Making an ILTMS Branding Iron for Bob Clagett -

  • I mysteriously ended up at Bob's house, so I decided to make him an ILikeToMakeStuff branding iron. This project uses basic concepts, with an intermediate twist (adaptive clearing), but you could still get to the same end product using less advanced techniques in 2D CAM programs.
    An older branding iron with engraved text: • DIY Electric Branding ...
    This goes without saying, but if you're not already subbed to Bob, then clearly you don't like to make stuff and we can't be friends.

    5:50 - A couple of drops of isopropyl alcohol can really quiet things down and cool the bit. Just be sure you have adequate ventilation. I use kool mist formula 77 mixed at 1:40 with water... however it will leave a slight residue. (Washes off with water.)

    Looks awesome! I should make one for myself sometime. Anyway, it's great to see you are having a good time on your trip across the U.S.

    Excellent video! I've been dealing with the exact same toolpath problem, and I did end up making a bounding box like you did. Really wish I could just have tickbox for it....

    Hey Winston, thanks for this video. G-Wizard says that a 1.5MM end mill is at 352% deflection with a stepdown of 0.5MM - did you not find this to be a problem? Is G-Wizard just very conservative?

    What brand of endmills do you use for metals and woods? btw amazing video!

    I've been looking everywhere for a low profile vise like that red one.... any info on it?

    • @WinstonMakes
      @WinstonMakes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the one Carbide3D sells. Only modest Holding power, but slimmer than almost everything out there. Little Machine Shop has a few that are a little taller, but worth checking out if you'll regularly be doing metal.

    Winston i would like to know if we can make dies on the nomad3 either bras or steel.

    • @WinstonMakes
      @WinstonMakes  ปีที่แล้ว

      Brass is absolutely manageable. Cuts just like aluminum, just go 30-50% slower. Steel is very tricks, small amounts using endmills smaller than 1/16" are theoretically possible but I have not done any myself.

    Damn that JPL_Richard guy...so picky! I noticed you set the z with paper, and not the built-in tool setter...and I don't recall you saying why...so, why? PS NICE VISE. PS2 I highly recommend these parallels ($15) at Little Machine Shop, Part Number: 2924 they are within 0.0001 (JPL_Richard approved)

    • @WinstonMakes
      @WinstonMakes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tool probe changes offset. You still need to set zero the first time.

      @@shophacks that is fair enough but you can't work like a government in murky muddy water where you can't get anything productive done by not having a transparency of where quality truly resides. This ring's truth on number of issues not just strictly in this video. I believe that's why I carbide 3d took him on was because he pursues results.
