Hi Mike, only recently started watching your channel, had a bit of a binge watch this evening, 7 I think love the content and quality and your laid back style , great videos and technical information, I'm of a similar age but love learning new stuff, thanks, Derek
Great video as usual, Mike. Minsmere absolutely epic place, fair old drive from the Midlands though isn't it (I'm in Shropshire). I got my first ever Dartford Warbler sightings (and one picture) only last year at the neighbouring Dunwich Heath
Painstaking work Mike Procapture certainly helps and 50 frames per second but still hard to do ! I still hope Sony will update the A1 with Procapture. Awesome demo thanks Mike. 👍
Really like your videos. Very useful. For this situation I prefer manual focus and SH1. As mentioned you won't get many frames with anything useful, but with SH1 you double the chances of getting the type of shot you want. Can't see any advantage of AF since the bird in the focus plane for the split second you're capturing action. I'd also use a tripod and the remote if that were possible. Just makes things easier.
give the dot sight a try ive had good luck with one even an the em1x although keeper rate was terrible if the om1 af is meant to be that good i cant see there being a problem good luck for next time
Hi Mike excellent video as usual. I have just spent some time with stonechats and for the first time used procap sh2 with bird detect. I had some good results but it did not seem to track the bird across the frame as in your video. Mostly only getting the take off and one or two frames sharp. I was using small area frame to lock onto the bird first , would it be better to use all points. My shutter speeds were 3200 -8000sec. They were taking off parallel to me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
The focus points will not make any difference. It will use all focus points with bird detection on, once it has found a bird. Using a small area can help if you have two birds in the picture and want to tell it which one to focus on, but after that it uses all focus points. I had a high failure rate, but that was because the birds was flying in the wrong direction. You are on the edge of what is possible so can't expect to get it right all the time.
Love your videos Mike. They are very helpful 👍🏼😊 Considering switching from Nikon to Olympus OM-1. Question: Will the Pro Capture work with a wireless radio-shutter-release?
To use procapture you need to be able to half depress and fully depress the shutter release button so the quetsion is does the wireless radio device support this. I think it very unlikely, but maybe out there somewhere there is such a device. It works with a wired remote control.
@@MikeLaneFRPS Thanx Mike 👍🏼 If i get the OM-1, your channel is where i will learn from. You explain things better than the others. Greetings from Northern Norway 😊
Good video, thanks for that. I also have the OM1 and 150-400 lens. What is your experience with using image stabilization and which one do you use, if any?
Great tutorial. I am struggling a bit with my setup, as having Olympus 100-400 I am capped at 20fps. This quite a lot, but for capturing critical moment with small bird it is too slow. I hope they will fix this if they ever release mark II of that lens. Also I was wondering howmu current setup would work with SH1 and pumping focus. This 150-400mm is great lens but it is prohibitively expensive and 300mm pro is not that flexible.
@@MikeLaneFRPS thanks Mike, guess I need to practice what works best for me. I'm used to back button so a bit of trial and error for a bit. Practice on the garden Robins at the weekend. Keep up the good work, I really enjoy your films
Great video Mike. Very enjoyable. Just to clarify that you have set your camera in bird detect with pro capture. Is that correct? I have not used this facility on my OM1 yet but after your video I am going to give it a try.
Great video and photos again Mike. I am struggling to get decent results on my om1 with procapture sh2. Many photos are out of focus and I am wondering if it's due to me using the pl 200mm f2.8 and pl 100-400 and not OM/olympus glass? Af sensitivity is +1 most of the time and af area wide depending on the composition. By all accounts this should still work even though sh2 is capped at 25 fps. Any thoughts? Thanks muchly.
Always hard to answer questions about focus and sharpness. If you are happy with the AF capabilities without procapture then with procpature makes no difference. With bird detection I find AF sensitivity makes no difference. Hard to prove, but I have tried hard to test it. Even with all the wonderful technology we have it still needs an input from the photographer. I have just had two morning sessions using procapture on small flying birds. Maybe 8000 pictures in total. If I get 10 good ones from that I will be happy. All the failures were down to the bird not doing what I wanted or the photographer not making the right decisions. The technology did its job fine.
Craight, another thing to consider it to check where the focus is at after you shoot. Possible reason is that the focus could land at the front of your subject or behind your subject. Also please check the distance AF range on your lens. Another approach is to calculate the distance from your camera to your object, you can use PreMF, the press Info button to focus automatically or manually then you will see the distance such 7.8 meter. Once you know the distance, there is a feature called AFLimiter. There are 3 presets of AFLimiter. You can customised this by setting the range for example 7.8 - 8.2 meter. And before you shoot make sure AFLimiter is set to ON. You can set this AFLimiter to the custom button as well. So the goal of this is to limit your C-AF (tracking if you set so) just to withing the range that you set. Therefore, you will get bigger chance of success of nailing the shot in focus.
"Let's just stop at 30 for now". That was really noice choice there.
Brilliant images again Mike.
Thanks

Great results Mike, you got some fantastic photos ! 👏👍😀
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent
Another excellent unhurried video - easy to follow your settings - thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent explanation of the OM Pro Capture set up. Minsmere is a lovely site, such a variety. Thank you.
Very welcome!
You’re a very patient man. Thanks for the very thorough discussion
If you saw me in a dentists waiting room or supermarket queue you would not call me patient!
Excellent video Mike. The clearest explanation of ProCap that I have seen.
I never want a camera without it.
good start to Saturday as usual.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great explanation of procapture settings Mike.
Glad it was helpful!
Love the shots of the Short-eared Owl. That would have been exciting to see. Interesting to understand how you set the camera up.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great photos as always and thanks for the help on your settings for the OM-1
Happy to help!
Thanks, Mike you reminded me to change my setting, been meaning to do that, Thanks for sharing. 👍
Glad to help
Thank you for sharing the Pro-capture setting. 👍👍
My pleasure!
As usual Mike perfect details and well explained always a pleasure to view your excellent videos
Glad you like them!
Thanks Mike, I will try again with pro capture now I understand it more
Glad it helped
If I had of know you were down there I would have bought you a pint. :-)

Yes long drive. Too far for the day.

If not surely it will be on the next Sony model.

Mike, they make the EE-1 to solve the issue you had .
I have a TH-cam review on one. Would not help with this subject. You need faster arms.
Beautiful pictures Mike. Do you switch off the IBIS in the lens at high shutter speeds? Have you noticed any difference if it is on or off? Thanks
I never switch it off and when I have tried testing it (hard to test) I can see no difference.

I only use SH1 procapture occassionally. C-Af is too useful.
Nice film Mike but I do have one question, do you use back button focus in conjunction with pro capture? Feels a little fiddly to me
No I do not use back button focus. Whenever I try it I quickly give up. Does not suit my hands.

I need to experiment with the "pre-burst" mode of my g9, which seems similar to your procapture mode but not as good.
It is similar, but I found more difficult to use.

Yes. Usually SH2 procapture with bird detection

Hi Mike can I ask your opinion on teleconverters and if you think they degrade photo quality?
Yes they do degrade the image but I use the 1.4x readily. The 2x on the 150-400 degrades too much and I avoid it.
