I understand... Explained to a friend that there have been a few throughout history. (Audi's classic and modern units, older focus RS, some hummers, VW, and Land Rovers)
Non car enthusiasts have trouble believing an engine can work with an odd number of cylinders. There's no reason they can't (I think there's a new Mini that has a three-cylinder), but everyone is so accustomed to them coming in even number configurations.
It takes 1 extra spark plug....lol
Ben Wickham: The BMW i8 features a 231 HP 3-cylinder! Although I know the technical details of this car well enough, I still can't get over this. In combination with the electric motor the i8 is the most fuel economic hybrid sports car in the world - this wouldn't be possible with a V6. And in sports mode it even creates its own electricity. But even the 3-Cylinder 12 valve Turbo of the Daihatsu Charade GT ti with 101 PS is impressive. In the 90's nobody cared about 3-cylinders, and nobody thought this engine would be reliable. These guys were wrong.

- top reliable
- decent power (170hp in a 22year old NA car, yea thats totaly fine for me)
- runs on basic unleaded 95 without issues
- makes amazing VROOOOM noise
- good fuel economy (9L/100km)
- easy to maintain
- no fucking xxl plastic cover over it needed because it looks damn good

Ayyyyy. Is yours the AW70 or the M56 manual transmission? I got lucky and found one with the M56H manual. Going up to 5500 RPM on the on ramp in 2nd and 3rd is great.
Luke Woessner I watched one of his videos and it seems like it’s the m56 because it’s either stick or a really slow auto.
Probably my favorite engine and started with Volvos also. Too bad Volvo did away with the inline 5 as they sounded so good.

I had a Volvo S60 that had a 5 cylinder Turbo engine and I did a muffler delete on it. Sounded really good. At low revs sounded almost like a V8 and at high revs sounded like a V10. Gave me terrible mpg tho like 17mpg

AirsoftWarfareHD the I5 "sounds" a lot like the I4 Crossplane on the R1 & MT10. Same size as all other 1000s but it drinks fuel like the world's going to end tomorrow. Incredible how an extra 500cc can fuck up fuel economy so much compared to a 2.0L I4(I'm thinking VW, not Volvo tho). 😦

@@dioborghezio I'll take a i6 for sure.. v6 is not nearly as awesome. audi was able to make a i5 without any balance shafts because the motor wants to torque up not vibrate it just required slightly better engine mounts.

They definitely should make a comeback! Diesels get good fuel economy, Petrols sound fantastic, they are reliable, bulletproof and calm running, the extra displacement helps with reliability… Yeah, no reason against it, really…

Coming from a family of Volvos with inline fives, they have to be my favorite engine ever. They just sound amazing low and grunty in low revs and high and screaming once you take them near redline, utter perfection, sad to see Volvo have discontinued their 5 cylinders...

To be honest, inline 5's are some of the best engines out there. They're pretty small and capable of the same if not more power than inline 6's (even JZ's, yes). They're torquey, can fit in more cars, sound awesome and most of them are some of the most reliable engines out there.
The Rotorboi Most people praise 2JZ for being strong with stock internals being able to hold lots of power... Audi i5 engines are just as strong as 2JZ maybe even stronger

I've had 3 different Mercs with a 5 cylinder, same engine thou. all three were 2,7 CDI ( turbo diesel ) W211 E-classes. i always liked their grunt when i mash the pedal. the most memorable were my 2,3 audi Quattro from 1993, fun car.
I like mine :) Wish I saw more Volvo's in this lineup but still happy an awesome post became a video!

I never knew the XC90 could come with a T5, guess it was never an option in the UK here it was either the D5, T6 or V8
Wet Lettuce the XC90 USDM came with a T5 up till 2007. 2008 saw a T6 as the standard engine.

2007 Volvo s60 R owner here the inline 5 is an amazing engine and with 300hp cant complain when the car is 15 years old now.
I have a Volvo V50 2.4 D5, and I just love the growl when I floor it. Also it is fast, and pulls like a train in every gear. The only negative is the slight turbo lag. But once HE (because with that sort of grunt, it can hardly be described as a "she") is moving, the performance for a diesel is just addictive.

Glad the Fiat 20v engine got a mention. they're such a lovely engine in both NA and turbo form. found in the Bravo, Marea and coupe as a 2.0l and also found in the Stilo as a 2.4l. it was discontinued after that. such a shame.

@@TheAngelfuu here in Brazil you can get a Marea 2.0 20v turbo fivetech with 4000 dollars or less. Even when new they blow up bcuz fiat told us to change oil with 20000km... And the oil gallery is too small, so 7000km is the way to go. The Marea is know as the "bomb car" here...
All in all, it's absolutely brilliant, nothing beats the sound of an I5, good old Audi 5 cylinder

I have a Turbodiesel Mercedes-Benz E270! 2.7 turbodiesel I5 engine, first impression when you open the hood is "That's Massive". Secondly is the most reliable engine of Mercedes Benz ever made (the MB has a history of 5cyl engines and their durability) i have another E270 CDI with 1 million kilometres surpassed and it drives like a dream.

