The Sun Sneeze Gene

  • I have the photic sneeze reflex so I sneeze when I look at bright light.
    Check out 23andMe: ve42.co/23andme
    *So technically the single nucleotide swap (C instead of T) is not actually in a gene per se but in an intergenic region on chromosome 2. It's also not clear exactly how this affects physiology or causes the sun sneeze but there is correlative evidence that every copy of this single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is associated with a 1.3x increase in likelihood of having the photic sneeze reflex.
    I have wanted to make a video about sun-sneezing for a long time. It is something I've experienced my whole life. When I go from a dark room indoors into full sunlight I invariably sneeze. I thought everyone did it. So my original question was why do people sneeze when they see bright light? That led me to consider what possible evolutionary advantages there could be to sneezing in sunlight. The obvious advantage to me is that sunlight kills pathogens of which there may be many in your snot or mucus. So sneezing in sunshine is a much better idea than sneezing inside a dark, damp cave where you may be living.

    I actually appreciate having this gene. When I wanna let out a big sneeze but I'm having trouble, I just stare at a bright light, usually my lamp or the sun. It's the most satisfying feeling ever.

    Hey Veritasium!
    Just a clarification- the optic nerve (cranial nerve II) is the nerve responsible for transmitting information from the retina to the visual cortex in the back of the brain. The ophthalmic nerve (first branch of the trigeminal nerve, cranial nerve 5) is a nerve that- like you said- receives sensory information from the upper face. However, these are two very different nerves- if light were to stimulate the maxillary branch, it would have to do so through the brain itself :)

    • @kassepirai5310
      @kassepirai5310 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Brody Wiles Brody Wiles wait doesn't the ophthalmic nerve also supply branches into the cornea, iris and the ciliary body of the eye, as well as the conjunctiva and and lacrimal gland? AND also the upper face and other parts.
      Although I don't really know how the light would directly affect these parts of the eye... I guess any stimulation of these parts of the eye would be indirect, like a response to bright light with the ciliary body. It is interesting that cross over has been seen between the lacrimal nerve (serving the lacrimal gland, pretty much like the tear gland, among others) and branch of the maxillary gland.
      But mainly I just wanted to mention the ophthalmic and the eye thing.

    • @gryyphyn8639
      @gryyphyn8639 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The predominant thinking, as I understand it, is the stimulation of the trigeminal nerve causes muscle contractions in the sinus cavity that simulate the itchy nose feeling which stimulates the nervous sneeze response.
      Of note is at least some people who experience photic sneezing are able to do so with lamps. I can look at a light and sneeze much of the time. It's pretty irritating, though, when I need to sneeze and can't. That's a bit painful and irritating and causes pretty severe eye watering.

    • @scottdogg529
      @scottdogg529 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Brody. Not necessarily... some reflexes are not processed by the brain but are affected by the spinal cord. Since the cranial nerves sit just below the brain and I don't know if they are connected to the spinal cord or directly to the brain there is a chance it is just a reflex like stepping on a tack, retracting your foot as you straighten your other leg.

    I was looking at your diagram at 4:47 and realized that I've got nerve damage in my chin, so maybe that was interfering with my sense of smell since they're on the same nerve cluster? So I blocked one nostril, smelled, blocked the other, smelled again - and then it all smelled normal! Sorry for gushing. This is a big deal for me. Thank you for educating. My doctor actually didn't believe me that this was happening to me and said that I have a pollen allergy... but it didn't make sense to me because it also happened in winter. From my earliest memories, from way back when I was 3 years old, I had this reflex. I literally described how it feels like there's a short circuit and that I can feel the sunlight intensity with my nose.
    You have no idea how helpful this video is when I try to explain why I start sneezing every time I go out of dim-lit environment. It calms down after a short while but the initial reaction is quite spontaneous and I was surprised to hear from friends that most people don't react the same way.

    I repeat sneeze; anything up to 10 sneezes in a row is just a "something has triggered the sneeze like dust or pollen", anything over 10 is _always_ a sign that I'm about to come down with a cold or flu.
    I've had to master the art of _"The Open Eyed Sneeze®™©"_ because driving a car, especially at high speeds, and have the sun suddenly burst from behind a cloud which then triggers up to 10 sneezes is really no fun at all!
