Mark is my favorite artist. I have been a fan for years. Now, I can understand why some may not like this album, but to me, it is a journey that Mark is taking me on, stretching the boundaries of what music can be. At the very least, it is heartfelt, honest and original. Ghosts, April, and everything else still exist so there is no need to cry about the past. Maybe one day Mark will go back to making more palatable music. Maybe not. Either way, I am here for the long haul.
I'm crazy about Sun Kil Moon/Mark Kozelek just not as into his newer stuff. "April" is one of my favorite albums of all time and "Moorestown" one of my favorite songs
I think this recent material from Mark Kozelek works much better as a live performance rather than a traditional album. I was at one of his recent shows in Scandinavia which was a two and a half hour performance which felt almost more like a standup routine or spoken word performance with music added rather than a typical concert. The bulk of the material played were from this album, however the instruments featured were only a acoustic guitar and grand piano (and Mark's lyrics on a note stand, if that counts). I personally think the live instrumentation was more emotionally resonant and Mark's interaction with the audience made it all feel more real and engaging.
I'd say that this's meant to have a bit of a broken aesthetic which makes it quite hard to get as an album, its good for a certain time and a certain place but not always fits the winter nicely
great review! you hit the nail on the head when you said this is like a podcast - what with the book and hotel reviews! No one is writing stuff like Koz. He's a true genius.
Love how you’re always on your game Anthony. This album is very emotional, but then again everything Mark produces is emotional but nothing compares to Benji
"Just rambling his way through the instrumentals" Reminds me of some Regina Spector songs. If I remember right, one of her songs is a grocery list or something mundane like that.
Very good points about the artist seemingly using an album like a vlog or a podcast. I have the same hangup with Car Seat Headrest sometimes. All too often the lyrics feel too self-referential for their own good.
Nice review. Interesting how it's getting received. Like all Mark's recent out it's totally mixed bag, agree with the take that Mark's music is more like a musical podcast or something now and just not a normal listen. Musically I felt Linda Blair is one of the stronger tracks on here, along with Soap For Joyful Hands and definitely the title track, for me at least. I also think it's genuinely funny, the funniest release he's put out yet, but maybe this doesn't translate on record as well as it did live, and comedy can be a divisive thing to use in music. I like it but not exactly in love with it either. Finally, Anthony/everyone, did you listen to the second collab with Jesu, because that was a highlight and the strongest album Mark's sang on since at least Universal Themes imo, melodically much richer than this new album for example.
A good song to start with would be The Highway Song. I couldn’t see many people actually disliking that song. The instrumental is straight fire, and the interludes are really interesting (he turns a very bizarre and esoteric story into this amusing self-deprecating description of himself)
I actually really like his new stuff. I especially like the self titled track. I am a huge fan of RHP and early Sun Kil Moon as well of course. Those are actual “songs”, but his new stuff is kind of like listening to a musical podcast
2:45 Nick Cave? Bob Dylan? Craig Finn (admitably you never mentioned him but God in Chicago is amazing) Yeah they are more music focused than mark kozelek but not by that much on multiple songs; O' malleys bar, Oh my lord, desolation row etc.

Benji was my introduction to Sun Kil Moon, and I loved (and still love) that album. It's a wonderful blend of stream of consciousness lyrics and poignant, thoughtful personal observations. With every release since then, Sun Kil Moon has focused on the stream of consciousness part, completely disregarding any interesting points about society or his own life in favor of pointless ramblings about serial killers, fans, and other artists. His songs feel unedited, and not in a way that comes off as authentic, but in a way that sounds careless. (Drinking game: Drink every time he says "sick fuck" in one of his songs.) It makes me think that Benji was a fluke. But I don't know, maybe I don't "get it." Who has enjoyed his output since Benji, and what have you liked about it?
