  • A couple of viewers had asked about replacement seal strips for heat sealers. I bought a set from Amazon and I try one out for fit and function on my sister's heat sealer.

Before buying a freeze dryer, perhaps research to find out more about the downside of the machine; some people have problems with their machine and it's big and heavy and hard to return!
When trying to decide what to freeze dry you can start by asking why.
Start by asking yourself this question. Why are you freeze drying food? Knowing this should help you decide what you should freeze dry first.
    I'm freeze drying because:
    Just to freeze dry leftovers?
You want to make your own food for camping/backpacking?
    For if/when the SHTF?
    For a short term emergency?
You have your own garden and want to freeze dry the food?
You love Costco but don't have a family of 6?
You are good at finding the food sales but only have 1 freezer?
When you cook homemade chili just for yourself you make 10 gallons? Because you have 3 full freezers and are worried about power outages?
If I knew then what I know now, I would have freeze dried things in a different order. Or maybe not, because I started freeze drying because we had 3 full freezers, I was thinking of getting another one, and I decided I should buy a walk-in freezer instead. I started looking into walk-ins and realized they were expensive to buy (even used ones) AND expensive to own and operate. Then I found out Harvest Right was making home sized freeze dryers. One of my first thoughts was "I like Mountain House!" I have used their food for backpacking almost 45 years and we even kept some in our travel trailer, for just in case.
Freeze dried food will stay fresh for many years and be ready and waiting when you need it.
We do videos showing how we are using our Harvest Right Freeze Dryer to freeze dry food for long term storage. (We have the medium size machine that we got in August of 2017) We talk about how to load and unload the freeze dryer, how to know if the food is dry, is it better to freeze dry raw food or cooked food, and do a few taste tests. Freeze dried food is also great for prepping or just for camping and snacking!

I should have mentioned that the heat strips will last for thousands of bag and I've never had one just suddenly fail. It's always given me plenty of warning in the way of a hot spot on the strip. Here is a playlist of all my heat sealer videos th-cam.com/video/oDnaGpdMZuw/w-d-xo.html

I had the same problem with my sealer. Harvest Right promptly replaced it! I was very happy with their response. Good to see how to replace the element for the future.

That's good to hear, and with normal use it should be years before the heat strip needs to be replaced.

Thank you for the video Ken! Well, as you know, I just received my brand new nonworking Harvest Right medium unit, and finally repaired all of the issues that needed to be addressed to get the unit to function. One of which was to repair the sealer so that she sealed, by purchasing what looks like the same 5mm strips from Amazon.
My sealer arrived with the 8mm strips and would not seal at all, it would just heat the mylar. Now she works, and I can seal to my hearts content. Same with the settings, around 6.5 to 7 seals the bag. Thanks again for the videos, I would have never known of this simple fix if not for your work.

      I glad it worked out.
On the other hand, testing the sealers before shipping probably would have been a good idea! I heard that many, many people have had sealer failures to seal. (Maybe the transformer?)

@@SchoolReportsI read the transformer post from the other gentleman, my thinking too of his findings are correct, which I believe to be true. None the less, I ordered a new Impak sealer direct from Impak.

@@eileenniehaus5368 It seems like they are out of stock most of the time. I've been wanting to get some to try on for size, in case people asked, but they were unavailable until recently. I already had 4 spares that came with my sealers. Now I have 10, so I was pretty much set for life anyway. The strips should last for thousands of bag. (5,000, maybe 10,000+ bags?) I replace mine when it starts to develop a hot spot, but I've never had one fail completely.

I got a replacement unit after my black cover broke. The new one had a much thicker black cover (similar to the one in your video) and had no blue plastic on the chrome pieces. Both my first one and the replacement have 8mm strips. The replacement does not get very hot at all compared to my first one. Since they both use the same strips this tells me something else is different. Maybe a different pot? I hope to do some more testing since I have flavor A and flavor B to compare.

    • @SchoolReports
      @SchoolReports  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I haven't tested for it yet, but I assume it the transformer. I think it's the wrong one.

      @@SchoolReports My Sunday afternoon project.
      Harvest Right Impulse Sealer Comparison
After the black connection cover failed on my impulse sealer delivered DEC2022 Harvest Right sent a replacement. I immediately noticed the new sealer would not seal my heaviest bags, even on the highest setting. I’ve heard this same complaint from others. This caused me to investigate further. These are my findings. For this report the older sealer will be A and the replacement is B.
      1. Both sealers have an 8mm wide heating strip.
      2. The labels are on opposite sides. A has the Harvest Right Logo on the front (handle on the right) B has it on the rear (same side as the cord).
      3. B had no protective blue plastic on the chrome strips.
      4. B has a much thicker heat strip connection cover. This is what broke on my unit.
      5. The heating element spring tension on A is much higher than B.
      6. On both units, only the heating time varies with the setting.
      7. The input power on B was lower, but not enough to be significant.
Over 6 tests 3 sec ON - 30 sec. OFF:
      A was 805, 763, 762, 792, 787, 790 watts. B was 770, 793, 777, 782, 787, 762 watts.
Over 6 tests 3 sec On - 10 sec OFF
      A was 771, 774, 772, 768, 771, 762 watts. B was 750, 740, 723, 713, 717, 702 watts.
      8. There is a noticeable difference in sound when. A has a lower pitch, more on this later.
      9. B took a much higher setting to seal the same bag weight as tested with strip “pull apart” comparisons. A bag that sealed at 4 on A required 5.5 on B. A bag that sealed at 4.5 on A required 7 on B. A bag that sealed at 7 on A didn’t seal on B at the highest setting.
      10. The voltage measured across the heating element was 13.6Vac on A compared to 11.1Vac on B.
      11. The open circuit no load voltage at the heating element was 22.8Vac on A compared to 31.8 on B.
      12. B transformer is significantly smaller. This explains a lot. Neither are marked. A is 54.5mm thick, B is 46mm. A is 18.5% larger than B. The width and length are the same. A is so large that the bottom cover doesn’t fit properly bulging down in the center.
The build quality on both is very poor. Bent castings, brackets and covers. The ground ring terminal is on an unsupported slotted hole using a screw that can’t be tightened. To prevent rocking, the feet get tightened or loosened.
I believe the current on B is being limited to the point of limiting the performance by over saturating the smaller transformer. Notice the large voltage drop from the no load voltage. It happens on A but not to the same extend because of the larger transformer capacity.

@@BowWowPewPewCQ Thanks so much for doing the testing, and especially for sharing all the data! I love the details, makes it so much easier for me to "see" it.
If you're going to put your brand on something, you usually want to make sure the product is good. (Or at least functional)
Inspired by your data, I just went down and did a bit of quick checking of my Impak brand sealer. The average of the open circuit was 21.5Vac and when measured across the heating element it was 14.9Vac
I assume you've seen my video showing some of the differences between my Impak brand sealer and my sister's Harvest Right branded one: New Sealer vs Old Sealer (or Sealer Failure to Function) th-cam.com/video/oDnaGpdMZuw/w-d-xo.html

@@SchoolReports Yes, I have always been detail oriented. The devil is in the details.
      I have watched that video.
I notice the Voltage delta difference on your Impak is the smallest of the 3. This tells me the transformer is sized better. Also the Impak has the highest operating voltage. It's not hard to see which is the best performer.
HR has been disappointing with their build quality a number of times. It appears the newer the model the worse it is.

Well, that would would have been a good bit of information for me to have mentioned!
Under normal use they will last for thousands of bags. I'd guess (because I didn't track it - Shame) 5000 bag give or take a couple thousand. I look at replacing mine when it starts to develop a hot spot; I've never had one fail completely.
