It's just difficult for me to warp my head around the fact that he hosted this program for over 15 years. I can't think of anything I've done for over 15 years.
I've still never quit/lost my very first job....11 years later I'm still at my company right out of high school. Never been employed another place in my life. It feels like I blinked and a decade passed! It's actually a bit of a scary feeling, as a non-robot, the thought that someday I might be 40 years old and having to look for my first new job ever.
I'm glad that he's doing great with his TBS show now, but every time I come across something related to the infamous late night incident, my heart still breaks for Conan. :( Also, I miss his beard. Thank you for this! Looking forward to more of your clips.

Conan has been on television in 1993,1994,1995,1996,1997,1998,1999,2000,2001,2002,2003,2004,2005,2006,2007,2008,2009,2010,2011,2012,2013,2014,2015,2016! 24 years I think.
Conan had a great team since '93 at Late Night (as evidenced by the team photo at the beginning) and you can tell he really appreciated that. He took them all to the Tonight show and when he got let go by NBC in '10 he took care of them (probably negotiated into his severance package, although I wouldn't put it past him to do it out-of-pocket) and then brought them all to TBS when legally allowed to start working again. Team Coco deserves a shout-out. Not just all the ones that made it on camera over the years, but the many behind the scenes folks. Conan has always sung their praises every step of the way. Very good and decent people.
The last part of his speech is pretty devastating in retrospect, knowing that his defiant attitude and his genuine personality wouldn't allow to take on a fake persona in order to fit into the Tonight Show, ultimately triggering the NBC debacle, and especially because of that Conan should be respected as not only an incredibly gifted Late Night Host , but also as the humble and honest human being that he is

At 5.15 hearing Coan thank Jeff Zucker, who in the space of one year from when this was broadcast would be giving Conan no choice but to leave the Tonight Show and showed no regard at all for Conan's position. Jeff Zucker created the Tonight Show fiasco in 2010, amazing how things can change in the space of one year. "He's stuck with me and showed an eerie faith in me", well that was not the case in January 2010.
Watching him day and day out for the past year, as a person who was distant to stand up and host shows, seeing him almost break in tears at the end, was a sight to be seen. He is strong, really, funny and a genius at what he does.
10 years later he's still the best Late Night host, and happier than ever- as he said in many recent interviews. Went to Conan taping yesterday. His crew members are fantastic, and he is full of energy and incredibly funny.
Respect to you Conan! What a beautiful and memorable speech. I love that he moved on from the "Late Night Incident", and does a great ob at TBS....but damn I still feel sorry for him :/ And the fact that you can hear, that all the way through this speech, he is holding his tears back.....so sad :(

To be fair, though, it's not like Conan put Jay's needs ahead of his own when he first accepted NBC's offer to drop Jay in exchange for "The Tonight Show" (rather than going to another network). It's mostly on NBC for later thinking they could keep still keep Jay and Conan. Doing that just hurt both their careers.

I do agree with Dave when it comes to NBC (Jeff Zucker's penchant for horse-switching was just insane), but I disapproved of the way he went after Jay because (1) Conan Was partially responsible as the ratings slide began months before Jay's 10pm show came along, and (2) part of the reason people didn't watch Conan was because they were tuning in to see Letterman explain (and apologize to his wife for) his sex scandal. I was amazed by the restraint Jay showed not going after Dave the way he would have with any other cheating celebrity. So Dave assailing him when it was Jay's turn to be in the public spotlight (I felt) bordered on hypocrisy.
I love when he said "I've read in some articles that it's time for me to grow up. I assure that's not going to happen." Grow up?? He's in entertainment. If I want grown up and boring I would of watched Leno.
Late Night will always be Conan's pride and joy. Letterman may have had it before and grew it to its popularity but Conan made it an establishment and that can't be taken away from him. As much as I loved Conan hosting the Tonight Show and his own TBS show they both don't come close to anything he's done on Late Night.

He's changing the show to match the current generation, I think that's great, talk show hosts have been doing that for years. I'm tired of people smearing him and his show, I think he's doing a fine job.

"In the year 2000" , Max skits, Joel skits, Andy skits, Preparation H Raymond, Artie Kendall the Ghost Crooner, Mr. T Apple Picking, etc., etc. ,etc. I grew up watching Conan. I used to go to sleep early in 5th grade back in 93-94, set my alarm for 12:30 to watch it, and then go back to sleep. When Brian Stack recently left, it was an end of an era.

