Agreed, all great points. I'm just a hobbyist (at the moment) but really love photography for the craft of it. I'm also addicted to wonderfully designed things. That has led me to Fuji-X (my system of choice for the last 10 years or so). Maybe Sony, Canon, Nikon are "better" cameras, but I don't get NEAR the satisfaction I get when holding and shooting with my X-Pro3. It's just more fun. Sony's, for example, are so ugly to me I lose interest quickly (and I know that's subjective).
A few years ago I picked up a used Leica M. I don't know what I expected, but it's the only camera that has competed with my Fujifilm cameras in terms of pure "fun". Maybe it's the rangefinder. I'm definitely a lot worse with that camera, but for whatever reason, it do feel slightly more satisfaction when I get the shot. It's like I worked harder for it, and actually had to apply some semblance of skill.
Anyway, looking forward to the next one 👍

Being a mediocre photographer helps enormously. I know I can use any camera and get the same results, most of which get deleted. My problem is that I don’t go out and use my camera often enough and I moved away from cameras with lots of menus and programmatic it tons mainly because I forget how I’d set the camera up. I bought a Leica for two reasons. First, I could pick it up and just use it without having to think about settings. Second, while I could’ve done that with other cameras, I’d always wanted a Leica and I decided life is too short not to indulge myself at a time when I briefly had the funds to do so. I’m happy and that’s what counts. Off to delete some more images now…

Last I did photo, I was using an old Spotmatic with the 50/1.4 SMC Tak. The main issue with focus was needing a correcting diopter for the eye piece. That was good for going from critically sharp being in the right place on maybe two frames out of thirty six to thirty.
Shooting street, one doesn't have much time to focus. It's been long enough that I suspect that even with the optical help, I'd botch things badly. My camera handling chops are in the basement I suspect.

I never fully realized just how shallow even 4 is at 3-5' on FF until I shot an M.
When you miss you can really bite it. When your muscle memory doesn't push that lens back to infinity after a series of shots and you come to focus a new scene and you cant even find your RF patch, oooooof. The moment is gone before you even realized you where you were on the DOF scale.
Also if you need to slow down slap a manual lens on anything. Go get a Nikon D600 for like $300 and a $100 manual AIS lens. Output will be VERY similar to an M10. Not the same experience as an M, not the same compactness as an M, but not a lot in it at the end of the day.

Back in the 90's I begun to shoot events a lot. Usually in quite dark places. And despite the fact that my Nikon FM2 had a quite bright viewfinder there was a need for autofocus camera. I went for Canon course it was a magnitude cheeper than Nikon in those days, so it was a no brainer. The thing that pissed me off the most is that in order to buy it I had to sell my beloved FM2, something I regret to this day...

Manual focus is a skill. It is like a sport or any kind of musical instrument, you must PRACTICE. Zone focus is no different. If you are gonna zone focus you have to practice that even more. And nothing will humble you quicker than an old rangefinder.
Starting when I was 12, there was no autofocus. Coming up shooting skateboarding I had to learn to focus fast. I literally used to go on walks and just practice focus, making myself shoot on the D of "one one thousand". Very pricey back then as digital didn't even exist, and paying for developing and film on a dishwashers pay was painful. So now a days there is no excuse for not practicing manual focus other than laziness, if you want to manual focus that is.
5 years ago I would have easily said I was faster manual focusing than any autofocus system but today it is humanly impossible to be faster than some of these systems. Unless you are dealing with tricky scenes where the camera just doesn't know what YOU want in focus on. I still prefer manual focus and use it predominantly but if something is time sensitive (like I only have the subject for a few minutes and want as many keepers for a client to choose from) or it's fast action or extremely low light, I will use the SHIT out of that autofocus. Using the tools at our disposal when we need them in order to get pictures we need or want is the beauty of all this technology.
As far as the "prestige" of owning a Leica, that shit is nonsense and for people who are impressionable and insecure. I have very cheap AND very expensive equipment. The stuff that I touch most often and I rely on greatly is expensive. The stuff that sits on stands or in a drawer or case most of the time and does the same job, the same way as 100 other products like it, is cheap.
Really appreciate your videos and the way you talk about more than gear. Keep it up man.

