FUN FACT: While George Washington Carver did not invent peanut butter, he did create his own recipe of it. He refused to patent it, however, because he felt like someone could do it better and improve on his methods. That's Carver's humility for you.

Moses and Susan Carver made sure George had education and the run of their home. Peanuts came from Peru first and peanut butter. But George did find many ingenious uses for peanuts. Crop rotation came to the USA from Britain colonist. George was an exceedingly intelligent man and worked to continue learning always. George and his brother did not want to stay with their mother. Moses and Susan were so nice.

in a book I read about him, he was also known to concoct paint in his lab and would, for free, use it to paint barns. One paint in partticualr he was known for was a vibrant blue paint, made from the red clay soil found in missouri. This man is an alchamist in my mind.

My grandmother knew him well since she graduated from Tuskegee Institute where he taught and her father taught at Tuskegee and both worked for Booker T Washington. I spent my childhood visiting the family house in Tuskegee and visiting the Carver Museum, still on the campus and run by the National Parks Service.

I first learned about this amazing man back in grade school, because there was an entire special school dedicated to a specific sort of "field trip" - our class spent an entire day there, and it was the most fun day of school I can remember - and that's saying a lot since I adored school even at the worst of times. The notion of the school (I think) was to show other ways of teaching kids than "sit down, be quiet, memorize." Every single class was hands-on in some way or other. We learned about mirrors, then made our own kaleidoscopes - learned about English culture (a very small amount) and while the teacher talked we ate snacks inspired by or directly drawn from English recipes. That kind of stuff. And throughout all of it we kept hearing about how Carver wanted every person to do the best they could with what they had - a paraphrase of his motivations, perhaps, but a useful one. There was no failing any of the projects or classes, there was no sharp criticism of one's work, there was a consistent and pervasive attitude that promoted creative thinking and just...just generally made us kids feel like we COULD do any damned thing we felt like doing in life. That was a first for a lot of us. I feel like that special school was very much keeping alive what Carver would've wanted.

Born a slave, than an orphan and shunned from education this man rose to heights that the majority of us will scarcely achieve. The saddest part though is that while this man should be an inspiration to us all, regardless of race, not a young person today could utter his name let alone recount his accomplishments. Maybe instead of embracing the criminals, thugs and thieves promoted by the media we should instead aspire to men like George Washington Carver.

I absolutely agree. I had heard his name but didn’t know his amazing story. Then when my kids were in early elementary school, I home schooled them til they each entered 3rd grade. A children’s book about GWC was included in the curriculum I followed. I myself sat and read the over 120 pg book in one late night sitting. Couldn’t put it down. Felt like I’d found a treasure. And personally speaking, loved his Christlike heart. And cannot wait to hug him in Heaven. Though Booker T had his merits, I so love the humility yet great spirit of GWC. His approach to helping people was different than Booker T. He wasn’t militant but created such inroads for both black people and any people that needed a pathway forward. From what I read, people seemed to just love him as a person, not just a great inventor. You are so right that we need men and leaders like this great brother. His leadership is the kind I would follow today. As opposed to the self-seeking political and educational “leaders” we usually see in the public arena. GWC is truly one of the greatest people in the history of America. Kids ought to be taught. His ENTIRE story. And adults should spend time reading about the “greats” instead of following celebrities and wasting their minds. There are too many great people to be inspired by. GWC, a real hero.

I'm surprised that Congress back in 1921 would even HEAR a speech from a black guy, let alone actually listen to him... 😟 That in itself was an impressive feat in that time period!

@Apex Gemini No. I have a low expectation of rich white racist assholes in government in the early 20th century, I was complimenting Mr. Carver on getting an audience with them and getting them to listen to him! 🙄

Simon whistler is a big deal in our house. I, however, take issue with why you didn’t reveal that mr Carver was castrated. I want the histories blemishes and all. You made a point in the Schindler bio that he was a venal man who if good would not be in position to do good when his humanity poked him.
