Conduction:
Conduction is the transfer of heat through a solid material or between two touching surfaces. The rate of heat transfer by conduction can be determined using Fourier's Law of Heat Conduction:
Q = (k * A * ΔT) / d
Where:
Q is the heat transfer rate (in watts or joules per second)
k is the thermal conductivity of the material (in watts per meter-kelvin)
A is the cross-sectional area through which heat is transferred (in square meters)
ΔT is the temperature difference across the material (in kelvin or degrees Celsius)
d is the thickness of the material (in meters)
Convection:
Convection is the transfer of heat through the movement of a fluid (liquid or gas). The rate of heat transfer by convection can be calculated using Newton's Law of Cooling for free or forced convection:
Q = h * A * ΔT
Where:
Q is the heat transfer rate (in watts or joules per second)
h is the convective heat transfer coefficient (in watts per square meter-kelvin)
A is the surface area through which heat is transferred (in square meters)
ΔT is the temperature difference between the surface and the surrounding fluid (in kelvin or degrees Celsius)
Note: The value of h depends on the flow conditions and the properties of the fluid (e.g., velocity, viscosity, density). Obtaining the convective heat transfer coefficient often requires empirical correlations or experimental data.
Radiation:
Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves. The rate of heat transfer by radiation can be determined using the Stefan-Boltzmann Law:
Q = ε * σ * A * (T₁⁴ - T₂⁴)
Where:
Q is the heat transfer rate (in watts or joules per second)
ε is the emissivity of the surface (a dimensionless quantity between 0 and 1, representing the surface's ability to emit radiation)
σ is the Stefan-Boltzmann constant (approximately 5.67 x 10^-8 W/(m²·K⁴))
A is the surface area through which heat is transferred (in square meters)
T₁ and T₂ are the absolute temperatures of the two surfaces (in kelvin)
Note: The Stefan-Boltzmann Law assumes that the surfaces are ideal blackbodies. For non-blackbody surfaces, the emissivity factor (ε) is used to account for their radiation characteristics.
These equations provide a basic framework for calculating heat transfer rates. Remember to use consistent units throughout your calculations and consider any additional factors specific to your scenario, such as geometry, boundary conditions, and material properties.
