      At first though even Mondon waved his hands saying "No. Don't..." but then Chris literally did it anyways a second later and so once Mondon jumped, turned, and started sprinting after him, the others reacted quickly so they could cover him too.

      @@whatdeheck5822 It wasn't about the sprint,. If we wanna look at this from an exceptional standpoint, that would be at the bottom of my list.
      The greatness of this play comes from the slyness and knowing vey niche football rules and being able to exploit them. The ball was blocked, but still left the line of scrimmage, which makes the ball still in play. Notice how he looks around before picking it up, making sure that no opposing team members are near, as it would give worse field position for Georgia's offense if he picked it up and then immediately tackled. or if LSU tries to take it from him after he touches it. He exploited the rules and other team's ignorance perfectly, which is why this is very rare and very high football IQ play. .

      It's the opposite problem, Coaches today focus too much on the nuances of the rules.
      With this play the NCAA expects coaches to teach players NCAA Rule 6, Article 5 as well as the 4 exceptions to rule Rule 6, Article 5 and base their decision on the understanding of the common interpretation of Rule 6, Article 5 and the 4 exceptions to rule Rule 6, Article 5.
      The old way of coaching focused on Fundamentals: Play to the whistle. The ball's not dead unless it's called dead. Doesn't matter if it's a kick off, afield kick, an end of drive punt, an extra point. Until the ref blows the whistle you recover the football.
      Teach the players the fundamentals and let the coaches and ref's argue the rules.

    This video reminded me of a weird sequence of events at the end of a high school football state championship game a few years ago. The offensive team trailed by only 3 points and attempted a last-play FG to force overtime. The defense blocked it and rushed the field in celebration, not knowing that the play hadn't been called dead yet, and were penalized for illegal participation. This gave the trailing team another chance at the tying FG. On the second attempt, the kick was good, but the offense was flagged for a false start. This nullified the FG and pushed them back 5 yards but, being a dead-ball infraction, still left them one more chance to tie the game. On the third attempt, the defense blocked their kick AGAIN. This time, they were smart enough to not rush the field until after the officials called the play dead. Only after the play was blown dead did the winning team finally rush the field to celebrate their new state title. As I said, it was a weird finish.

Plymouth blocked the field goal and all ran off to the sideline celebrating their win. Meanwhile not a single whistle was blown so Glenn coaches started screaming at the holder who picked up the blocked kick to run! Since Plymouth was celebrating the holder was able to walk into the endzone for a game winning TD! Still to this day the craziest finish I’ve seen! Everyone saying good coaching and all that. Everyone also fails to notice that even Georgias own teammates were telling him to not touch it. The PLAYER is the one that made the call and realized the rules, not even his own teammates knew or the coaching staff until after he ran with it. In all the only person at this play that knew what was going on was only the player himself and not LSU or Georgia, kinda like one of those dumb luck moments. That is all I chalk this up to.

    • @Namath1000
      @Namath1000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      INITIALLY, not touching it is the correct move. If the receiving team does NOT touch it, the receiving team would get the ball at the line of scrimmage. If he touches it, the receiving team gets the ball where the play ends. And if he touches it and muffs it, it's live for the offensive/kicking team to recover and keep. Picking it up only becomes the correct play, when it's noticed that LSU is not paying attention and he can advance it beyond the original line of scrimmage.

    • @hagamapama
      @hagamapama ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Namath1000 Yep, that's what the heads up look around was about before he picked up the ball. He sees a potential golden opportunity and knows that the coaching staff isn't in a position to see it so he calls his own shot. That is very good coaching because it's coaching a guy to be alert, think for himself, and others to back him up if he's taking his shot and it looks like a good one.
      Instead of teaching them to follow the coach's plans, this kid was clearly able to operate independently, know the rules and be able to snatch a golden opportunity when it was right there for him. That's going to win you more football games than being an iron disciplinarian will.

I was a football official for 12 years, mostly as a Back Judge. Once the ball comes to rest, once it stops, we generally blow the ball dead (because the clock is running. You want to stop the clock.) Had no one been near the ball the officials here would have blown it dead. My point: 29 could not have just been milling around, pretending he didn't know, to fool LSU. He had to demonstrate that he was about the pick up a live ball. That was the truly smart thing for me, watching this.

    Really smart by Smith to know that the ball was still live but let the situation turn to his advantage even more by waiting to pick up the ball.

    You have to give credit to that player for his awareness and football IQ. He checked to see if the play was still live and took advantage of the other distracted players.
    This was a play that will be in the history books.
