    Great improvements on the Chick shaw. This looks a lot lighter than the original plan. Great Idea on the automatic door.

      Thanks Zola, the automatic door is about $260 but I am sure it’s saved enough hens to pay for its self

    WOW! This is awesome! You know, you could make a nice business for yourself building these aluminum chick shaws for people. I know I would buy one from you! Excellent example of improving an already great product! Kudos!!!

    Good stuff! “Run chicken” makes a great automatic door. Avoid the cheap stolen copy from China as the door I hear jams. Welding aluminum is difficult.

      Thanks for watching and for your kind words. We are in Michigan and we do have quite a few videos on the 🇺🇸 Bresse, we love the breeding so much and have been helping people get there start in on this breed for 6 months now.

    Thanks to your video I have a Chickshaw in the works that will hopefully be just like yours. What brand of door opener is this? I'm only finding ones that open by sliding the door panel vertically up which won't work. And do you have an issue with hens sleeping in the laying box? I see that the Best Nest Box offers their "original Perk Popper" to help prevent this. Just wondering what your experience has been. Thanks.

      Thanks for watching, we are in Michigan so mostly 0-95 degrees Fahrenheit. I have close to 60 birds in it right now and I would say that’s about max. I have a Chickshaw without the nest box and have had almost 100 grow outs in it.

    Loved seeing your aluminum version. Looks very light and easy to move. Does your goose climb inside without the ramp?

    • @The.Recreational.Homestead
      @The.Recreational.Homestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Dawn, my goose never goes inside even when I had a ramp. It stinks when you want to move them because you need to catch the goose but if someone try’s to even go up to the coop the goose is on them. He does a great job of keeping a lookout all day and night.

    What is the cost 💲 difference between the metal and the wood version ?

    • @The.Recreational.Homestead

      Thanks for subscribing, this one was about $2400 in supplies. I am not sure what the wood one would be, I know I priced it out in 2019 and it was around $1200 I think

    I just built a traditional chicken coop. I don’t live in as harsh of a state as far as winter goes . The birds are ok living in that in the winter time ? Is there anything special that you need to do for them in winter months for them to survive the cold ?

    • @The.Recreational.Homestead
      @The.Recreational.Homestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have had hens in it down to -10 degrees Fahrenheit but they aren’t laying eggs at that point. Putting straw bales around the outside definitely helps when you get below freezing

    Would the metal get too hot in the summer?

    • @The.Recreational.Homestead
      @The.Recreational.Homestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems to be ok but that is why I used wood perches because I thought the metal would be hot or cold

    Will they cook alive on 120°+ weather while inside? If not how much do you think they'll last?

    • @The.Recreational.Homestead
      @The.Recreational.Homestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question, at 105 they are in it and under it to stay cool in the shade. I don’t love that part because they end up pooping on each other but they seem to do just fine. I would like to add a different source of shade at some point.

  • @Jlind9335
    @Jlind9335 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What kind of climate do you live in? Worried the metal might get too hot for the chickens. This is my first year with AMerican Bresse Chickens. Only got 6 at the time. Then couldn't find any more. Later I will be gathering eggs. They are curious birds. They don't like my feet sometime go after them. I am still not sure if they will be aggressive odd or different personalities. Not really mean they however are only 3 months old. Kind of like them because they seem different.

    • @The.Recreational.Homestead
      @The.Recreational.Homestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am in Michigan and last week it was 95 with high humidity and the birds all hung out in or under the chickshaw. I did the cedar roosts so they wouldn’t be hot or cold.
      The 🇺🇸 Bresse is a great breed and if you give them enough room they are not aggressive at all.
