Here's How You Can Turn A Lexus GX 460 Into An Overlanding Beast WITHOUT Breaking The Bank!

  • In this video, Andre takes a stock 2021 Lexus GX 460 we recently tested - a luxury SUV based on the overseas Prado with a V8 engine and some serious off-road potential. These days, it's billed more as an on-road family hauler, but with some modifications, you can turn it into a serious overlanding rig. Even better, it's not as expensive as you might think to get started!

    What made the GX catch fire was when the off road market went up supply of 4runners for sale went down and people went looking for a replacement. People figured out you could side step the toyota tax on a 4r and get luxo features + v8 in a used GX.
    My gx470 took a bunch of CO and UT trails to include blackbear pass with just rock rails and 265/70r17 A/T. There are vids around of others with just tire climbing the escalator on hells revenge. I think the GX is a solid market replacement to the 4r.

    You know what I really like about the Prado that I wish I could do in my 4Runner? I really like the fact that if I am in 4Low, I can leave the center diff unlocked. This is highly useful because if I am visiting my friend at the top of a mountain (and yes, I do have a friend who lives in the mountains), if I have to go down a very steep windy mountain road, I can do so in low range, get the engine breaking so I don't have to ride my breaks down a mountain and overheat them, and at the same time by leaving the center diff unlocked, I don't have to worry about binding my drive train binding.

    I'm looking to get a new car and upgrade to an SUV from my Lexus LS460 and I want something that's luxury and primarily a daily driver but if I want to go overlanding and camping in country back roads in upstate NY, I want something that could potentially handle that. I'm seeing a lot about the GX do people recommend that as the most capable of the luxury suv for offroading? Would really appreciate any recommendations

    So with the ride mode and air suspensions being removed for this lift...does it still have KDSS?

    • @christopherwilson9140
      @christopherwilson9140 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can remove air springs and shocks and keep kdss. As a matter of fact you should hang on to your kdss as long as possible because it will enhance basic and mild setups.

    what rim offset did you use to get the 275/70/17 tires to fit without rubbing? looks great!

    That still doesn't fix the GX poor departure angles issue, compared to Land Rovers.

    Planning on the same 275 or 265 tire/icon wheel setup but with no lift. Do you think the tire would rub? Any advise

    Interesting no mention or video shots as to if they left the rear air bags in or not.

      I believe they removed the rear air suspension, since they mention in the video that the suspension dampening button is no longer functional.

    Cost to change the front bumper/grill as shown? Lift height after mods? Approach/departure angles?

    • @TheAntinowherelane
      @TheAntinowherelane 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That bumper/grill is just the previous body style. 2019 & older. Spindle grill was added in 2020. Lift adds approx 3in (11in) over stock (8in) depending on A/M kit used. Old Man Emu is a good bet.

    Don't need to do anything to a GX. Just get in and drive it... it's a gorilla in a tuxedo... change the tires if you want... the thing just cruises over land... guess that's where it got its name from..lol

      You can fit a 32in A/T spare tire underneath the GX470 so I am pretty certain you can on the GX460. 33in tires or bigger will not fit in the spare tire location.

      Because Toyota already had a mid size SUV with the 4Runner. The “Prado” here also has a V8 and it’s a lot nicer inside.
