  • When I came across a newspaper article detailing a gathering held at my home in the 50's I knew I had to reproduce the cake that was described. Join me as I bake the cake and then come on over for a tea party!
    Recipes:
    Silver White Cake
2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
    3 teaspoon. baking powder
    1 teaspoon salt
    4 medium egg whites
    1/2 cup granulated sugar
    1/2 cup shortening
    1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons milk
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    1/4 teaspoon almond extract
    Heat oven to 375 F
Grease or line 2 cake pans with parchment paper. ( They should be either 8 inches wide and 1 1/4 inches deep or 9 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches deep)
Sift flour, baking powder and salt.
With electric mixer beat egg whites until foamy. Gradually add 1/2 cup of sugar beating until mixture has soft peaks.
In another bowl cream shortening with 1 cup of sugar.
Then alternately beat in flour and milk. Then add the extracts. Finally beat the egg white mixture in.
Turn into pans and bake 25 min.
    White Fudge Frosting:
    1/2 cup butter or margarine
    1 cup granulated sugar
    1/4 cup milk
4 1/2 cups sifted confectioners sugar
    Dash of salt
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
In saucepan melt butter. Add granulated sugar and milk. Bring to a boil stirring occasionally. Cool. Then add confectioners sugar until thick enough to spread. Add Vanilla.
I put Marachino Cherries on top as that seemed in keeping with the 50's ( also cherries aren't in season). However fresh ones would be nice too.
