i get chills every time i hear this. jerry loved san fran and he loved his country. the man who sang u.s. blues and ship of fools could also soulfully belt out our anthem. my takeaway is that you can be critical of our country and still love it
Agreed. And this is so misunderstood by those who don't take the time to think about it. To be against criticism (in the constructive/restorative sense of the word) is almost akin to not caring; like not wishing that it be its best version of itself. As in our interpersonal relations, thoughtful criticism of our larger community can clearly, clearly, be an expression of love.
Vinces voice really, and i mean REALLY, shone in this moment. He honestly was the most prominent voice being heard during this awesome acapella display of their talent.
I am absolutely a basket case after hearing this. In fairness, I was a basket case before hearing it, but this is absolutely tremendous. Just perfection. My favorite band ever.
I think patriotism is one of those things every generation loses. I can't imagine still having any after Iraq and Afghanistan and the Bush administration, but I don't know how my parents could have any after Vietnam, MLK's death, Nixon, and Reagan.
Both. Love and miss Jerry. Love my country. What feels special about this to me is this goes against the idea that only people who vote for a certain party are patriotic.
the entirety of America musical tradition is represented, lovingly and with pure heart, in this single beautiful rendition. god bless the good ol' Grateful Dead.
To be critical, as a musician myself- on the first harmony (broad stripes and bright stars) he should have gone down instead of up. Would have given it a nice rich sound. The rest were good
I love Dusty's big grin at the end, and I like to imagine he's pointing at Garcia as if to say, "well done Jerry". This clip is just outstanding. I also love Vince with the pitch pipe and directing Bobby and Garcia in like my old high school band teacher. Great stuff
Everything about this is so great. From the fans’ reactions to the names being announced, to the monotonous beginning of the anthem, to the beautiful harmony through the end, and the final closeup of Dusty with as big a grin as you could hope to find. Just pure bliss through the whole stadium during that performance.
Monotonous is probably not the right word to use there, but I remember the first time I heard this performance I thought “wow they’re going to sing the same key all three of them” and then just BLOWN AWAY.
A monumental day, and anthem! The Giants were on the verge of leaving the Bay Area the year before and the owners banded together and saved the team from moving to another location (possibly out of state) Then, the Boys came in and did the national anthem of the first home game of the season. Barry Bonds, in his first at bat at home as a Giant, banged out a home run, the Giants go on to win 4-3 against the new Florida Marlins. 'Twas an epic day for Giants and Dead fans alike!
LoL, this always impresses me! Be funny to hear Jerry & Bobby w/out Vince. He sorta carried the harmony, well done boys, well done! - ( not so much on the Acapella encore, think was Blackbird? Or maybe- We bid you good night?) Alpine 88'?
My favorite version of our national anthem, I love posting it on Facebook, it upsets my friends on the extreme left and right :) I'm a Liberal, but I'll be standing.
@@leshtricity There are those on the Right who don't appreciate them "dirty hippies" singing the national anthem - not just the GD, but other popular artists as well.
Nahh...he's pretty spot on. Most righties can't stand this stuff....and the ones that do like it, just ignore the message behind the band...because they still hate THAT part. They just want to "rock out and do drugs" at a concert...but not carry the good-will and charitable social justice causes that pretty much encapsulate that band's entire ethos.
Anas, it shouldn't 18 minutes, if t was that long, no-one would want to perform it because of the length of it. N' the people wouldn't like it either, because they would like the game to get started w/o any disturbances. An 18-minute national anthem would be considered problematic because of it's length
1:03 When Vince busts out that high harmony, that takes it to the next level.
Jerry then following “and the rockets red glare”…disgusting
Dude Vince absolutely killed it for this display.

The National Anthem should always be sung this way!!!!!!Good 'ol' Grateful Dead!!!
In Three-part Harmony!

Right on ✊🏽✌🏽
Oh coool!
My jaw dropped when I saw this as it happened. Tear up every time I see it.
Don’t know if it’s because I miss Jerry or my patriotism.
A big chunk of both I'd say.
✌💀👍🇺🇸❤
It's both, at least for me.
Vince was really great in this as well

I totally agree! I remember seeing this when it was sang at the time...yeh, best version I've ever heard

Jerry looks so cool in that jacket!
I agree too even though I am a Cub fan...
@@mcgannahanskyjellyfetti6854
LOL, I'm a Cubs fan too!
But Jerry was cool no matter what he was wearing.
✌💀👍⚡❤🎸🎼🎶🎵🇺🇸
I thought they were going to weave into The Eleven
All jokes aside - check out Vince with the harmonizing.

Stunning! I have to give Vince huge credit for such a beautiful job on the high range. Miss Jerry so much!

Loved Vince in The Tubes. Was happy to find this. He left us too soon...

wonderful! I never knew they were the same day, but the stick is packed
I remember Tampa had even begun selling "Tampa Bay Giants" merchandise.
These guys really nailed it, especially those harmonies. Set a very high bar!
WE MISS YOU JERRY AND VINCE!!!
I love it when Dusty points to tbem afterwards with a huge smile.as if to say "awesome job".
Best I've ever heard vince sound !
He sounded great in the Tubes.
Tremendous performance! 4/12/93 I was 5 days old.
My Lord, this harmony is incredible. It never gets old, even after at least 100 listens!
The smile on Number 12's face at the end of the anthem says it all.
Just goes straight to my heart. Perfect harmonies.
Happy 4th of July Bobby. Jerry and Vince we miss you but hear you in our hearts at every moment. Forever Grateful, Forever Family.
Vinny really held this thing together
Yo Vinnie! Happy birthday. You are missed.
It doesn't get any better than that!
Damn, the boys absolutely nailed it
God Bless them and the USA!!!
The crowd could barely let them finish before they did. They went berserk and so did I when I first heard it!
Francis Scott Key himself would have been proud
Love seeing Jerry in a Giants warm up jacket.
I'm disappointed, I thought this was going to be an 18-minute jamfest
I wish it was that
It was
😂 National Anthem -> Dark Star -> El Paso

People wanna talk about how Jerry’s voice was gone by this point. Was it the same? No! But it wasn’t as bad as some “heads” would have you believe
So, no one is going to talk about "Land of the freak, and the home of the brave"???!!!!
Best national anthem ever
Well they nailed that one.
Great!
Incredible moment 😮
Greatest national anthem performance ever!
"Land of the freaks" ....lol. 2:00
that was one of the sickest anthems i've ever heard
Vince really carried here imo
Classy!
well done!
Really dope 🔥
R.I.P. Jerry's Missing Finger
American history.
had to fix my ears after fergie
so good
Awesome!
Fantastic! This will be played by me every 4th of July henceforth, nice shout out for our Vietnam Vets in there too, never forget.....
Wait. Was that the Dead...or the Everly Brothers?
❤️❤️❤️
This is the way to do it. I hate those high falsetto style super exaggerated styles that Christina Aguilera does (and whatever is her new version)
Yah buddy's love it Soo Soo nice music brotha Men!?
Should have done us blues
That's Soo amazing from frogger Derek your brother man friend forever ♾️ Aman 🐸
Go Vince
Anybody else watching this on Jerry’s 80th birthday?
Better than Whitney Houston's lip synched version
TREASURE
firemen and brotherhood
This was how the Bay Area felt like when I grew up
It's an absolute nightmare now. I cannot believe how quickly it changed.
ufo @2:00 mark... mighty fine day for a game boys!
they should've just sung US Blues