I still list one of the best moments of my life as watching the 1860s American Baseball bit live.....I can't remember my entire family ever laughing harder together in our lives. The 12:35 NYC show was the same type of must-see ritual for me. When our family would vacation in hotels in the 90s I would often sneak out of bed as a kid back to the living room to watch Conan 12-inches from the screen with the volume way down so my family wouldn't catch me. I don't think I saw my first episode of Conan until 1996 or 1997, but I was hooked right away. Remember when NYC had a blackout and Conan still did his show with no audience? The BEST era was when Comedy Central started reairing episodes the next evening in the mid 2000s, I never missed an episode during that time. Sighhh, that feels like yesterday. I can still remember the CC promos hyping Late Night reruns coming to the network...Conan with the guitar playing for the elderly woman in bed and singing in that sweet high voice of his..."Old lady, go to sle-e-eeeeep"
I'll also never forget watching the episode live when Sue Johanson, the elderly tv sex therapist (totally thought she had passed away btw but she hasn't) was on the show to show off sex toys, and the wrestler Big Show Paul Wight was sitting next to her. When she strapped that dildo to her chin and started gobbling like a turkey...OH MY GOD! I can't even remember how old I was at that time, like 15 years old I think, but I remember being in physical pain for that entire interview because I was laughing so hard, absolutely NOBODY could keep it together that night
Ten years passed. Leno is gone, Jimmy is a dud, and Conan is doing better than ever. The GOAT of late night and respected and loved by everyone who works/ed with him, AND his piers!

I'm halfway through this. And just realized, by total happenstance, I'm watching this 11 years later, to the day. But I remember watching it live and being entranced the whole time...and definitely tearing up at times. I first watched this iteration of Conan in probably 1996. I was 13 years old. Then watched it right up to the end when I was 26. Not every show of course...but _so many._ It's pretty damn nostalgic to watch this now. It's also pretty awkward when he praises leno. When he said, "It's fine to be funny, but if you have no character none of it is worth a damn." Shit....so true.
I think Conan probably had more respect for the tradition of The Tonight Show and it being shot in LA, so he probably fought less. I think NBC, especially in 2014, was still trying to not fuck up again and just said whatever put it in NY
@@CNep99 well, you also have to remember that from 1954 - 1972, the Tonight Show was a live 90-minute program from New York City. Johnny Carson was the one who pushed to have the show moved to Burbank and to not have it done live. Instead of having late-night interviews from 11:30 pm onwards, they taped the show at 5:30 in the afternoon and ran the show as if it was live at 11:30. I think the move back to NYC was done for a couple of reasons, there has been a renaissance of sorts in the NY area in the last 20 years. Anybody who's done any sort of research could tell you that NYC in the 1970's was not a safe place to be. Crime was a big issue in those days. Another reason on the switch was that Burbank was the home of the Tonight Show for 42 years and NBC's HQ is located at 30 Rock in NYC. I think NBC wanted that control of the show back under their own roof, so to speak. The leverage has swung back under the suits at NBC in relation to the Tonight Show. Johnny Carson had all of the leverage during his run and NBC wouldn't have dreamt of moving the show back to NYC as they knew that Carson would have walked out and gone to another network. Leno's ratings success also garnered Leno some leverage over the network as well in keeping the show based in Burbank. Seeing the bloodbath that the Execs committed after Conan O'Brien moved his entire staff out to Los Angeles for what ultimately became only seven months of work. I don't think the Network wanted a repeat performance in case Fallon had faltered. The Network paid Conan an extra $13 million dollars in the final settlement to compensate Conan's staff for their time and effort in moving cross-country and helping some move back to New York that weren't going to be a part of Conan's next venture (Conan's TBS show). NBC has always had the motto of "keep everybody if we can", this is why they dangled the carrot of being the next Tonight Show host to Letterman to try and keep him on-board after 1992. They dangled that same carrot to Conan from 2004 onwards after Conan had turned down some massive offers from other networks (ABC and Fox) to host an 11:30 show. I think NBC has finally learned their lesson on the stupidity of that motto.

Seth Meyers was a great choice, another SNL writer (and one that actually kept SNL afloat with actual funny sketches during that late 2000's-early 2010's era), and got off that SNL boat before Trump's election; also smart enough to not take that carrot.

Late Night will always be Conan's pride and joy. Letterman may have had it before and grew it to its popularity but Conan made it an establishment and that can't be taken away from him. As much as I loved Conan hosting the Tonight Show and his own TBS show they both don't come close to anything he's done on Late Night.

Agreed. Late night was raunchier and took more risks. They tamed it back for tonight show and it just didn’t work. Conan isn’t a Leno and can’t do a “safe” type of show

He's changing the show to match the current generation, I think that's great, talk show hosts have been doing that for years. I'm tired of people smearing him and his show, I think he's doing a fine job.

Conan is the BEST. The BEST! He’s sorely missed.
I love Conan even now, but nothing will come close to his 12:35 slot in NYC....not even the 11:35 gig he had in LA for a few months. "In the year 2000" , Max skits, Joel skits, Andy skits, Preparation H Raymond, Artie Kendall the Ghost Crooner, Mr. T Apple Picking, etc., etc. ,etc. I grew up watching Conan. I used to go to sleep early in 5th grade back in 93-94, set my alarm for 12:30 to watch it, and then go back to sleep. When Brian Stack recently left, it was an end of an era.

