  • Peter begins laying the second layer of pine planks on the floor to stop drafts. He uses a hand plane to take down the high spots on the sub floor. He continues to lay stones, as he builds the chimney for his rumford fireplace.
    He then gives a tour of his 21'st century home, contrasting some of the conveniences with the lifestyle of the pioneers in the 1700's. He discusses the importance of planting trees, before looking at the first log cabin he built on the property, the original historic retreat. That cabin has been modified, adding conveniences such as outdoor shower and wood stove.
    As he discusses the history of the indigenous peoples on the continent, he works on a sewing new haversack from brain tanned deer hide.

    I like all three of your houses, and agree 100% about showers, to the point of even punching holes in the bottom of a wooden bucket. It was brisk but it and a cup of campfire coffee is the only way to start a day! 'Course there was no canvas curtain, But if ya didn't want to see man in all his glory you should avert your gaze. Now 70 years later I figure most would give me a curtain just so there is no chance... LOL Love your site, and from your neighbors to the south, happy Independence day. Love how you matched up Canada day to it , it wasn't missed by me. Thanks as really appreciate

      @@TheWoodlandEscape A little cabin, thunderstorm outside, wood stove, rocking chair, books. All that is missing is a coffee pot on either the wood stove or the cook top.
      As far as the outhouse being the SECOND most important building, I'm not really certain. In an emergency, one can take shelter in an outhouse...but there are some things that one just doesn't do in the cabin.

It is a wonderful place to visit even though you can't get out of your vehicle for obvious reasons! Visited your country twice and feel in love with it all! Even visited areas that I should have not! @@milliebanks7209, yes we have the same surname. But two brother came into South Africa around 1736 from Germany.
      I am the direct lineage from the one brother. The 8th generation. President Paul Kruger came from the lineage of the other brother. Therefore I am related but not directly. But we both come from pioneer families that are called Voortrekkers- which is a Dutch and Afrikaans word for pioneer or those who trekked in front.

    Thank you for those last kind words. Ive had the privilege of working with most of the different native tribes of eastern Canada for the last 20 years. Their history goes back thousands of years...the stories of their travels and migrations when they were nomadic are mind boggling, fascinating and such attestment to the undauntable human spirit to not only survive but flourish. They never seemed to develop that desire to own and dominate nature..they had flourished in mother nature's warm embrace for so long...like the animals in that poem you quoted...there was a time when humans were in harmony like the bear , the whale, the chikadee or the ant...now it is still possible to be in that harmony, in that state of mind and spirit...all that is needed is an open heart..Meegweetch

    Absolutely loved the tour of your homestead. You've built a really beautiful collection to be proud of. We share the same love and admiration of not only history, but also of native culture and native people. They've given us so much in exchange for the short end of the stick... I lament that we can't go back in time and give them the respect and dignity they deserve. So I live with that respect for them here and now and try to teach it to my own children and the people I cross paths with in living history. It's worth the effort to me.

    It's obvious you have never ever laid a floor.
    NEVER PUT THE TOP LAYER OF BOARDS IN THE SAME DIRECTION AS THE BOTTOM LAYER! IT CAUSES WEAK SPOTS AND UNEAVEN FLOORS.
    that is why you always put flooring 90%angle from bottom layer.
    ( can you put flooring on top of joists the same direction, NO because they would FALL BETWEEN THE JOIST! BOARDS ALWAYS GO ACROST THE SUPPORT UNDERNEATH!)

    • @TheWoodlandEscape
      @TheWoodlandEscape  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate the feedback Cynthia but, I have built a number of houses and barns and you are spot on with your council. However, in the earlier days when one was forced to build with green wood they had to consider shrinkage. So the first layer lays 90 degrees to the joist as you suggested. T he reason the second layer goes the same direction is to stop drafts when the wood shrinks. The boards are all 12” wide but, the second one later spans the bottom layer by 6” thus stopping any drafts. Had I laid I’d the opposite direction I would end up with a draft ever 12 “. I studied two homes in our area, on built in 1830 the other in 1860, both are constructed as I have done on this build.

