  • Budget cuts, a changing media landscape and upcoming negotiations,
are just some issues that are part of a slowdown in B.C.'s film industry.
As Maryse Zeidler reports, it's leaving some workers wondering where their next paycheck will come from.

I was living in Alberta and encountered a 'slow down' in projects in the Oilfields and Special Waste Treatment CenterI was working on.
    It disrupts your life.

I wish people in the film industry would still have work but with Discovery buying WB led to the cancelling of many wasteful and dead if not dying franchises. Its about the number of productions in the end. Productions need to have good writing a good showrunners that understand streaming and bingeing to increase success in BC. They also have to understand that shows have their natural ends.

Work is booming in Ottawa right now, which is a nice change. I worked as a set dresser for a few years and gave up trying to make it work and left back in the fall. That's the number 1 reason why I left, the work just isn't consistent enough, especially if you have a family and a mortgage...some of the best years of my life, but I was unemployed more than I was working.

Been in the industry since 2013, IATSE 891 member and all the shimmy. Left during the pandemic, got into healthcare went back got school got good benefits and never looked back. it sucks for all we pay in dues, getting membership and taxes there's still NO stable benefits. And if you break it down after gross and all the time you're off, you make as much as as an average 60-70k worker who works full time except they sleep more. I miss crafty and on the on set location with cool action but i def dont miss the decorators/ designer or nepo baby who dresses like yoko ono (why do they all wear large off white canvas shirts that are wrinkled and smell like moth and prosecco) wearing a crystal quartz neckalce or turquoise they got while roasting their chest like red peppers in mexico and walk into set and move ONE chachke with a hand while holding their lactose, gluten and sugar free artigiano in the other thinking they just pulled king arthurs sword out of the stone. The industry has gone downhill and with more AI being pushed in, WB cutbacks, its only gonna get worse. Good Riddance!

Miss that "Golden Age" of TV syndication (late 80s-early 2000s), when there were tons of non-network action and sci-fi shows on the air, and I swear all of them were shot in Vancouver!!! (Well, there were a few out of Toronto and Montreal, but...) I'm sure more work will return to BC, with all that content coming down the streaming pipeline! ❤ from 🇺🇸 !!!

The worst part is that both IATSE and TEAMSTER 155 keep hiring new employees informing them of more incoming productions when they have been steadily decreasing. Every couple of months they hire a bunch of new employees with the majority leaving after a few short months due to lack of work. They purposely do this so they can line their pockets with their monthly hall fees and control the number of employees becoming full-time members. They are merely reaping what they have sown.

Yah I worked many year's for Iatse in Toronto as a driver the works not consistent enough so I went to the city instead that work should be treated as a good part time gig the problem is when people try to make it full time

But if your just a permit I don't think you have to pay fess

    • @movieguy1985
      @movieguy1985 ปีที่แล้ว

Yup. Two years ago I was paying $65 per quarter then I was paying $100 per quarter and I only worked maybe 2 union shows a year. I finished up a job in North Bay in the fall and decided I wanted out. That's pretty much the situation in Ottawa right now...they just keep taking on more and more people with a promise of work and then they never get to work...yet still paying dues. Majority of the people working in Ottawa don't have alot of onset experience, and in North Bay half my art team had never worked on a movie before...

So weird, considering all the amazing diversity and the industry is still a bust. It's almost like the film industry was created and maintained by a majority white production crew.

    was Schindler’s List.

Well, 30 years later, theaters are not the same. More space between rows. Premium seats are available if you want to splurge. The experience is totally different as well: Atmos sound and digital picture in 4K or 8K. Oh, and last few times I've been, theaters are cleaned between viewings.

No parking , just relaxing in my pajamas as soon as I get home. Millions of DVDS still to watch. Classics to cartoons!
      Bring a snack for sharing.

Nobody is staying cooped up . Not wasting time driving somewhere to watch a movie, unless it’s a summer night and Dusk to Dawn, all four Planet of the Apes is showing at the Drive-In.
Tailgating with the BBQ and playing on the swings until the Previews start.

IATSE 891 member here: More AI is being pushed in, WB cutbacks and the way future streaming is changing is causing an inevitable major shift. Your renters have some what savings , ei, bank of mom and dad and probably a sugar baby fund that keeping them afloat. Welcome to Film!!
