Bought that model banjo while I was vacation. Ended up putting thicker baritone strings on it and nixed the frets. Changed the bridge and nut out for one that is similar to a violins to allow for the thicker strings. Decent sound but the smooth bassy slides make it totally worth it...
Did you change the bridge, Paul? I don't remember it being compensated - mind you it must be a year or so since you got the banjo and it's been through a few changes. The tone ring makes a huge difference, not that it didn't sound good straight from the box.

Paul, that banjo dose not sound that way because of the ring, it sound comes from your fingers. It's you.