    Thank you Peter, for acknowledging some of the problems that have long plagued your country, and for taking the time to sit with it and the emotions it brings up. It's an ugly truth, but I truly believe that the only way to do better is by owning up to the mistakes of the past and learning from them. Because it's so easy to ignore the things that we don't want to see, as long as they're not affecting us directly. And that kind of complacency is something we all have to struggle against in order to build a better world for coming generations. Or for there to be a world for future generations at all.
    There's a greek proverb I've seen passed around a bit lately, which I thought fairly apropos of this video in several ways: "Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in." Because it's worth the discomfort to keep fighting for human dignity and compassion. 🙂

      We put in an aquatic safe dye that works like wearing sunglasses. Supposedly it reflects ultra violet back and discourages algae. It was a mistake given the artificial colour . On a positive note, it has returned back to its natural colour.

    Just curious, why wouldn't you lay the second layer perpendicular to the first? Would be more effective at stopping the drafts. If someone else asked this, my apologies! I've just discovered you. :)
    The fireplace is really gorgeous.

    • @TheWoodlandEscape
      @TheWoodlandEscape  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A simple answer, as the boards shrink (laid perpendicular) we would have drafts every 12”. The second layer that covers the subfloor cover each crack with 6” of wood. So all boards are 12” wide and on these first layer. We start the second layer with a 6” board and then 12” boards until we get to the opposite wall, ending with another 6” board. Not sure I’ve explained that very well but, I can assure you, there are no drafts in the floor. We’re glad you both found are channel and are enjoying it. We also really appreciate getting feedback from people.

    Another great video. Great deep thoughts there. I have Canadian friends (both settlers & First Nations) and just like you, they (and many others outside Canada, myself included) are deeply disturbed by the recent findings of the horrible past evidence of something many of us suspected (the widespread abuse of First Nations people). But reality was well beyond & much, much worse than many remotely suspected. Generalized genocide of native children in residential schools, churches & orphanages & others, is an absolutely disheartening part of Canadian (and maybe other Northamerican countries) history. Canada, USA & Mexico have a deep debt of respect & reconciliation to be paid to our unbelievable, culturally rich, noble and amazing First Nations people. Thanks for sharing.

    Fellow Canadian here. I found your channel earlier this week and watch one video a day. This 'rental' cabin is the perfect size for me. Almost. I'd add six feet to the far end so I could add a pantry to the left, a washroom (with a composting toilet) to the right and a door in the centre (so I'd have two exits). What size is your cabin? Thanks.

If we were to live in it, I agree, I would put a small addition to allow a small sleeping quarter and allowing for slightly bigger living area. It is very popular as a short term rental just as it is. We also have an outdoor shower feed from our pond.

      That is in fact the point of what he's saying, though? The point of reflecting on history is to learn from it and prevent atrocities like that from happening again. Too many people ignore the wrongs of the world because they don't want to see them. That's what happened with children at residential schools in Canada. White people were all too happy to ignore the natives telling them their children were being taken and never returned, because it didn't directly affect them.
      Just like white people in the US right now are ignoring what's been happening in the ICE camps with refugee children in cages. Some of them are disappearing without a trace into the foster system, actively being robbed of their cultural heritage. Some of them are dying. If you believe the ICE detention centers don't have any children's graves out back, you're delusional.
      The *point* is that when you learn about something truly awful like this, you need to stop and examine yourself, you need to listen to the people around you, especially those who are telling you it is hard for them to make their voices heard, you have to sit with the hard, uncomfortable truths and you have to vow to yourself not to let these things happen all over again, and you need to examine the leaders (for example, priests and politicians) who told you these things were good, in order to determine if they were actively misleading you or themselves being misled.
      At least, that's the mature, adult thing to do... but some people don't want to think that much, because they'd rather be considered a villain a century from now than spend even five minutes contemplating their own morality in the moment.
