  • Her Excellency Mary McAleese addressing everyone on the Great Island of Ireland in her St. Patrick's Day Message, 2008.
    A Soilse, Uachtarán na hÉireann Máire Mhic Giolla Íosa ag caint le achan duine ar oileán na hÉireann, 2008.
    Speech:
    Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig ar chlann mhór dhomhanda na nGael, sa bhaile agus ar fud na cruinne, ar ár lá náisiúnta ceiliúrtha féin.
    Ta ríméad orm beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig a chur ar gach duine atá páirteach i gceiliúradh na bliana seo, is cuma cé acu in Éirinn nó thar sáile atá siad. Tugann ceiliúradh na Féile Pádraig deis ar leith dúinn ár naisc oidhreachta agus ceana a threisiú le clann dhomhanda na nGael, agus lenár gcairde ar fud an domhain. Is léiriú iontach é ar an lúcháir sin na beatha atá ag na Gaeil, agus is mó an chúis atá againn ceiliúradh a dhéanamh i mbliana ná mar a bhí le tamall de bhlianta. Cuireadh fáilte roimh an déabhlóidiú rialtais arís i dTuaisceart Éireann, agus tá tús á chur anois le ré nua ar oileán na hÉireann, a thugann geallúintí síochána, ratha agus comhpháirtíochta dúinn uile. Ba mhaith liom buíochas a ghabháil libh go léir as an tacaíocht agus an spreagadh a thug sibh dúinn le linn ár dturais fhada dheacair go dtí an pointe comhaontaithe seo. Níl aon cheist faoi ach go bhfuil an barr feabhais le teacht fós!
    Ta súil agam go mbainfidh na hinimircigh nua iomadúla chun na hÉireann, a bheidh ag ceiliúradh inár gcomhluadar i mbliana, inspioráid ón imirceach sin ba mhó tionchar ar fad, Naomh Pádraig féin. Ta a ainm agus ainm na hÉireann ceangailte go dlúth lena chéile sa lá atá inniu ann, agus éiríonn a chlann níos flúirsí agus níos ilchineálaí gach bliain. Guím gach rath oraibh go léir ar an ócáid ceiliúrtha seo na Féile Pádraig 2008. Bainigí taitneamh as, cibé áit a bhfuil sibh! Go gcuire Naomh Pádraig a bheannacht de shíor ar oileán na hÉireann agus ar a mhuintir.
    Speech translated:
    Blessings upon every person who is a member of the worldwide Irish family, whether at home or abroad, on our national holiday.
    I am delighted to send St Patrick's Day greetings to all those taking part in this year's celebrations, whether at home in Ireland or around the world. St Patrick's festival is our special opportunity to deepen and celebrate the bonds of heritage and affection which link the global, Irish family and its friends worldwide. It is a great showcase of the Irish love of life and this year, more than any in our recent past, is one to savour with special joy. The welcome return of devolved government to Northern Ireland has brought to the island of Ireland a promising era of peace, prosperity and partnership. Thank you for all the support and encouragement you invested in our long, hard journey to this time of concord. There can be little doubt that the best is yet to come!
    I hope that the many new immigrants to Ireland who will be joining the celebrations this year will take inspiration from the most influential immigrant of them all, St Patrick himself. Today his name and that of Ireland are synonymous and each year as we gather in his honour, we can see the widening global reach and richly diverse character of his extensive family. To each one of you I wish a wonderful St Patrick's Day 2008. Enjoy it wherever you are! May St Patrick long continue to bless you, his beloved Ireland and her people.

      Cathal Poyais-Duggan kinda false, since gaelic is in fact a root for celtic languages, see irish and scottish, but gaeilge is litterally irish in irish. By the by, irish is also called irish gaelic while scot is also called scottish gaelic, meaning you could just say gaelic if the person you are talking to knows the context.

      My Grandmum only spoke English if she was angry with some white English speaker. It usually involved a fistfight shortly thereafter. I'm grateful to have Irish as my native language (never learned a word of English until I was ten), because it lets me feign not speaking English, which I use at least once every day. I know people who've known me for more than ten years and have no clue I can speak and understand English whatsoever, nonetheless that I can do so fluently.

