MUCH credit must go to Ben Mankiewicz for being such a superb host, giving the talk such electrifying energy, responding with such humorous attentiveness, and never interrupting Bogdanovich's storytelling. Ben does after all hail from a legendary family, so it's no surprise he chats as an equal!

Peter's vocalizations of Orson Welles, Hitchcock, John Huston, etc., are absolutely spot-on! It's as if they were suddenly present at the interview. His passion for and absolute devotion to the art of motion pictures is plain for anyone to see!
Ben Mankiewicz is such a professional.
I can listen to Bogdanovich for hours. I think he's fascinating.
Like Welles himself, Bogdanovich is a great story teller/public speaker.
What Bogdanovich says here about the magic of film (in his excellent Jimmy Stewart voice)--that, when it works, you are "giving people little tiny pieces of time that they never forget"--can stand as a pretty good description of what he give us in these reminiscences too. What a delight.
I was walking home one Friday evening in Santa Monica - traffic lights- 6th and Arizona, no nobody around and waiting to cross and a guy across the streets waiting to come my way and in a split second I sussed it was Peter and I said hello and said I had loved his book on Directors years before! My story
Peter Bogdanovich was 82 years old, when he died on January 6, 2022 today!!!
He was older than he seemed.
Bogdanovich is a treasure of cinema. I love hearing what he has to say about anything. He has so many great and wonderfully told film anecdotes and insights.

I love how the people feel the need to applaud every time Peter mentions a movie they’ve heard of.
Bogdanovich is a masterful story teller re-telling stories told by masters. And what a great interviewer Ben Mankiewicz has become... he says the minimum. Just enough to keep the interview going along, seemingly effortlessly.

Bogdanovich embodies the love of film to me. Everyone will talk about The Last Picture Show, but I think of his comments on River Phoenix in The Thing Called Love. He called River his friend. And then there is his small but very important role in the Sopranos. And I am just scratching the surface here.
I personally like Nickelodeon. He got amazing work from Burt Reynolds on that one.
I've been impressed by Peter B. since. I was 13 or 14. My friends and I loved his early movies. I never changed my mind, I always thought he was one of the best film directors of my lifetime. He was forgotten for a while, glad he's getting the recognition he deserves.
Super impressed that Peter met Cagney in 1972 . Wish he could have coaxed the great star out of retirement. Milos Forman did in 1981, but Cagney's physical health had rapidly declined by then. Bogdanovich's books & documentaries are to be cherished. Last Picture Show is a beautifully funny/sad masterpiece that gets better with time...Hawks or Renoir could not have improved that screenplay.
I saw LPShow once & was captivated by the real emotions coming out of Cloris Leachman & Timothy Bottoms. Haven't seen it since.
James Cagney was a Diabetic. He was not well. Diabetes killed him. Very sad.

How can Bogdanovich have So many great stories. What a terrific interview
Peter was a masterful storyteller. That was how he was in life, not just in front of a large audience.
Anyone wanting to know the components of how to tell an interesting, and humorous story could learn a lot by listening to him.
I read everything Bogdanovich wrote in Esquire as they were published and he really shaped my enjoyment of movies. I should say that I also read Kael and their conflict over Kane is instructive. Nobody talks much about Pauline Kael but I think Bogdanovich will continue to be influential.

RIP, Peter. I wish I could have met him … and spend several hours - make that _days_ - with him talking about John Ford.

First reason I wanted to watch it was : Peter made such great impressions of celebrities (his Hitchcock always cracks me uo). But as I was watching, I realized how genuinely knowledgeable he was on the movie business. I didn't have an inkling of how many celebrities he knew personally. His age took a long time to show up so when he was telling stories about Hitchcock from the early 60s, je seemed lije he would have been too young to have known John Ford, Howard Hawkes and Jim Cagney personally, but he did. A surprisingly endearing, fascinating man. My strongest rscomnendations to that piece of cinema history.
Rest to bogdanovich, a lifer and interesting life he led really came full circle for him well deserved imo..
I always enjoy raconteurs without their ego influencing their stories. This was enjoyable.

@@bobd1082 Why ? He was in love with Dorothy until that psycho husband killed her....and she was divorcing him. I know he married her sister, but, so what? Understandably he was grieving Dorothy.
Corman still lives!
His ex-wife Pollie Platt was the reason he had three successful films. Last Picture Show, What's Up Doc, and Paper Moon.

Peter's great. His stories are great. Reading now his Who The Devil Made It. An incredible collection of interviews with some of the the greatest directors. Highly recommended! And in context of the interview I also highly recommend seeing Welle's The Trial. Amazing film. I've never met anyone who's actually seen it.

I just watched a 50 year old interview of Bodganovich in the Dick Cavett show. How much more interesting the man has become since!

Like the fella said, masterful storyteller - - Peter Bogdanovich. Any DVD with a Bogdanovich audio commentary, regardless of whose film it is, is worth getting. Criterion should book Bogdanovich for another audio track for a blu ray release of ANY film by any director.

do you spend all day looking into the mirror?

BTW pretty much the ONLY interviews that DO interest me are found right here, on TWC! Most current interviews are done with people that have some small notoriety & are usually no talent nothing's, in my humble opinion, of course, THOSE do NOT interest me nor do they pique my curiosity. I guess that I should've made that abundantly clear!

The people doing the interviewing are usually ill-prepared (Larry King was notorious for this) and the people being interviewed have little of value to say. It doesn't seem to matter who they are: politicians, artists, directors, writers, actors. They all bore me. I used to like to listen to Gore Vidal but he got old and died. But he was a witty interviewee. Bogdanovich is still good but he's fading. I liked Dick Cavett's interview of Katherine Hepburn. But that was almost 50 years ago. There's no one really fascinating around now. Our culture is poor and bland and grey. And young kids are fed shit like Marvel Universe movies, so unreal; video games as cinema. Their brain cells atrophy watching the screen. How could such a culture produce anyone interesting? As crazy as he was, J.D. Salinger was probably right in turning his back on the whole thing and never giving an interview.

Wonderful story teller. He is like the old Dos Equis guy, worlds most interesting man. Great interviewer as well. Just watched his interview of David Chase of the Sopranos. He is just flat out interesting.

There are other videos on TH-cam where he talks extensively about Paper Moon. That's my favorite of his movies. It's perfect from the first shot to the last.

Does anyone know what happened to the Bogdanovich 7-year diary book mentioned toward the end of this video? Peter Bogdanovich says it was already edited and due to be published that year, 2017. But no sign of it.
