Caruana’s cunning chess combination

  • Featured is the game between Fabiano Caruana and Ruslan Ponomariov from the 2014 Dortmund Sparkassen Tournament. The opening is a Petrov’s Defense, Nimzowitsch Attack with Caruana and Ponomariov both castling queenside. In the middlegame, Caruana’s f4 creates targetable isolated pawns in Ponomariov’s camp. In the endgame, Ponomariov’s principled looking b6 carries a weakness that Caruana quickly exploits. The final combination by Caruana was so aesthetic that Ponomariov was kind enough to let it play out straight to mate!

    Really classy of Ponomariov to let the tactic play out. The romantic in me feels like more games should actually end in checkmate.

    That is a very gentleman move of GM Ponomariov allowing this great combination be written in books for us to appreciate the beauty of the game. Unlike what GM Robert Byrne did when he resigned after Fischer played Qd7..i read fischer's regret of it because his opponent resigned after seeing the combination of tactics.

      Certainly Caruana’s Cunning Chess Combination Commenced Climactically. Which is why it was such a shocker when Fabiano played pawn C7, capturing an enemy pawn, as his opening move. Unprecedented.

    I got White’s 2nd to last move right albeit I was not confident about the move order between that and White’s 3rd to last….
    Probably because I totally missed White’s concluding move! Happens to me alot.
    Anyway, this reminded me to ask you: Do you think that anywhere around middle game GMs ever just see a *configuration* that they’re confident will lead to a win - or do you think they invariably calculate precisely, move by move?

  • @TheMarksT
    @TheMarksT ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That is a nice mating pattern to remember, or it could be missed!
    I had a chance once, to use it, but missed it being also distracted, but noticed.I had the chance right after making a different move!
    But I did see it after seeing a game Fabi played (maybe this one here, but years ago checking his greatest games) where he mated just like this.
    I pays to study a little, each super GM to see why there are

  • @youuuuuuuuuuutube
    @youuuuuuuuuuutube ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Found g6 and Ba6 but missed Re7... basically Caruana was thinking: this bishop and queen could mate the king ... only if the black rook and queen could leave the 8th rank, and so he had a plan to make that happen.

    The minute that Queen made it to C6, I was looking for that bishop queen checkmate. Didn't see that rook sacrafice, tho. Of course it was super obvious after it was played. Fabiano had to see that several moves out. I guess that's why he is a super GM and I'm a 1800 😂
