  • A quarter of a century after India secured a victory for the ages in the Kargil War, one of the most challenging high-altitude battles ever fought, the division which led the charge has another major reason to celebrate. Major General Sachin Malik is now commanding the 8 Mountain Division, which had led the charge in the Kargil War under the overall leadership of his father, General (Retired) VP Malik, who was the Army chief at the time. General VP Malik had also once commanded the 8 Mountain Division and the father and son are now in Dras to mark the 25th anniversary of the Kargil Vijay Diwas on Friday. That is where NDTV caught up with them for an exclusive conversation.

    Father surely is the major culprit of Kargil. Guy’s army lost hundreds of kilometers of India, with top Indian posts, to Pak. They didn’t have to fire even one shot. Nowhere else in the world.

    Where was Sachin Malik in Kargil war? He would be a young major in Kargil War 1999, when his father was the Chief. Did sachin malik fight any battle during Kargil war? Did any other General's son or son in law fight any battle of Kargil?

    We lost so many lives due to 3 Div Generals. I wonder why the Brig, Col, Lt Col, Major and Captains who fought the Kargil War were never promoted to the Ranks of Major General. Infact they were court martialed. I also want to know where Gen Sachin Malik was at the time of Kargil War? Was he in action? Why it's easier for a General's son to become a General? When Kargil War happend, Gen Malik was in Poland. General did not share intelligence with other Divisions/ Battalion and gave stupid order to reach the mountain top without having any cover. On top of it Govt decided not to cross the LOC. To me its a easy posting because of his background.

    • @ninadbhave5133
      @ninadbhave5133 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you don't know something please don't talk about it. .K. Joshi commanded 13 JAK Rif (famous for winning 2 PVCs) and retired as Lt. Gen. Joshi. Mohindar Pratap Singh Bajwa commanded 27 Punjab and retired as a Brigadier. These are just a couple of examples.
      And if you think commanding 8 Mountain Div is an "easy posting", you either don't know anything, or you are deliberately being a rabble rouser. In any case, it is pretty pathetic.

    • @amitbasra5276
      @amitbasra5276 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ninadbhave5133 I am not talking about easy or tough posting. I asked how many ended up being Generals ( Maj Gen, Lt Gen)? By giving one or two examples you cannot brush things under the carpet. And even in your example you did not find many and ended up mentioning about a Brig. Brig and below ranks were not given their dues abd were made scapegoats. What action is taken against the Corps commanders or Div Commanders in Kargil War. Why the earlier reports of Saurabh Kalia were not taken seriously? Where was Sachin Malik when Kargil happened...in HQ or in the field? Why Brig Devender Singh's plan worked more accurately and that too in quick time with less casualties. I know you there are some who do not learn from their mistakes.

    • @ninadbhave5133
      @ninadbhave5133 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@amitbasra5276 OK, let me put it this way. Maybe that will help. Of around 15,000 Lieutenants, most become captains, of which 2/3 become majors, of which again 2/3 become Lt. Colonels and about the same ratio become Colonels. Then the pyramid gets steep. Of 5000 colonels, only 1/3 or about 1500 become Brigadiers, of which only 10% of 150 become Major Generals, and only half of those become Lt. Generals. Battles are almost never fought by people above Colonel rank because usually they're simply too old. In 1999 around 500 officers actually fought, of whom the lion's share would be Lieutenants, captains and majors, with a handful of Lt. Cols and Cols thrown in. Considering the above ratio, it is entirely logical that only about 2 Maj. Generals and 1 Lt. General would have emerged out of that fighting force, while the other 148 and 84 respectively would NOT have been participants. It's just simple math, and it holds.
      You also have to understand that except for rare field promotions, accelerated promotions are not official policy in the Indian army, largely to shun a culture of glory hunting. That is the case in most professional standing armies by the way. Bravery is a given. Furthermore, please understand that the hire up you go, the more you have to be capable of a number of managerial capabilities. Just as not every brilliant engineer makes the beset VP of Engineering, and just as not every Sachin Tendulkar makes the best captain, similarly not every braveheart is suited for promotions to flag ranks! It is not about bravery; it is about suitability to the job.
      This also happens at the highest levels. One of India's most brilliant generals, Lt. Gen. Harbaksh Singh did not get selected to be army chief. There are lots of conspiracy theories this was so because he was Sikh etc., but the simple fact of the matter is the person who did get selected was both senior to (came from an earlier Academy batch) and was also younger than Gen. Harbaksh. His name was Gen. SHFJ Manekshaw. Get the picture?

      @@Bawa3Sorry so called subedar sahab, My bad.
      On a serious note, Shouldnt it based on merits and how many areas you covered in your tenure. We have seen many instances wherein we lost china war because of inexperienced generals, our inexperienced generals like gen mishra showed cowardice in 1965 and left his willy jeep to be captured by pakistanis. He ran like a rat.
      Later on lahore was captured by another lietenant general despite orders of chief of staff for him retreat because he was afraid.l and than later on the general who captured lahore was not given gallantry but was awrded court of enquiry similar gen manekshaw by a coward called gen kaul.
      The generalship history of indian army is not that great except certain superheors, like gen shabeg, cariappa, manekshaw , jacob etc.

      @@fcselenacabio LOC cross na karna ek strategic decision tha. It gave us the moral high ground and frankly ensured we got world support- the Israeli smart bombs for example, could never have come to us if the Americans had not given a green light. Americans would not have pressed Nawaz Sharif for unconditional withdrawal without it, especially if the war had expanded to the international border like in 1965. Taking back what was ours was always the objective and that was met. For Army also casualties would have been reduced if they could cross international border, but it was a political decision at the end of the day, and in retrospect if was the right one because India didn't have to contend with Pak army and air force etc. It also reduced the economic burden of the war. Not every correct political decision need be the most agreeable military decision. For example, in the Korean war in 1950, Gen. Macarthur recommended dropping 10 nuclear bombs on China to end the war, and at the time it was possible also since no one else had the weapons, but US president Truman negated it, fired the 5 star general, and continued the war for another 3 years conventionally. Militarily, a bad decision. Politically, the correct one.

    No General's son or son in law was wounded or killed in Kargil War. In fact aken out of enemy's range of fire. Somehow on attaining seniority they become Generals without fighting any real battles as do progeny of ordinary civilians and Colonel below officers. A young Major during Kargil war, Sachin Malik was posted out to a peace station. Re-emerged nevertheless as General Officer Commanding Kargil 8 Mountain Division. If one reads the profile of General VP Malik commissioned in 1959 and was a young officer during 3 wars 1962, 1965, 1971, there are no achievements as young officer as would any illustrious General have. However his list of achievements begin from Brigadier rank. Sab Gol Maal hai. From the very beginning to end. He protected every erring Kargil General including Zoo Orchestra Major General VS Budhwar, his hand picked man whose career suddenly rose after Malik became Chief in September 1997. There is some un holy nexus that cost the nation 527 brave hearts martyred and thousands wounded.

They were used to say that only few intruders are there and pressurized the ground men colnel to attack.
