that "There are only two of these pendants in the world". She then tells him that she's wearing one and Myrcella is wearing the other, so this necklace must be Myrcella's.
    This causes Jamie to rush to Dorne to rescue her, as they take this as a threat that she's in the clutches of the Sand Snakes. The interesting thing is, as you mentioned, there is at least one other of these pendants - Sansa's.
    Now, the real question is - Is the pendant in the snake's jaws really Myrcella's? (She does say that she lost hers, so we assume it is).
    Why did Cersei say that there were only two? She must have known about Sansa's necklace. I can't imagine Joffrey just had it made out of the goodness of his heart... *choke*...
    Did Cersei mean there were only two of that larger size?
    Did she want to get Jamie out of Kings' Landing for a time?
    Did she just want Myrcella back?
    What, EXACTLY, was going on?
    The death of Myrcella deletes Dorne's idea of seizing the throne via Myrcella. Don't forget, Dorne has a different inheritance law than the rest of Westeros. In Dorne, the eldest child inherits - irrespective of sex - so by Dornish law Myrcella would be the next in line for the throne, not Tommen. Did Cersei know this? Is that why she wanted to break Myrcella and Trystane up, or did she just not want more Dornish influence in KL?
    OMG I love this series! It's so good it's insane!
    I think GOT is going to take over as 'the best TV series ever produced' and 'West Wing' is goign to lose the throne! :D

    • @Costume_CO
      @Costume_CO  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally forgot about that plot point! I'm just finishing the Dornish segment of my next video and Myrcella is most definitely wearing the Lannister pendant. Steensons Jewellery made two pendants - 1 large and 1 small one. Cersei also wears a pendant in a flashback scene, so it's possible that the creators were moving them around, but like you said, there should be at least 3.
      Just a thought...maybe Cersei planted the snake with the necklace in order to get Myrcella back. She was getting more and more paranoid (rightfully so) and probably sensed the growing danger for Mrycella (although the Dornish / Sand Snakes never intended to harm her initially). I wonder if Jame had never gone to Dorne if Myrcella might have remained safe.

    Loved watching your breakdown of the costumes of Game of Thrones! It's very interesting and the analyses is great!
    One tiny correction though. What you're referring to as a "Kurta" or "Kurti"is actually a Peshwaz, which though similar to the Kurta was actually worn above skirts by women of the Mughal Empire in India. It was Persian attire introduced to India with the Mughal invasion in 1526 and has since become a part of our ethnic costume repertoire. It was a kind of jacket or "jama" to be worn above a bodice and with time it evolved into a tunic worn above a skirt. Often, the women would wear several such garments one on top of the other, to give a layered look. This was achieved by the garments being made from the finest silk or muslin available to the Mughals then, giving a wonderful see through yet layered look. The slits can be in front or at the sides as well, depending on the style prevalent during a given period. Front slits were all the rage in the period between 1600-1900. Nowadays, side slits or curved openings in the front are a more modern rendition of the Peshwaz, intended to show off the elaborate skirt worn beneath. Here are some links for the same
    www.utsavpedia.com/attires/clothing-styles-drapes/peshwaz/ - This one is a description and history for the Peshwaz.
    th-cam.com/video/h6lHUn20J5g/w-d-xo.html - This is a song sequence from a recent period film in India called "Bajirao Mastani". In the song, the main central dancer, Mastani is wearing a perfect recreated example of what an original Peshwaz would have looked like.
    Keep Making these amazing videos! love to watch them :D :D

    • @Costume_CO
      @Costume_CO  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Nirvaan! I did come across that garment when researching the Dorne costumes. I don't think that is the correct silhouette for Dany's costumes because there is too much flare in the skirt and not enough fit in the bodice. So while the garment I have referenced may not be correctly called a Kurti (a) the silhouette I have provided in the Indo-Western gaments is.

    • @nirvaanghosh9075
      @nirvaanghosh9075 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are absolutely right. Michelle Clapton probably liked how the Peshwaz interacted with skirt and the body in general and used it as an inspiration, considering traditional Peshwaz's are supposed to be full sleeved. And Indo-Western is the right term for the sleeveless type dresses as traditionally, women's clothing would hardly ever reveal any skin.
      And yes, the flair in the skirt is something that would look very heavily borrowed from eastern traditions. I just love how much the makers of the costumes borrowed their ideas from countries like China, India & Japan. Thank you for your hard work and research on these videos.. May i request you to do a series on other period films & series? Such as "The Tudors", "The White Queen", "Anonymous" etc? Thanks a lot !

    • @Costume_CO
      @Costume_CO  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, got it. The skirt is sunburst or sunray pleated which is a sharp knife pleat that is more narrow at the waist than the hem. The pleating in the statue is called antique pleating (at least, that what I learned in school) - it's a very fine even pleating used in ancient Greek and Roman clothing. I talk about it in my Crimson Peak video - I'll try and get you the link for that. You will see this type of pleating used in fashion by Madame Gres and Fortuny.

    • @edi9892
      @edi9892 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can't remember for sure, but I think in the book it was left unclear and we had a few red herings. It could be very well that Littlefinger made Sansa believe that she was part of the plot without her knowledge in order to make her follow him (in any case, the others saw her guilty anyway).
      If I further remember correctly, both Preston Jakobs and The Order of the Green Hand came up with their own theory on what really happened and both theories were very different.
