How encouraging it is to watch the young and the 'young at heart' engage in a common interest Jonathon is eager for all the 'right things' and will find his peace. What talent to behold from both of you. I thank you most kindly for this vid and the steady /talented hand of Catherine. My how that bird-a-roasting on an open fire, made my mouth water. Methinks U keep it fresh in your mind and it gives the impetus for a successful shoot. Very nice! I have a couple of masonry tips for your next project! When laying stone or brick, the sides of the stone or brick that are going to be butted against each other need to be "buttered". This means the stone that has been set needs mortar on its side and the stone that is being placed, if possible, needs mortar on the side. When placed there should be mortar squeezing out of the joints. Also, the bed of mortar should be uneven, when i set mortar I run the tip of the trowel through the middle of the mortar to make a kind of trough, it helps the mortar grip the stone. Finally, laying more mortar than needed is what is needed! Mortar should be oozing from the joints! Loved this project, im gonna subscribe!

    • @TheWoodlandEscape
      @TheWoodlandEscape  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I certainly could have used you on this project. I try to butter the ends but using pre mixed mortar have trouble with it sticking. On our cabin chimney we mixed our own with sand and buttering the rock worked very well. We appreciate your interest.

    Howdy Peter
The food cooking smelled great ... LOL .. was those the beets sautéing you were telling me about on the last video?
Your friend had some fine-looking tools..... those shape planners .... Is a piece of art remind me when on the Woodwright's shop I mentioned before, he has some very old planes .... maybe when you get a chance blacksmith shop up and running you could shape some Old Spring Steel for his cutters,
When you're done with your furnace you be able to put together any jigsaw puzzle Milton Bradley's ever made . get 10 rocks used 3 ... It will be all worth it at the end

All worth it in the end … here’s hoping. Looks pretty but, will it draw. I remain optimistic!

Well done. You captured the 'need' of the 18th century compared to the develpoment to rhe more detailed & sophisticated 19th century as people became a settled society, requiring more creature comfits as progess occurred.
Magnificent tools developed & toolkit tool constructed to achieve that accurate & ornate finish demanded as the society grew.

Very true and if we fast forward to our modern world, one might consider our material needs or should I say wants a wee bit decadent!

Yes. I guess they call it progress - but it gets to a stage of being superfluous then pure greed. Just look at us humans now!! Unreal.

Cudo's to Mr. J. Gregory for tackling thefine trades of Carpentry and log structures. I see Peter is adding his masonry skills to John's skills! I also see that John is a quick learner as attested by the video.
I must ask, how difficult was it to remove the form from the arch once you finished it?
Another great video Peter and Cathy!!
Best Regards and keep em coming!!

As informative as ever! I am guessing that by "leaning" the rocks forward some it also made it easier to remove the form? I would think a couple of smacks on the front would push it back enough it could be lifted out?

I actually made it collapsible, so it came out quite easily.

Selecting likely rocks is one thing: perhaps numbering them after a dry fit could be another?😊

If I may, wet your rocks before mortaring in,, sticks better, less cracking down the road. Nicely down

Peter, either his box top is not level or your logs are out of level. Don't know which! Or, the box is not sitting level on the floor. I expect it's the latter as I have faith in your building!

So we have 3 possibilities here, Millie. Not sure on which of two but, one things for sure Jons box is dead level, lol.

The only way you learn how to do something is to do it. Schools just give you the knowledge but not the experience, which you only learn by making mistakes.
