    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
Hey, I could really use your help.
If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com.
You can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here right now and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!”

    Thanks!

For all week I’ve seen another sign. It kind of looks like your hand slides across and off the non-dominant hand. Is it just an accent/regional difference? I can send you the link

      Shaun,
Sure, I'm happy to check out your link.
The point in the video differentiating "all week" from week is mostly about all-week using a quick downward movement smacking onto the palm and then doing the slide movement across the palm. If it slides "off" the palm in a straight manner that is indeed a version of all week. If it slides off and then curves it can mean next week.
Here is a version of "all week" th-cam.com/video/27vfuWcbz8I/w-d-xo.html
      Here is a version of "next-week" th-cam.com/video/EAntPU5T-qQ/w-d-xo.html

Krishaun and/or Shaun: I checked out your link and that version is "just a version." It is not a regional difference but rather that particular concept (whole week) is just rather variable "community wide."
In the "real world" you'll see lots of versions.
For example see this example in which the lady on the left signs "whole week" using a combination of UP-TO-NOW + WEEK:
      th-cam.com/video/FOS5A2KOdUE/w-d-xo.html
Check out this version where the fellow signs whole week starting back on the wrist area of his non-dominant hand:
      th-cam.com/video/Z2P_VjqIS9w/w-d-xo.html
This fellow does the concept "whole week" using one hand and combining the signs ALL-[whole] and WEEK:
      th-cam.com/video/myteNHGLgeQ/w-d-xo.html
This person does a two handed combination of ALL-whole + WEEK:
      th-cam.com/video/dBKY0y6Zypk/w-d-xo.html
So we see people creating the meaning of whole by either:
      1. Inflecting (changing) the sign "week" by extending the movement of the sign or doing the sign with more emphasis.
      2. Adding a second sign that (in context) can be interpreted as meaning "whole."

Bill Vicars thank you! Do you suggest learning all versions or just sticking to one? I guess they’re all correct but just depend on the signers style?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@tyree3774 I recommend learning a good solid version and then keeping in mind that it is common to "inflect" (modify) signs by doing them faster or slower, bigger or smaller, with more or less facial expression, with a nodding or shaking head, and other modifications to adjust the meaning of the sign. Sure, if your brain is good at packing away multiple versions of signs it will help you to better understand a wider variety of communication partners. Still though I find that most students benefit from moving forward in the lessons and acquiring additional new vocabulary rather than attempting to exhaustively learn every version of every sign. The goal (or at least one of the main goals) is to reach minimal communicative competency relatively quickly and then get out there in the community and start having real conversations with real Deaf folks. At that point your signing skills will soar.