My highest personal test wasn’t using my Leica on a everyday basis, but not having it after being stolen was. After that, I got Nikon, Canon, Olympus… Then I started using my iPhone exclusively. Got the camera bug again and fell in love with the Sigma DP1 Merril ( Still!), added an X100V and an XT4. Btw, Out of probably being simplistic or plain lazy I shoot on manual. For now I’m photographing “Landscape Portraits” with a Viltrox 75, 1.2 ♥️… Ok, now the confessions: I can forget the feelings, the unique colors and the jealous glances I used to get whenever I was out shooting the crap out of everything while showing off her glorious red dot. I’m already eyeing my second Leica (New of course )but deciding is getting hard. Lastly but necessary, I won’t give a F3 to be labeled “snobbish” again.

commented on one of your 262 videos, and I finally got my m240p after using MF on my xpro2.... lol lemme tell you, im definitely ass 40% of the time, and I love it haha. MF on fuji with an evf and focus peaking does not give you the same feel as a rangefinder patch. but that's what I wanted, I only use it for personal work and its been too much fun, and out of focus photos are kinda nice sometimes lol depending hahah. Best advice for someone wanting a Leica is to get it for the process of photo making. You'll 1000% miss more shots than autofocus. you'll get frustrated sometimes, and zone focusing when your new is not as easy as your favorite TH-camr would describe it as. lol it takes a lot of practice..... However from the finders on my Mamiya 7ii, Mamiya Press, Fuji GSw690iii I know it's hard. Hard to use. And portraits never come out how you want them, the ears might be sharp but never the eyes. And subsequently most of the Leica shots I see on Flickr are a little soft. Bear in mind the photographer has probably binned most of the worst ones too and we see 2%. This is the best glass in the world and I'm looking at soft shots. Madness. 🙃

I love using the Leica and now rarely use my Nikon Z system; but, I still use the Nikon if I HAVE to get the shot (as much as a hobbyist ever HAS to get a shot). Like you say in this video: I have more fun with my Leica, but I am not as good with my Leica as with my Nikon. However, when I DO pick up my Nikon I find I'm much better with the Nikon than I was previously. I’m also one of those ‘if I have it I use it’ types. So I’d just be firing off many shots, missing them and not getting the composition I wanted. So when I say the M10 slows me down - it certainly does. It’s not a computer with so many settings to lock in. I just grab it, check my exposure and go. When I get a shot I love I find it so rewarding! Sometimes I come home and my images suck. That’s ok. I just try again next time. I could’ve bought a brand new top of the line body or a really good lens and mid range body. I really might just sell it after a month, but I had to know if my many years of yearning for a rangefinder was just smoke or real. At the price I got it for I’ll lose at most a few hundred and at best make a few hundred so I’ll take it as a rental fee at worst and at the end I’ll be able to put it behind me if it doesn’t work out and I won’t have the “what if” lingering for the rest of my life.