    • @Clodaghbob
      @Clodaghbob 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Irish is mandatory in primary and secondary schools. Only 1.7% speak Irish on a _daily basis_ but all five million of us spent approx 12 years learning it. A lot of older people are re-learning it and, apparently, there are currently 1.10 million people actively learning Irish. And there are prospects for the younger crowd. Since January 2022 Irish is a full official language of the European Union which means that all EU documents (not just treaties) will have an Irish language version… which means jobs for translators. The future is hopeful. 🤗👍🇮🇪

      Oh that's a very deceiving statistic. That's only accounting for Native speakers who only speak Irish in Gaeltachtaí. When you account for people who speak both Irish and English at home, or speak it work, or speak the language outside of a Gaeltacht, that number is far higher. The language is not evenly dispersed throughout the country, the west of the country has far more speakers per capita than the midlands or Dublin. Everyone in Ireland must learn Irish in school, but many of our schools are Gaelscoileanna, meaning that all subjects, except for English are taught through Irish. Also, sadly, there's an economic component outside of Gaeltachtaí. Wealthier families can afford to send their kids to the Gaeltacht for the summer and there is a correlation between wealth and proficiency in Irish in many areas. But yah, that number really does not reflect reality. I grew up in Kerry and live in Galway city now and pretty much every Irish person I know is either fluent or at least, conversational. The younger generation also definitely have a more positive attitude towards the language.

    • @Clodaghbob
      @Clodaghbob 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seanosull2884 That’s a good point about the 1.7% being in the Gaeltachtaí. I was wondering how that percentage was arrived at given that no one really knows how much Irish is spoken in the rest of the country.
      P.S. How does someone speaking quality Irish (Cúige Mumhan) cope among people speaking _foreign_ Irish (Cúige Chonnacht)? Just stirring the pot a bit …in case a crust forms on the topic! 🤪😂😅😂

      Gaelic was a very common name for it until a generation or two ago. I have relatives who called it that (west of Ireland). If you're speaking English, Irish is fine, Gaelic if you are talking about the language in a broader sense, as in the language itself the Gaelic dialects, including those of Scotland, are not given different names but are identified by their geographical location. (Tá Gaeilge na hAlban ag an bhfear sin - 'that man speaks Scottish Gaelic'. And this is also the case in reverse, a native Scottish Gaelic speaker would say 'Gaidhlig na Mumhan' , excuse my attempt at SG spelling, to refer to the Irish of Munster.)
      And Fear gaeelach is correct, in Donegal Irish they still call it 'Gaeilic' in their dialect, and this was also a common name for the language all over North Connacht and Leinster before the language declined.

    To all the people in the comments who are trying to argue with the non-native English speakers who are saying that this sounds like English, what you must understand is that they are correct. Trust me. As English speakers we do not understand that we sound 'English', meaning 'native speakers of the English language and most of the phonemes, intonations and stress patterns that come with that', not meaning 'of English nationality'.
    Be honest with yourself, if somebody played you a recording of a German speaker from Munich and a German speaker from Switzerland, or a Spanish speaker from Mexico or Colombia, Spain even, would you be able to tell the difference (assuming you haven't learned both of those languages)?
    Yes, the words she is using are 'Irish words', but Irish is not taught in schools with the native phonetics of the Irish language but with Englishy approximations based on the native/first language of the majority of Irish people.

      It can be called Gaelic. It's a common misconception spread by Irish youngsters who learned in school that it can't.
      Visit the Gaeltacht in Donegal, whether they are speaking English or Irish they call the language 'Gaeilic'.
      On the Aran Islands older men refer to it as Gaeilge in Irish but Gaelic if they are referring to it in English.
      In the Munster dialects it's 'Gaelainn' in Irish and Irish or Gaelic when referring to it in English (at least by native speakers above a certain age)

    • @sarahbear4848
      @sarahbear4848 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cigh7445 I had Irish people themselves (at a bar in Dublin--not youngsters) tell me that they call Irish, Irish (when they're speaking English) and Gaeilge when they're speaking Irish. Gaeilge isn't even pronounced the same as Gaelic. Whereas in Scottish Gaelic, their word for their own language is Gàidhlig, which is pronounced very similarly to how Gaelic is pronounced in (American) English.

Irish has quite a few native speakers, for a language that has been so persecuted. it'd beyond me why Irish people (and some ppl from other celtic countries) treat their languages so badly. effects of colonization? probably tbh.

      Yup, there are similar languages like it such as Scottish Gàidhlig and also Welsh which is also Celtic but not Gaelic, if that makes sense.