I love the sounddd it makes, is as well the best sounding turbodiesel engine of Mercedes-Benz, like a V10 Diesel just ROOAAAARS and makes a very very loud noise like it wants to explode lol :)

I've owned two Volvo T5's. One 2007 S40 T5 AWD and an S60 T5 and they're great daily drivers that sound phenomenal in tunnels and drive magnificently on back roads.
I drive a VW Jetta with a 2.5L 5cyl engine. The sound it makes isn’t super loud but it has a rlly nice tone.

The fuel economy of a v6, the horsepower of a 4cyl., And the steady,smooth torque of a V8.
Fuel economy sucks, and you'd think power should be more but isn't. A 2.5l 5cyl will be less powerful than a 2.5l 4cyl simply because of physics. They love boost though. That same comparison with a turbo is reversed. The 5 sings with a turbo.
@chak lee my rabbit w a manual never got 30mpg. That is ridiculous. Now I have a 2017 GLI and it consistently gets around 35mpg in mixed/ aggressive driving. I get almost 40mpg on a road trip using cruise.

Back in 80s&90sMerc useded both of them.
Admittedly, the five-pot and V10 are my absolute FAVORITE engines. V8s are so common and boring to me, but the sound of a good Straight five or V10 is just... ugh.
The LFA has an even firing v10. if it were an odd firing engine (like bmw's and lambo's v10), it would sound amazing.
Or the carrera GT, it sounds like a formula 1 car

i have a ratchet 2012 VW beetle with a 2.5 in line 5 and it always seems to turn heads at meets or honestly just any where i go. I was nervous straight piping it but ive had it for 6 years so i thought "why the hell not" I've gotten compliments from seemingly all groups of people; karens, older folks, true car enthusiasts, all the way to highschool kids walking down the street. As a car that you hardly ever see modified (maybe you'll see one slammed), as well as having little to no companies that produce aftermarket parts, I truly love it. No one seems to expect my car to sound like that (yes its still slow RIP)
Why a 5cyc? Just listen to the damm thing, sounds like a work of art and with power & torque to match.

I really dig the BT-50/Ranger inline 5. Also the VR5. The VR5 has got to be the best sounding engine ever made.

I remember while shopping for my car I bought a Sonata but I test drove a jets sport wagon with a 5 cylinder and loved the sound so much

the old one 140hp was by audi, it was even badged TDi, the newer ones 160hp and more are Volvo D5, commonrail system, volvo original
Douglas ya I got a i5 colorado. and dam is it a poor design. not great on fuel. pretty under powered. very hard to work on.... really want to chop the muffler to hear how it would sound though lol
Volvos dont have a balancing shaft and they do just fine.

Volvo tunes the mounts to deal with the motion. You can get a LOT of vibration out of those motors, though, if your mounts are weak or you go with some more solid mounts.
The Volvo 5 cylinder engines have only one mount attached to the transmission - and it's located very near the engine. The far side of the transmission has rubber bumpers and moves around quite a bit. The engine floats on two centrally located hydraulic mounts. One end of the block has a mount at the top of the engine - a VERY soft mount - and the other end has a relatively stiff mount at the bottom center of the engine. The engine is anchored to the bottom mount and bounces and twists around rather freely, taking the transmission along for the ride.
Once you realize how the mounting system works you understand exactly why the three non-hydraulic mounts have a tendency to fail so often and why Volvo never changed the mounting setup on those engines.

Polybushed the top mount on my 850 t5. The sound vibrated through to the car very nicely. No it didn't crack the firewall mounting point either. Miss that car

I drive an 07 Jetta Wolfsburg and they were only made that year with an in-line 5. The engine sounds incredible and the car is nimble and light, being on the same chassis as a GTI
One word Audi Quattro Sport and Evo 2 , best sounding rally car ever , once seen never forgotten . I heard my first Sports Quattro Evo 2 , before I even saw it , on the Lombard RAC Rally Stages , at first we thought it was a car with a miss fire , but it just got louder and louder , then it came round the bend out of the trees with that sound , the popping and banging , the turbo waste gate whistling and wooshing , then in a flash it was past us and vanishing back into the woods , that brief encounter with the winged monster Quattro in 1985 stuck with me for the rest of my life and even though the crazy sounding Lancia Delta S4 was also in the event , the Quattro sound was so special .that is why I will always like the 5 cyclinder from Audi .

My Ford Ranger has a 3.2 five pot diesel and yes it's sounds like no other engine out there.
Powerful and smooth will easily do 200 KLM per hour (closed circuit) not bad for a heavy 4x4 capable of towing 3.5 tonnes.
They do have issues tho that are well documented..

i know im 2 yrs late, but the volvo 850 turbo was my favorite 5 cylinder car. this car was able to beat out the non m bmw 325i.

Exactly! I love fiat 2,0 20V 5cylinder engines in Marea, Bravo, Coupe and some Lancias. Also diesel 2,4 JTD is not bad.

We had Marea Weekend HLX with 2,4 JTD 130 and when sold it with 350k on clock, the engine was like new.

I've bought it as my first car 10 years ago and I still own it, among with other cars.
I only had problems with the radiator and water pump, who failed at the same time. The rest is A TANK in releability!
It always gives me a big smile and a lot of fun. I dont care if it only has 155hp, I feel like a king on the road
