Akai Force: Make Interesting Music PT1 - Space & Groove

  • I've had quite a few requests to do some more videos about building tracks, rather than technical tutorials, so to that end here is the first in a 3 part series in which I'll go over some workflow tips and general music-making knowledge I've gained by being really old. In this episode, we take a look at the super-important subjects of space and groove. (I'm very sorry about the occasional creaky chair noise in this, it'll be fixed in the next video)

This was really good. I think a lot people are missing the value in this video. This is very much in the process how I work. I think of the groove as a sum of the whole, and each track fits like complex puzzle pieces. Lots of great sonic interplay. Great video. This technique is also great for dub fx style playing too.

Thank you! I’m really glad you found it useful. Jigsaw is a good way of explaining it, I should have said that in the video 🙂

Another super video in which I will most certainly apply your way of thinking when creating variations and adding that 'groove' element when building a track.👍👍👍

I couldn't agree more about groove. It doesn't come from one thing but how they interact and you can't hear the groove without each part. I think most miss the groove in electronic music. I recently taught my sister-in-law to listen to electronic music completely differently than she did before by showing her what I was focusing on and hearing compared to what she was focusing on. For example, the kick and snare almost don't exist to me in electronic music because it has to be there, it would be like looking at a house and focusing mostly on the foundation and not the architectural design on top of that of foundation.
Great video, one of the better ones I have seen on YT and I watch a lot of them, how to see more from you.

That house analogy is great, I like it! Really glad you enjoyed the video, got plenty more in the pipeline so watch this space! 🎹🙂

This video is very interesting, whether with or without the Akai Force, so I thank you for not only increasing my G.A.S. but also my knowledge!

I just ordered the Akai Force ( mainly because of the Ableton integration ) and was looking around for general instruction & inspiration. I have to say, your channel is excellent, with great flow and a really good mix of common sense & intelligent instruction. I hope your channel grows ( I've subscribed ) and you get much more support, as you deserve it ( selfishly, create as many Akai Force videos as possible please, as I want to get cracking on this beast when it arrives 😜 )

Hi Michael, that’s fantastic feedback thank you, I appreciate it! I hope you enjoy exploring the Force, and let me know if there are any subjects you would like to see covered. I’ve got lots more Force videos on the way, and thanks for subscribing! 🙂

Off the top of my head, I can see you did a little jam with the Digitone, which I have, so maybe a short video on connectivity to the AF would be good. Brands like Akai are great at selling the connectivity options to other outboard gear, but never really expand on this promise much, so any videos you can do on setting up outboard gear like the Digitone would be great

Agreed. Groove is in the gaps.

Try a very slight shuffle on all your tracks. Like 5 percent. Or 10 percent. Makes all the difference.

Have to admit my stuff is generally sounding like the first example (So I liked it !) but the example with groove is leagues apart. The point about interest remaining when muting parts hammers the point home nicely. excellent tip about starting with interest and building on it , am guilty of starting with 4 4 kicks !

Hi Paul, I’m glad you found it useful! Yeah O do the ‘mute test’ quite a bit as I’m composing tracks, just to make sure it all hangs together. Thanks for watching!

HI, maybe I could ask something. When I, pressing Scene Launch Button and after a few second another Scene launch button instantly is starting play another line. How change this to the mode that one line will be waiting to finish and after that another one will start ? I cant find this in settings.

    • @MaxipokMusic

Hi Piotr. Look at the numbered track select buttons at the bottom of the Force. You will see they have labels that’s say 4 bars, 8 bars etc. Press and hold shift. Then press the button above the scene change value you want. If your clips are 4 bars, then select 4, etc.

A question about the Force - does it have similar software reliability problems as the MPC range? Basically, would you worry about it doing something weird or crashing on a gig?

    • @MaxipokMusic
      @MaxipokMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Mine has been completely stable since I’ve had it, no crashes at all. There was a little period when it was a bit laggy after the major update, but they fixed that with a patch recently. However I’m probably the wrong person to ask, as I don’t use it with an interface plugged in, and I think that’s where some of the problems occur. The Akai Force Users group on Facebook is probably a better place to ask, it has quite a few members who gig with the Force.

Mine crashed alot after an update then it stopped.
Then it updated again about month ago and since then it's locked up and had to unplug it for it to reboot.
Lost about 2 hours of work because I didn't save...
So it's not too bad but for live event I'd be scared to use it.
