VOTE FOR THE NEXT YU YU HAKUSHO VIDEO HERE: strawpoll.com/s2e8w8e4o A. A longer, in-depth video similar to the Dark Tournament video (will take longer to make) B. A shorter, more focused video (will leave out a LOT of plot points)
The manga is so fascinating to me, because I was expecting him to be as stubburn about not killing as he is in the anime, but he's not. No one forces him to take a life in the manga, HE CHOOSES TO. Because of his talks with Wolfwood and Wolfwood's death after chosing Vash's morals over his own, Vash chooses Wolfwood's over his own just once, and then realizes how horrible Wolfwood must've felt, being forced to kill over and over. It breaks his heart that he scolded him for killing when it must've been such a painful existence for Wolfwood to kill to survive.
Vash is such an interesting character. The man is so completely different from what his reputation paints him to be that he can actually dodge bounty hunters by *claiming to be himself.*
Why I love Vash is because he's so peaceful without being a quitter. Like, some of those "peaceful" anime characters refuse to kill, even to save those they love. But Vash will sacrifice his "do not kill" rule to save those he loves. I respect that way more than refusing to cause harm
Vash's moral dilemma is one that plenty of ordinary people face but in Vash's case its actually easier for him. Just like Superman, it's because he isn't human that makes it so much easier to care for others and always put yourself in harms way. For that contest where Vash threw pebbles to stop bullets from killing people, a regular human wouldn't have that option. They could have the exact same level of moral character and desire as Vash to save people but lack the superhuman ability to do so. Like when Vash faced a lose-lose scenario despite his abilities, regular humans face that scenario where there is nothing they can do far more often. It hurts them as much as it hurt Vash and they need to face it much more often than he does.
Trigun purposefully set it up like that too, Wolfwood was the human character, someone with human limitations, and that humanity was contrasted, in its limitations, to Vash.
Vash is undoubtedly awesome, but there were times where his leaning on Rem's philosophy became trying. Rem was incessantly optimistic to the point of being oblivious to reality. However, Vash's respect for life and skill as an elite gunman that makes you ride along with him until the end.
The local dub version of Trigun used to air on our TV. I was too young then to know what was going on, or even realize it was an anime, but I do remember thinking that Vash looked like a paintbrush. 😅 I was a weird kid.
You're commentary is great. Thanks for doing a video on Vash. He's one of my favorite characters. If I had to choose a word to describe him, it's genuine. Even though he hides a lot of his true self and his history, I feel that all of his choices are rooted in a genuine care for others. Kindness can be something we feel is expected but not something we feel others necessarily deserve. I don't think Vash ever has to make the choice to be kind. He truly cares for others. I admire people like him.
I found it. The most underrated channel on TH-cam. Man, I really fuck with your takes on everything. The entirety of Yu Yu Hakusho, Bebe Kids and now fuckin Trigun? Amazin
Ran across this deep into the search results. Comment for a bump, this obviously took a good amount of work, and deserves the recognition. Cheers and keep at doing the things you find meaning in.
I really like these long form analysis you do. I would add them to your "video essay" playlist, as i didnt even see this one and Trigun is one of my favorites.

A.is my choice. I always prefer the longer more in depth videos, even including the longer production that is my preference.

A great and truthful insight.
Still, though, he has the patience of a saint to not use his strength against those who wish him harm.

@@gJonii not in the Manga he took a super serum that aged him from a kid to an adult and made him more than just human
His screams after killing legato hurt so bad
Yeah, it honestly gets me every time
