      You should definitely check out some of the historical spots around Manado! It's a great way to learn more about the different tribes and languages here, some of which are sadly disappearing. Visiting places like Fort Amsterdam (now Pasar 45), Fort Moraya, and the Tondano Church (oldest church in North Sulawesi) is a really cool way to experience a piece of history. I think most vloggers don't explore these sites enough, so it would be awesome if you did!

    If you're still around Manado or Tomohon, There are plenty of things to see especially the Minahasa cultures. You can try to visit Tondano, Langowan and Kawangkoan which is not really far from Manado/Tomohon. And also there are some places that you can visit in South Minahasa like Amurang, a bit south you will find Kotamobagu (Bolaang Mongondow Regency).
    I'm planning to travel from Tomohon to Kotamobagu on December 28th. If you want to come along, you are more than welcome!

    There's a saying here called 'Potas,' which essentially means someone steals your pet or kills them, either to sell, eat, or simply because they dislike the dog/cat (due to disliking the owner or because the pet is noisy, scary, etc.).
    Three of my dogs that I owned died this way: two when I was a child and one this year. This often happens during special holidays like Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas. It's a sad reality, and it occurs frequently.
    I'm concerned that this might happen again this Christmas and New Year's because many people will be going out to celebrate with their families, leaving their pets alone at home. If the government and the public don't take action, this will never stop.

      That’s horrible. At the time of filming this I didn’t realize how bad this really was. The government should really push down on this, but the Indonesian government is the most corrupt and useless I’ve ever seen first hand (except in Africa)

    • @FiediRPZ
      @FiediRPZ 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@MarkyTeriyaki I agree that corruption is a big problem here. The government isn't doing enough to stop it, and many corrupt officials get away with it. Lack of education and poverty also contribute to these issues. When people are desperate, they might make bad choices.
      But to be clear, not all Indonesians are like this. Many Indonesians are incredibly kind and trustworthy. It's mostly the government and the wealthy elite who are involved in corruption, often seeking to increase their own wealth.

    In my area in North Sumatra province, there are many restaurants that serve dog meat dishes. I myself have tried the taste and I don't want to be a hypocrite, dog meat is indeed delicious! I even gave it to my dog and he ate it happily😂😅. In our place there are many dog kidnappings and the thieves deposit/sell their stolen goods to the dealer/restaurant owner. That is common here.
    about the government's opinion: "not my business "

    • @MarkyTeriyaki
      @MarkyTeriyaki  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The problem is not the consumption, but the fact people are stealing pets. If the dog has been bred to consume I personally think it's fine because it's not a pet anymore, but if it belongs to someone who views it as a family member and it gets kidnapped and eaten one day that's a huge problem, it spreads fear and it's also a huge safety concern. And of course the government won't do anything, Indonesia is one of the most corrupt countries in all of Asia haha

      that's right! some time ago there was a viral video about government candidate who didn't even know what the greenhouse effect was..😂😂 he said "to prevent global warming we have to reduce the construction of greenhouses in Indonesia! that proves that the Indonesian government is of poor quality!

    Disclaimer: I could never eat dogs, cats, guinea pigs, or any animals I personally see as pets. That said, I fully acknowledge my own hypocrisy here. The truth is, there’s no universal standard that determines which animals are considered pets and which are livestock. Cultural and societal norms vary, so unless you’re vegetarian or vegan, it’s hard to justify judging others for what they consider acceptable to eat.
    In Indonesia, the majority of the population is Muslim, and in Islam, dogs are considered ritually unclean. Most Muslims wouldn’t even touch dogs, let alone eat them. However, I recognize that some non-Muslim communities in Indonesia, such as those in parts of North Sulawesi, North Sumatra, or East Nusa Tenggara, do consume dog meat. For these communities, dogs may have historically been seen as a convenient source of protein.
    I personally could never bring myself to eat them, but I won’t impose my perspective on others. Food choices are deeply tied to culture, history, and circumstance, and it’s important to approach these differences with understanding rather than judgment.

    • @MarkyTeriyaki
      @MarkyTeriyaki  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I 100% agree that we shouldn’t pick what animals are okay and aren’t okay to eat since all life should have the same value.
      My problem are these two things:
      1. When they STEAL pets from people and k!ll them, essentially traumatizing the owners and causing fear of safety in the area because a family member got kidnapped and k!lled for no other reason than money.
      2. When they’re treated in inhumane ways like kept in extremely small cages or beaten to pulp for no apparent reason.
      This doesn’t just apply for cats or dogs, but ANY animal.

    • @KilanEatsandDrinks
      @KilanEatsandDrinks 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ I think we can all agree that stealing is wrong, and kidnapping someone’s pet to be killed is absolutely reprehensible. This applies to any animal someone considers a pet. I know people who swear by chickens and pigs as loving, intelligent pets. And just the other day, I came across a story of a family that keeps a cow as a pet. She’s enormous, but she acts like a dog, and it’s the cutest thing ever 😭
      When it comes to dogs (or cats and other “typical” pets), kidnappers often target them because they’re well-fed, healthy, and easier to catch than strays, which may be sick or aggressive. The sad reality is that banning the consumption of dog meat won’t necessarily stop these thefts. So the question is: if we set aside judgments about what is considered a fair meat source, how do we address this issue?
      One theoretical solution could be the introduction of regulated dog farms for meat consumption. After all, that’s how society justifies eating chicken, pork, and beef; because these animals are specifically raised for food. But TBH even entertaining this scenario feels deeply uncomfortable. It forces us to confront the arbitrary lines we draw between pets and livestock, which are largely shaped by culture and personal bias.
      Ultimately, this is why veganism and vegetarianism are the more ethical approaches. They avoid these moral dilemmas entirely by refusing to categorize animals based on their “purpose” to humans. Unfortunately, I’m still too attached to my streaky bacon and beef rendang to make that leap; so yes, I’ll admit I’m a hypocrite. 😭

    • @MarkyTeriyaki
      @MarkyTeriyaki  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ideally I wouldn’t mind meat consumption as long as it’s produced from free roaming animals that live nice lives, but it is less cost efficient and in the end that’s what matters the most to people

    • @KilanEatsandDrinks
      @KilanEatsandDrinks 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@MarkyTeriyaki Well, I’ve noticed a growing movement toward ethical farming over the past decade: cage-free, free-roaming, pasture-raised animals that are treated with care before they’re used for meat. It’s definitely a step in the right direction, but even after all this time, it’s still in its developmental phase. I can totally see this type of farming becoming a global standard in the future.
      But can the world stomach it if the animals being ethically farmed are our beloved furry companions? We applaud farmers for their humane treatment of chickens or cows, but if we swapped them out for dogs, would we still see “Animal Welfare Approved” or “Global Animal Partnership” certifications? No, because Western norms about what animals are acceptable to farm for meat are still deeply ingrained; and those norms often end up being imposed on other parts of the world.
      Like I said, I fully admit my hypocrisy here. I’ll be over in my corner quietly enjoying my pork schnitzel and Angus steak slathered in kecap manis, because at the end of the day, I’m just as complicit in this system as anyone else.
