Its funny to see the Penn st coach tackling his own player after that great of a game performance by them.
What's funny is that was a better tackle than any that wasnt from Parsons.
Franklin is a highly emotional coach, but MAN was he pumped up there! Don't blame him, this was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Instead, Penn State beat Michigan, won 11 games and notched this Cotton Bowl victory. Remarkable!

Although the Penn State defense bent, they didn't break very often, and holding Memphis to all those FGs was the difference.

When you have to face an offense as high powered as Memphis, that's often the strategy you have to use. Otherwise, they will EXHAUST your defense trying to lock them down. To be honest, you can slow the Hurry Up offense down, but you can't really FULLY stop it.

I am from Memphis and sort of figured about this score. Memphis has a good offense but not much of a defense. I sort of figured Penn State would kill Memphis, but Memphis kept up for awhile.
Memphis has really stepped up the last few years and its really amazing. Has had two excellent coaches come and go and hopefully the team will become sort of a training ground for hungry and smart young coaches to come in the future.
12-2 and be in the Cotton Bowl is really amazing, and Memphis played well considering the stronger opponent.
Penn State fan here, Memphis played an impressive game. You were the only team all year to score more than 31 points on us (and Minnesota was the only other one to score more than 28 on us), to put up that many on such a defense is an impressive feat. Also, I think this game showed why the AAC used to be a BCS conference when it was the Big East, they can play with anybody including the Alabama and Clemson type teams.

I’m proud to say I know a lot more about football than the average TH-cam user haha. Memphis kicker was good but punting could use a little practice (I wasn’t paying attention if it was the same person) compared to penn states blake gillikin who’s insane at punting
Fun game! Memphis fans should be proud of their offense this season. It certainly showed today. My Nittany Lions had their hands full for most of the game, but I'm proud of the offense for their will to pound the rock and the defense for doing enough to limit an explosive Memphis team to mostly field goals. Perfect performance? No, not at all, but enough for today and a good note to finish the season on. I know many PSU fans were hoping for the Rose Bowl, but this was a nice win in a great bowl over a respectable opponent. I'm thankful for that and looking forward to Firemoose and company trucking more defenders next year. WE ARE!
we shot ourselves in the foot on offense buddy...and gave you guys two opportunities at very short fields...the INTS were also bad decisions and not great plays by Penn...we could have easily made this a different ending but we beat ourselves...

Funny thing about that argument is it works both ways: Maybe PSU shot itself in the foot on defense by allowing so so many wide open receivers downfield--those 479 pass yards were a gift, not good plays by Memphis, so the different ending should've been 4 or 5 scores lead instead of 2. Of course in reality both teams made big mistakes and big plays alike. I didn't see any of those kids yesterday trying to give anything away. With near 400 yards on the ground mostly between the tackles, PSU offense didn't need many short fields to score points, and the D while porous through the air as has been the case most of the season, did enough to force 6 kicks on 4th downs and yes took the ball away a few times and even scored once because of a huge play by Parsons. Give credit where due. By the way, Penn is an FCS school in Philly who didn't play yesterday.

I'm not sure Memphis scores 39 points if Penn State's defense recovers the two fumbles they forced, and although they got a pick at the end of the game, there were four other picks they should've had.

Man this was a great game! Had me on edge until the last pick near the end-zone. Total props to Memphis - came out to play and left it on the field. Lots of potential for both teams next season.

I knew this game would be a tough one, AAC used to be the Big East, a conference full of teams that would often pull big surprises in major bowl games. Everyone was talking about Memphis like they were Buffalo or Troy but AAC teams remind everyone so often why the Big East was a BCS conference. As a Penn State fan, I felt good about this two-touchdown win.

If Memphis had a good to decent defense, they could have beat Penn State. Memphis is an elite offensive program and scored 39 on Penn state they just couldnt stop the over powered penn state offense

This is why very few people pay you any mind...stop the damn hate. If PSU's secondary was better it's a whole new ball game and it will get better with the larger CB's and Safeties being recruited by Franklin. I f you want to play the "if" game, if PSU's secondary plays 20% better then the game isn't as a close...how's that for "if's"...
Ok I will admit it. I as dismissing Memphis, but after that performance I have to say bravo to the kids. They played their rear ends off. But like I have posted many times PSU has way too much talent for them to lose. And finally Franklin got it thru this head to run the damn ball, something he didn't do enough with Minnesota or OSU (especially before Clifford left the game). PSU is LOADED at RB and that OL is build to run the ball not pass protect (you saw how Memphis was getting to Clifford often?). If the new OC sticks to this formula next year PSU will be contending book it. Still congrats to Memphis if their QB stays they will once again be a very good team.

