    Sam, I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this video, but there’s a little gem in here that doesn’t get much emphasis. Drilling a small hole in the bowl of the scoop as a thickness indicator is so helpful, especially for beginners. Like a lot of other turners, I “take spells” turning certain items. I’ve turned scoops (homage to Richard Raffan) over the years. I’m going to use the little thickness test the next time I make scoops. Thanks for your willingness to teach your techniques to the rest of us.

      Thanks very much. I think I learned that from Richard Raffan, but yes, a very nice technique to save yourself from making it too thick.

    Thankyou very much for going through the whole process Sam other then all the sanding. You might think some of the turning is boreing but I don't. I can sit and whatch you all weekend long LOL. That's how we learn.

      I always get nervous when I upload a 25 minute video. I started with 65 minutes of film. So I real led had to do some editing. Glad you liked it.

    I thought I had seen all your old stuff but missed this one somehow. It just came to me in the current AAW email. Scoops are always a great turning. Everybody likes them and they are useful as well as decorative. As others have mentioned, I would have used some tailstock support after the bowl was hollowed. I always enjoy watching you work. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.

    Hi Sam,
    Love the wood, and your skew work is great. I know you say you aren't very good with the skew, but the detail work on the scoop shows how good you really are!!! Another item to try.....got to stop watching ya!! Best, Bob

    Loved this one Sam. A little tip I learned from "treenware" making, and I used crab apple before to make spoons, is to keep your small pieces in a freezer bag with the shavings to cure, and it worked very well with no cracking at all. Good vid!

      @WYOMINGWOODTURNER  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I often put pieces into garbage bags but for small stuff a freezer bag would be the ticket. Never thought of that. Thanks Sam

      A scoop is just a goblet with a little wood cut out of the bowl. I usually make them a little shorter, which is much easier.

      I have never actually turned a proper goblet. I have done a couple out of an odd branch or two. I thought that this scoop would have been better as a goblet. Thanks for your support, and once again--the video with Chris was amazing.

    Nice job! I can't do a piece with that much overhang without bringing up the tail stock for support. I have a homemade cone center I use for these larger diameters.

    sam thats a really nice scoop,,i made one after watching your video and it turned out nice,,i have been trying to do one like the others do,,which is hollowing it out after you finish it,,but i have the most trouble,,i have tried all the jigs i have seen on here but i guess i just dont have the touch,,lol,,again,,nice video,,,

    • @WYOMINGWOODTURNER
      @WYOMINGWOODTURNER  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      well I seen one that carl Jacobson made,,and a donut chuck that mike pence uses,,i have looked at all the videos and tried makin the same jig but always have problems,,,actually I think most of the problem is me,,,turning the sphere completely round is hard for me,,lol,,im close,,but not close enough,,i have even thought about getting a after market sphere jig,,,lol,,,,any thoughts!!!!

    I enjoyed this project. Question, why didn't you bring up a cone center once the scoop was done for tail stock support?

    • @WYOMINGWOODTURNER

      +Allan Wright I have a very firm hold on this piece of wood. I did not think I needed it. I would have brought it up if I had any vibration. Sam

    Nice Scoop Sam! How would you chuck a scoop with more of a spoon shape. I've tried turning a spoon with a wood chuck I made but it's not consistent and difficult to keep the spoon centered. Not to mention the mini propeller that's spinning around. Thanks.

    • @WYOMINGWOODTURNER
      @WYOMINGWOODTURNER  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Scott, I have only turned one or two "propeller" spoons. Bit here is a good video with good chucking methods.
      Turning a Wooden Scoop If I did spoon, this is what I would do. Sam

    Another great video. I really like the scope idea, I will be trying it soon. Thanks for sharing. Do you mix anything with you shellac? If so what is it? Thanks again.

    • @WYOMINGWOODTURNER
      @WYOMINGWOODTURNER  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use shellac flakes mixed with denatured alcohol. You can also just get Zinnser shellac by the quart in the hardware store. Sam

      I suppose a steady would help. I don't have one. This piece is not too long and can be accomplished with care. I have thought about making one but just never got it done.

  • @mikel9567
    @mikel9567 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have done woodworking my whole life but admitedly not much wood turning. I am curious as to why you "finish" the project with shellac before you are complete with it. I would think that it would make more sense to just finish it when your completely through with the turning.

    Hey Sam, ever turn miniatures? I'm looking for a small lathe with enough versatility to hold and shape a piece of wood that is 1/4 or 3/8 dia. and maybe 3" long.

    • @WYOMINGWOODTURNER
      @WYOMINGWOODTURNER  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Seth Warner I think any lathe will work. I large lathe can turn very small stuff. (A small lathe will not turn really large stuff). What is more important is the chucking method you use. You might check out Bonnie Kline and her turning style. She has don lots of miniature. I would think that glue blocks would be a good way to go. But no I really have not turned mixtures. Sam