I think you said you tried two Leica M cameras: one was a 262 but IIRC the other wasn’t specified. You mentioned having to slow down with them in part because everything required manual settings. However, my Leica M11 can be used either completely manually or with the ISO and/or aperture automated to make the workload a bit easier (of course, one still has to be mindful of whether the automatically chosen ISO values aren’t too high to be useful).
It’s obvious that Leica M film or digital cameras aren’t for everyone for several reasons. First, they are generally very expensive. Second, getting good at using a rangefinder takes time and some folks like yourself either don’t like rangefinders (which is understandable) or simply can’t adapt to them (possibly because of eyesight issues). Frankly, the success rate (in terms of critically nailing the desired focus) using either a rangefinder or a split-screen focuser (e.g., as in Nikon or Olympus OM-1 SLRs) is relatively low with fast lenses (even lower for fast and long focal length lenses). Third, while Leica M cameras can be used for wildlife and/or sports photography, they are relatively limited for those genres largely because the lens choices at long focal lengths are sparse or non-existent.
Over the years, I owned a variety of cameras including a Minolta SRT-101 SLR (ok, but not my favorite), Olympus OM-1 (compact system, great ergonomics, I gave mine away but will buy another one used), Nikon F SLR (loved it and the glass), Nikon N90 SLR (never liked the electronic rewind), Nikon D70 DSLR, Nikon D200 DSLR, Canon EOS 6D DSLR. I found the menu systems of the latter 3 to be unnecessarily complicated and thus rarely used those cameras.
I don’t consider myself a Leica fanboy (IMO, cameras and lenses are just tools), but I really enjoy using a variety of its cameras and the lenses are generally high quality (and most M lenses are compact). The digital versions have much simpler menus compared to those in Nikon and Canon cameras. Also, I prefer Leica’s simple industrial design (e.g., very few buttons). In the end, taking a good photo requires reasonably nailing the exposure triangle (shutter speed, aperture, and ISO), focus, and composition, so I don’t want a camera with lots of buttons on it (if someone else wants a more complex camera, that’s their business). I haven’t used modern Sony mirrorless digital cameras, so I can’t comment on their menu system (I’ve seen lots of great images taken with them though).
Over the last several years, I had a variety of Leica cameras including a digital CL (terrific and fun small 24 MP APS-C camera that can use a variety of lenses: L mount autofocus, Leica M mount, Nikon, etc. with an adapter), Q2 Monochrom (fixed high quality 28 mm f/1.7 AF or manual focus lens, full-frame non-Bayer B&W sensor; a fantastic camera that I regret selling and will replace soon), SL2 (full frame 47 MP sensor with in-body image stabilization, can use the same types of lenses as the digital CL; not as compact and lightweight as a CL or M body, but a great camera), M11 (great camera, and can be used with a very expensive electronic viewfinder that markedly increases the success rate of in-focus shots, not for everyone), and M6 TTL film camera (purchased previously owned recently but hasn’t been used much yet).
Long ago, I used film cameras to help pay for college. I also have won photography competition awards back then (frankly, I never thought the winning images were that great). My hit rate for “technically good” photos was high, but only a small percentage of the images were compelling (if I shot more, I’m confident that hit rate would have improved).
The good thing about digital cameras is that one can practice a lot to get better at essentially no monetary cost. The learning curve with film cameras requires more time and money. I won’t use my M6 TTL film camera much until I get to a higher level of proficiency with the M11. I recently bought an Arca-Swiss F field 6x9 view camera. It’s really slow and relatively expensive to use with film, so I will buy a used Phase 1 medium format digital back to speed up the leaning process digital. I got this camera because its movements (tilt, swing, rise/fall) can do things that a mirrorless camera can’t and the process of using it is fun. Hopefully some shots I take with it will be compelling.
I have a few questions for you.
    1) Does Leica state advertise that their products will make anyone a better photographer? Steve Huff and Matt Osborne (MrLeica) wrote reviews on why one might consider using Leica cameras. I’m not sure which windmill you think you’re fighting.
    2) Can you show professional images you took with another brand digital camera that are really good? None of the shots you showed taken with an M camera are that compelling. Justin Mott’s work with Leica M cameras looks darn good.

    • @DeeRosa
      @DeeRosa  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

I didn’t say any of this. I owned a 262. I rented other Leica cameras. Shot a Q that I owned. I actually said these cameras don’t make you slow down and that’s a choice you can have on any camera.

    • @johnkasianowicz6536
      @johnkasianowicz6536 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