@@MetaVita You can very well say that a couple of offensive plays determined whether or not Memphis sticks around or it (the game) gets out of hand early in the 2nd Qtr. It's easy to say that two plays determined a whole game when your supposition is that Memphis (regardless of these two plays) has the ability to play with PSU head up.

To be real, what Memphis need for next year is a Defensive Coordinator who's an expert in nickel-based defenses, primarily the classic 4-2-5, the 3-3-5(which Memphis innovated under Joe Lee Dunn), and the relatively recent 1-5-5.
Other than that, Memphis had a great season.
UPDATE: Well, looks like there's a high chance Memphis will run a 3-4 defense this upcoming season, because they've hired Mike McIntyre as their new Defensive Coordinator.
The play when Parsons blew up the reverse was a great display of recognition and athleticism. He will be making plays like that all year.
2022 now. PSU is being whispered as a possible Cotton Bowl team for 2022, so I ended up back here to watch these old highlights.
Memphis is good. Hopeful it can schedule ole miss, msu, auburn, and bama and win those games.
I'm glad the offense shut things down but there were 20 missed tackles in this highlight. 8 in the 1st, 3 in the 2nd, 6 in the 3rd, 3 in the 4th. Our defense will be #1 if we can fix missed tackles.
And our pass defense. Almost 500 passing yards today... doesn't look good.

I’m a die hard Penn State fan and I was at this game. Micah Parsons excelled heavily in this game but I have to give it to Memphis for playing their hearts out. This was a historic season for their program without question

Another good NY6 win for my Nittany Lions, but there are some obvious areas where they need to improve. The passing game has to get better. Some of it is the receivers dropping catchable balls, some of it is Clifford’s inconsistency. Hopefully the new OC from Minnesota should remedy that after sending Corey Davis to the NFL from Western Michigan and developing Rashod Bateman, Tyler Johnson, and Tanner Morgan at Minnesota. The secondary has to play better. I think some of that can be scheme related because Pry is very aggressive with his blitzes. However, that doesn’t excuse all the missed open field tackles. If we improve in those areas, then watch out next year. Penn State still got to 11 wins this year even with those flaws.
If Penn St is to win the B1G they need to get better DBs after that it’s simply getting Clifford more comfortable with his WRs

Judging from their performance and celebration post game, Penn State was DEFINITELY motivated. Memphis put together a furious upset bid that almost won.
I have a bridge to sell you if you think that we got up for this game like we do games against a top B1G opponent or other top Power 5 opponent. Did they want to win? Sure. Did they take it more lightly than they should have? Probably. They ultimately realized that Memphis came to play and that they are good...but don't think for one second that these guys were as hyped about this game as the Ohio State, Michigan, Iowa, Michigan State, Wisconsin games! It doesn't take away anything from Memphis's efforts or talents, but let'skeep it real.

@@derricklanders7260 I would say in the first half of the game you are probably right but in the 2nd half they knew they were in a dogfight and better step up. As a PSU fan this was very encouraging to see because last year in the Citrus bowl they didn't. I think they also realized what an opportunity they blew loosing to Minnesota, because most likely they would have been in the playoffs.

@@patricksweeney7570 Memphis gave up 53 points! Like I said before... the AAC plays no defense. Their defense got mauled. If a defense cant stop the run it's really really hard to win a football game, and Memphis had absolutely no answer for Penn States running game.
I was rooting for Memphis too, but their offense could only do so much. Penn state averaged 7.5 yards per carry! You arent going to win a game against a quality Big 10 opponent playing defense like that.

@@patricksweeney7570 Yes I do. I watch lots of CFB. Their have been lots of G5's that have won NY6/BCS games over P5 schools that have higher rated recruits/more talent. Utah, TCU, Boise State, Houston, UCF all won NY6/BCS game over P5s. The difference between them and Memphis is that they actually had good defenses. And yes I know Houston and UCF are AAC schools, but they had decent defenses. The AAC was poor defensively in 2019 and Memphis defense was exposed in their Bowl Game.
