Fascinating form can follow necessary function. Love it.

Fun. Best city with so many big museums that don't charge admission for anyone.

Strange... there are two rolling bridges, onne in Paddington Basin, and this one in Cody Dock.... each rolls, but in a different way.

It would be great if you could a a clip show it from the canal/lock perspective and how it provides the additional clearance for boats to pass under.
I think the average layperson would gain a greater understanding of its purpose and simplicity in operation.

Why does it need to move?
I don’t understand the basic need of this complicated device. It is still very interesting, but what does it do other than roll into place? Why is it not fixed? Very confusing.

By rotating the whole bridge to the side, the floor of the bridge moves to the top, which makes space for higher boats to pass under the bridge.
You could also solve the problem by lifting the bridge up with a crane to make the space for higher boats.
The movement to the side is not needed to solve the problem of the space, it is just the way this solution works because it rotates on this track.

Thanks Der Fabi, I see how it increases clearance now, I had to watch again after you explained.
However the way the video is shot, it appears the bridge rolls against a solid bullhead, for example the view @5:08.
It’s a beautiful work, and I’d love to see it, but is it the waterway underneath actually functional?

@@davethetallguy it will be yes, when the dock is open
If you want to see an actually useless rolling bridge, Heatherwick's in Padington is that...

It's part of an arts precinct, so it is a piece of (installation) art as well as being a functional bridge - albeit a slow one - for allowing boats to pass.

I understand how it works, and it's pretty cool, but it does seem absolutely unnecessary. Why wouldn't they just basically have 2 drawbridges that meet in the middle to open for taller boats? This is overly complex.

Low energy?? Try doing that for twenty minutes!