In the video, you said that you use Leica M cameras for 90% and 100% of your professional and personal work, respectively. I was trying to understand which digital M cameras (other than the 262, introduced in 2015) you actually used. A more modern M camera with an optional EVF might be a better fit (use-wise) for you. They also have auto ISO and aperture priority capabilities, which can make taking photos easier and faster than adjusting the exposure triangle manually for each shot. That said, the M11 and its optional EVF aren’t cheap.
If you have an issue with the M rangefinder (to be frank, it’s not for everyone), that’s understandable because it is not as fast as focusing with a good AF camera, and it is not amenable to anyone with poor eyesight. However, plenty of people shoot terrific work with M cameras solely using the rangefinder.
Natively, the model 262 rangefinder has a 0.68X magnification, which helps with framing 28 mm lenses, but hinders accurate focusing. The 262 has frame lines for 35/135, 28/90, and 50/75 mm lenses. To frame with lenses with focal lengths sub 28 mm, it might be better to use a higher magnification on the rangefinder and use the Leica Frankenfinder (with parallax correction between 0.5 m and infinity) to frame the composition (I have one and it works for 16, 18, 21, 24, and 28 mm lenses). Surely, the Frankenfinder is not cheap, so an optional EVF on a more modern M camera (see below) might be a better choice.
If you used an M11, you could get (an expensive) optional high resolution EVF to increase the chance of nailing critical focus (you can magnify the focus point in the EVF as well). I find it really helps with critical focus on even the Leica Noctilux-M 75 mm f/1.25, which has a very shallow depth of field wide open (I still need more practice with that combination). In addition, menu-selectable optional focus peaking can be helpful too, but some might find it annoying.
I just don’t understand what windmill you’re fighting. If Leica kit is too expensive for you, I get that (I buy most of my Leica M lenses used and have purchased a few Voigtländer VM lenses to keep the cumulative cost down). If the M rangefinder is too slow for consistently focusing and framing well in your hands no matter how much you practice (if one swaps out lenses a lot, they need to remember which framing lines are appropriate; not hard, but it takes a few seconds to think about it), I get that too. If the rangefinder resulted in losing images because one forgets to take the lens cap off (which you didn’t state, but it’s a possibility if one doesn’t chimp between shots), I get that as well. Every camera system has its learning curve, pros, and cons. If an older digital Leica M system isn’t suitable for you, you could either get a more modern Leica M (or a different brand’s) rig.
Leica’s relatively high prices, which you mentioned, aren’t news. Neither is the obvious fact that a rangefinder isn’t as fast as a superb AF system (but I recently worked with a pro photographer, who publishes Leica-related TH-cam content, whose successful hit rate was very high using a rangefinder and he works very quickly). M cameras and lenses are about portability, high quality, and simplicity. No camera system to date checks all the boxes.
When I recently took a lesson with the TH-cam-based photographer, he invited a model to work with us. That style of photography (faster-paced and fluid) pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to realize that I needed to get far better using the M rangefinder and even improve my use of the optional EVF. With the latter, I’d center the subject, focus, and then move the camera to get the composition I wanted. I discovered that in a fast-paced situation, I wasn’t recomposing properly. Apparently, my thick frame glasses don’t allow me to see the entire field of view of even the EVF. Vulnerability exposed, so now I have to work hard on that issue!

If you need to slow down, just slow down you said. Now there's an idea!
I own a Nikon z6ii and the number reason Nikon is bashed is because of its AF performance not being up to scratch with Sony and Canon. And it's true the Z6ii AF is not up to scratch with Canon and Sony. But there's more to a camera than AF performance and I have no need for fast AF.
The Leica is even worse than the Nikon because it doesn't have AF at all. If I shot sport or fashion or journalism for a living I'd ditch Nikon tomorrow and invest in Canon or Sony. No doubt about it.
And so if Leica is the best, what is it the best at? AF speed? Lens selection? Frames per second?
    What then?
Build quality? Yes. Ergonomics? Yes. Image quality? Bingo!
I would only buy a Leica if I could try one alongside my Nikon. I would use both to take the same photos during a session, and if, on a double blind study, I could pick the Leica images on the computer from the Nikon images then I might have a actual good reason to buy the Leica. If I could not pick the difference I would not have a good reason to buy the Leica and buyers remorse would soon follow
I grew up using a Contax 1 rangefinder camera and I love the rangefinder system but if I was a wedding photographer that camera would be a waste of time and money because too many photos would be out of focus and my client would not be happy. They wouldn't care whether I had an aesthetically beautiful experience taking blurry photos of the bride all day. And they wouldn't care if the blurry photos of the bride were rendered beautifully.
On the other hand I picked a Leica M-A with a 35 mm Summicron on board in the local Leica store one day and I fell in love.....now then, if I was a rich man.....lol.
But I must say the build quality on the Z6ii comes close.

Atleast you are brave enough to admit you made a bad choice. Leica M is a range finder. It has no provision for doing fast shooting, sports, wildlife, fashion/editorial etc etc. It is a fully manual camera. A Leica M, like any other camera, will not make you a better or worse photographer. Photographer is in you and not the camera. This is like buying a Jaguar D Type, race along Formula 1 cars, and then complain that the car made you a worse driver cause you were always lat to the line. If you wanted a Leica to do the stuff you were interested in then the SL2 was the choice, and not M. That one has all the modern bells and whistles that you wanted. I am sure you are a good photographer in your own sphere, but then again, you made a bad choice. It is a good talking point though.