And he was getting some serious interest from Fox to host a 11:35 gig. Conan wanted the Tonight Show and NBC had to act, but unfortunately thanks to Leno the succession did'nt go smoothly.
I still list one of the best moments of my life as watching the 1860s American Baseball bit live.....I can't remember my entire family ever laughing harder together in our lives. The 12:35 NYC show was the same type of must-see ritual for me. When our family would vacation in hotels in the 90s I would often sneak out of bed as a kid back to the living room to watch Conan 12-inches from the screen with the volume way down so my family wouldn't catch me. I don't think I saw my first episode of Conan until 1996 or 1997, but I was hooked right away. Remember when NYC had a blackout and Conan still did his show with no audience? The BEST era was when Comedy Central started reairing episodes the next evening in the mid 2000s, I never missed an episode during that time. Sighhh, that feels like yesterday. I can still remember the CC promos hyping Late Night reruns coming to the network...Conan with the guitar playing for the elderly woman in bed and singing in that sweet high voice of his..."Old lady, go to sle-e-eeeeep"
I'll also never forget watching the episode live when Sue Johanson, the elderly tv sex therapist (totally thought she had passed away btw but she hasn't) was on the show to show off sex toys, and the wrestler Big Show Paul Wight was sitting next to her. When she strapped that dildo to her chin and started gobbling like a turkey...OH MY GOD! I can't even remember how old I was at that time, like 15 years old I think, but I remember being in physical pain for that entire interview because I was laughing so hard, absolutely NOBODY could keep it together that night

Conan broke down here a bit harder than on his last Tonight Show. He may have done occasional Shows here in NY since, but they were never the same compared to his stay there...
I'm halfway through this. And just realized, by total happenstance, I'm watching this 11 years later, to the day.
But I remember watching it live and being entranced the whole time...and definitely tearing up at times. I first watched this iteration of Conan in probably 1996. I was 13 years old. Then watched it right up to the end when I was 26. Not every show of course...but _so many._ It's pretty damn nostalgic to watch this now.
It's also pretty awkward when he praises leno. When he said, "It's fine to be funny, but if you have no character none of it is worth a damn." Shit....so true.
I cried, when he cried.
Conan should've never left Late Night or NY. Show was never the same moving it to Los Angeles.
He did Late night for long enough.
It's a smaller show for a smaller audience and smaller money.
He was established enough to move on by this point.
Except his show single handledly changed the landscape of late night, to the point where him leaving it killed it.

I think Conan probably had more respect for the tradition of The Tonight Show and it being shot in LA, so he probably fought less.
I think NBC, especially in 2014, was still trying to not fuck up again and just said whatever put it in NY
@@CNep99 well, you also have to remember that from 1954 - 1972, the Tonight Show was a live 90-minute program from New York City. Johnny Carson was the one who pushed to have the show moved to Burbank and to not have it done live. Instead of having late-night interviews from 11:30 pm onwards, they taped the show at 5:30 in the afternoon and ran the show as if it was live at 11:30.
I think the move back to NYC was done for a couple of reasons, there has been a renaissance of sorts in the NY area in the last 20 years. Anybody who's done any sort of research could tell you that NYC in the 1970's was not a safe place to be. Crime was a big issue in those days. Another reason on the switch was that Burbank was the home of the Tonight Show for 42 years and NBC's HQ is located at 30 Rock in NYC. I think NBC wanted that control of the show back under their own roof, so to speak. The leverage has swung back under the suits at NBC in relation to the Tonight Show. Johnny Carson had all of the leverage during his run and NBC wouldn't have dreamt of moving the show back to NYC as they knew that Carson would have walked out and gone to another network. Leno's ratings success also garnered Leno some leverage over the network as well in keeping the show based in Burbank.
Seeing the bloodbath that the Execs committed after Conan O'Brien moved his entire staff out to Los Angeles for what ultimately became only seven months of work. I don't think the Network wanted a repeat performance in case Fallon had faltered. The Network paid Conan an extra $13 million dollars in the final settlement to compensate Conan's staff for their time and effort in moving cross-country and helping some move back to New York that weren't going to be a part of Conan's next venture (Conan's TBS show).
NBC has always had the motto of "keep everybody if we can", this is why they dangled the carrot of being the next Tonight Show host to Letterman to try and keep him on-board after 1992. They dangled that same carrot to Conan from 2004 onwards after Conan had turned down some massive offers from other networks (ABC and Fox) to host an 11:30 show. I think NBC has finally learned their lesson on the stupidity of that motto.

Seth Meyers was a great choice, another SNL writer (and one that actually kept SNL afloat with actual funny sketches during that late 2000's-early 2010's era), and got off that SNL boat before Trump's election; also smart enough to not take that carrot.
