Seeing the roofs come off of those houses so easily is upsetting when it's totally avoidable. American needs to start building houses out of stone and brick again like Europe does. Then the house is in the midwest would survive these events. This will just keep happening with that cheap cardboard plywood nonsense that they insist on using to save money/time. Been living in Kansas for over 15 years and this was the first tornado I ever saw touch ground. I could see it all the way from Wichita. What's crazier is I had a friend who was going to go to the YMCA to get a pump but last minute decided not to, and the Andover Y ended up getting demolished by the Tornado

I was there, and the scariest thing about this tornado, the sirens didn’t go off until over five minutes after it started destroying things. It’s insane that no one ended up seriously hurt.

Fun fact about tornadoes, they really rely on flat surfaces to thrive, the moment the start to meet resistance, they can start to slow, note that the more powerful the tornado, the more it can travel through unfavorable terrain, and the less smooth the terrain has to be to support it.
I am not an expert, and thus can't tell you the exact way this works, or the equation to figure out a tornadoes resilience.
Also, I am not an expert, and thus not necessarily a reliable source.

Little note, if you ever see a tornado, and it’s not moving, you best get out the way because it’s either going away from you or coming directly at you, and it may look like it’s not moving, but by the time you figure that out, it’s too late. Be safe

As someone who grew up in Oklahoma, he handled the situation perfectly. You can't run from mother nature, all you can do is watch in amazement. People who scream and freak the hell out are not handling the situation well.

Having one go through our neighborhood about that same distance away, what doesn't get fully captured is the full sound of these monsters. Usually they come through at night, so you can't see them, you're huddled in the smallest interior room, and I swear it sounds like a water fall at first, but then it keeps getting louder and louder, the ground vibrates, air is getting sucked out, small hard stuff starts hitting your home at tremendous velocities sounding like gunshots, then the power goes out and it's all you hear. That's the moment of terror You know you have a 66% chance of it going to the north or south of you, but it's very dynamic. If can go from sounding weak to incredibly strong in a few seconds. It's not fun, it's just pure terror.

I swear, like as an Alabamian resident (don't say it don't say it don't say it), I can confirm. I'd say that around 70% of our thunderstorms that birth those land whirlpools start in the evening and come from the west in the spring and early summer and for the west around fall and late summer. Lost a couple of sheds and power for like 2, 3 days back in January because one went right beside the house and crossed the hwy beside us. Oddly. Nobody got hurt. This tornado had 0 warning. My father in law was down the street from it. 30 seconds, millions in damage, no injuries.

i remember as a kid seeing andover all over the news from getting creamed by an f5 tornado. late 80's or early 90's. parents drove us through to see the wreckage couple days later. pretty scary stuff
