while studying music, the biggest criticism from my professor was that looped music (usually HipHop and most dance/electronica) tends not to go ‘anywhere’ ...I think they would find themselves remiss upon digging deeper to find quality music/artists such as this...thank you for taking me somewhere with you
if we're talking opinions, then okay it could go anywhere. But anyone teaching music at a university level who doesn't understand looping, who then doesn't understand how classical minimalism can be directly compared to that, and then most folk music for god's sake, I just don't know. And the dude who taught me theory said the same kind of stuff and I don't hate him but it's like come on now.
@@pusonhands i’m pretty sure my professor who has a doctorate in Musicology and taught me 4 part counterpoint and college lvl music theory III understands looping as they also had a DAW production lab and course shortly after I graduated in 05... looped music also has the opportunity to “go somewhere” but it’s up to the artist to tastefully “go there” without totally losing the groove.
i’m glad to have revisited this piece, it really is a stark criticism of the exact matters at hand using the motif of a ‘derelict’ loop and the banality of lower societal values...and appropriately, just as it gets good it’s cut short-hopefully in the bigger idea of the album the next track is some type of bigger statement using more melody and harmony to transcend the more basic human desires for something that delivers the soul on a spiritual quest which we all desire ...something past “fcuk b!tvhes, make m0ney...” type themes so commonly found in most popular music today.
The drop is beyond anything else I've heard. Like it won't fall on it's own, and you need to psychologically dig it out before it falls and relieves the tension.
I keep coming back to this video. I think it is the mixing of bible references with the analogy of pimping being possession. The horror of "You still owe for that rib, hoe gotta pay that back with interest" exposing how culturally we have been indoctrinated with misogyny for thousands of years in the first half. The initially uplifting second half becomes truly terrifying when we realize that these beliefs have been so deeply ingrained into our minds generation after generation that even if religion dies out, they will probably be "eternal".
Gd damn this clip is awesome. The set selection, camera work, hair & make-up, editing, styling, framing, choreography, production, performance, all of it is drop-dead gorgeous, sharp as a knife and laser-focussed. This is next-level.
Have to admit I didn't recognize the greatness of this song on my first play-through of the album. Now that I've played the album while working throughout the week, and seeing this amazing imagery, I fully recognize the art behind it all. Incredible.
The one track out of the new album that deserved a video clip the most. Astonishing chemistry of sounds and mind-blowing deliveries from both Robyn Hood and Counterfeit Madison! And what an amazing video clip! Thank you for this!!!
I am not a huge listener of rap, but something about clipping… This, for example, is one of the most musically interesting songs I’ve ever heard. To say nothing of the many, many songs of his I am completely addicted to. This is its own art. Genuinely breathtaking.
I took it that the pimp illustrations were to highlight. my interpretation of the imagery and song was that it was about possession of culture, religion, and ritual
What I love about music is that it has the ability to arouse some kind of connection to its theme, no matter what that theme is for the viewer. I saw this as recognizing black beauty and the frustration of the country and the world not recognizing black beauty, and what that means for us as a community.
new clipping, new JPEGMAFIA, new Danny Brown, new Counterparts, new Norma Jean, new La Dispute, and so much more I can't remember off the top of my head... 2019 was a tight year musically

They are amazing. You need to search youtube for their other vids/albums. Then go look for Daveeds other videos. I knew he was a fast rapper from Hamilton, but some of his other songs blow that away. The first song from Splendor and Misery (Hugo award nominee) blew my mind. Oh...and listen to "The Deep" also nominated, but there has also been a book written from the theme of the song. Written by Rivers Solomon. I could go on...but yes, clipping. is amazing and everyone in it is so talented!
Check out the Live on KEXP video, it's freaking amazing, and they have a guest DJ scratching, who apparently appears on a lot of their music and tours with them. I forget his name...

I love that distorted rise in the 2nd half
second half is earth shattering
It was like surreal alternative pop from mid 2010s
i just realized this is one of the few clipping songs that has featured artists that also follow their "no first person lyrics" rule
Singing at the end is absolutely angelic… gives me chills
Also fuck bitches, get money👍👍👍
Holy christ my entire body broke out into cold chills at that crescendo at the end.
The drop is beyond anything else I've heard. Like it won't fall on it's own, and you need to psychologically dig it out before it falls and relieves the tension.

Almost all the songs in the album deserve a good visual. Because the lyrics are so descriptive. Like they’re painting such intricate scenes.

@Zachary does gacha Well… I mean… kinda? Clipping’s got plenty of experimental songs that are hard to call rap, so maybe it’s wrong to call it that
how does a video with this high quality production not break into the mainstream? this is epic.
I just recently got into clipping and so far everything I heard/seen got an immediate visceral reaction from me. That is art.
I love how they literally just did blood of the fang now this^^
This was randomly on my feed and not gonna lie I'm not dissapointed.
I think this song is about possession, and how having a pimp is like being possessed in the worst way.
By definition, having a pimp means you're possessed as they would "own" you
I took it that the pimp illustrations were to highlight. my interpretation of the imagery and song was that it was about possession of culture, religion, and ritual
