Danos were never made out of plastic. They were always made out of masonite. Airlines were made out of plastic/fiberglass.
Danos prove that all of the nonsense around electric guitar myths are just that, myths. Dano’s play great sound great, and last pretty much forever.

That assessment is totally wrong. I love old danos, I have 3. But they sound nothing like a chambered, hollow or solid body guitar. The wood does make a difference. Now does it make a difference between different species of timber, when played without the amp, yes. With an amp, you cannot tell

@@ifax1245 Well, MDF is glofiried cardboard (resin added), but maybe this guitar is Masonite indeed (IDK), which is good unless the guitar is used e.g. as a paddle.

Instead of MDF or cardboard. The top and back are hardboard, what we in the colonies call Masonite. The body frame is poplar. That’s how Danelectros have been made from the start. The front and back were covered with vinyl contact paper, which is probably what those photos are. As for the pronunciation of basswood, either is correct, although pronouncing the bass syllable like the fish rather than the musical instrument is more prevalent here and the other way there.

Danelectro guitars have never been made out of plastic. They're made from Masonite, which is a branded form of composite made from compressed wood fibres and is commonly known as HDF. MDF is a similar product but it's less dense.
You may have been thinking of other guitars of the era that came from Italian manufacturers, where plastics and fibreglass were used commonly. I believe that Airline had guitars using that material made by other manufacturers, so that may also be where you're getting the plastic ideas from as danelectro also made guitars for them under contract however those were just regular danelectro guitars with a different badge on them.

Jimmy Page wrote, recorded & performed one of the greatest guitar songs of all time "Kashmir" on a Danelectro, thereby cementing the absolute awesomeness of cardboard guitars in perpetuity. Nothing sounds as unique as a Dano, I love them. Epic little things and they play properly fantastic, especially for slide.

Danelectro guitars were originally made with Masonite fronts and backs with cheap wood sides covered with a sticky backed plasticized paper similar to shelf paper. I could be wrong, but I have never seen or heard of a plastic-bodied Danelectro guitar. National/Supro built fiberglass-bodied guitars, both for themselves and for other retailers with customized branding (as in Airline).

I have a Danelectro Vintage 12 string, and yes it's made out of masonite, but it has an excellent bridge, intonation is perfect, and holds tune. It is made in Korea and says that it has '56 vintage lipstick pickups. I heard someone playing one at a Long and McQuade store, and thought they were playing a 12 string Rickenbacker. It's really close. I've had it for 6 years and couldn't be happier with it. I agree about the misinformation in this video.

PRO TIP for Josh... If you are worried about springs or small parts shooting out of something you are working on put the item in a plastic zip lock / freezer bag so you can see what you are doing but tiny jumpy outtie parts cant shoot all over the place or get lost. Also when putting any screw in always turn it backwards until it clicks as it falls down into the first thread. you will NEVER cross thread another screw again.

I hope to better woodwork than this. I want it so sound like a Dany in single coil mode than kick into heavy metal overdrive in H mode. This breakdown was very helpful on what to do and not to do! Like yes to those pickup mounts and no to that body wood and neck pocket. And no to that bridge!

I have a couple of basswood bodies and they actually sound better than my mahogany ones, just a better resonance and plenty of sustain. The only con is, like you mentioned, how soft it is. When sanding you can easily take off 5mm in a few seconds. Gotta be extremely careful. They'll also ding like crazy with every bump or graze.

I was expecting to have to do a bit of fettling on it for him, but good grief, what an instrument it is! Beautifully made and finished, great set up, slim satin neck (à la Fender Jazz!) silky smooth, polished fretwires and almost mirror surface, bound fretboard with block inlays and rolled edges!
One of the nicest guitars I’ve had my hands on! I would be SO interested in your thoughts, as I expect, would many others!!!

I started hand-carving my own guitars, just because I got tired of seeing so many people copy Tele or Strat or Les bodies.
Then, I got a small cordless router. It helped immensely. Then, a bigger plug-in hand router. (I should carve one for the Crimson gang, just because they've been so inspiring to a billion of us and they give us fun videos.)
The coolest thing about Dannies? They are their own animal. Originality is underrated. They sound pretty good on stage, too, especially for friends who needed something lightweight.
Engineering and pickups can do a lot... but there is a magic to real wood. A life. A feel. A sound, too.
Guitars are a tactile art, as well as visual and audible, and the obsession can be overwhelming. Enjoy every minute... because someone who could have made an impact on others didn't stop to enjoy the process... and gave up too soon.

I don’t know where else to leave the comment, so I will leave it here.
    Just some feedback
The reason I originally subscribed to Crimson Guitars was to watch Ben deal with various challenges in “Luthiership” as he attempted all those wild builds and also his passion for old tools (love old tools)

Danelectro proves that if you want 'cheap' sounds to sound 'cool' through a decent Rig, its actually possible, if it doesn't last, buy another - disposable guitars.....
Money doesn't always just mean 'better' sounds, it means better quality materials, beyond that, its better quality control, beyond that its long term guarantees and durability. beyond that its customer service, etc - every thing adds to the cost and manpower behind every stage of production so that raises the 'cost' to consumer. If you want 'cheaper', you have to sacrifice 'something' somewhere to lose out - usually the retailer in 'sales' on their profit margin, but the company sold them to the retailer to sell in the first place at the price per unit they want/need to Grow, and still be Competitively priced.

The guitarist from Wet Leg uses a U2, Dave Grohl was seen playing a Silvertone branded guitar that was just a Danelectro with a different badge recently. Jimi Page, Jimi Hendrix and...err....me... These aren't supposed to be Les Pauls or Strats, they were cheap catalogue guitars. They sound different to anything else, they look cool and they don't fall apart either. Mine's a re-issue from the 90s and is in perfect working order even though it hasn't been particularly looked after. A little research and Josh would have found out that these Danelctro originally used aluminium rods in the neck as they considered truss rods to be a "temporary solution". I'd also have been interested to know the output of these pickups as the originals were very low output and made a big difference to the sound. Anyway, once a decade, we sell one f the kids and have a snob tea. can't wait to tuck into that swan later

Dano never used plastic, they use moisenite, which is what clipboards are made out of. And they do that because that’s what they were in the 50’s, can’t call it a 59 if they suddenly change the entire recipe. They’ve always been made weird and cheap but the sound and play is way more than the sun of their parts. If anyone hasn’t had a Dano before they’re missing out.

They are just cheap guitars made out of fake wood with noisy pickups but they had a sort of cheap sound that was good for blues rhythms and stuff and of course Jimmy Page played one on Kashmir and other Zeppelin stuff but I don't see the point in buying a remake since the old ones are available. I mean better to get a real guitar and getting the old pickups out of an original one and making a hybrid.

The industry keeps moving, they want to keep their market knowledge uptodate. They couldn't fund that knowledge and research by simply buying dozens of guitars. Everyone with an interest in guitar building should know it’s all BS by now, it’s been proven enough times. Build a guitar out of stable materials and put good sounding pickups in (not expensive, because there’s as much crap talked about pickups as there is tonewood!) and you’ll have a good sounding instrument.
