But the 5th term can’t be negative since the sequence was progressing

Please, why can't we limit the answer to a positive figure by converting the positive 9 to index form (9 = 3^2) ? In this case, we could equate r to 3 since they would have the same indices or power. Thank you.

It's because (-3)^2=9.
So you have both as feasible solutions
