Very cool that you're resurrecting my old car! Yes I sold it back in 2005 when I ran across an ultra-low mile 86.5 5-speed car. The turbo "kit" on this car was the first production parts allotment produced by Boostlogic before they had their feet planted on the ground, but the way it's on the car now does not reflect how it was mounted in 2005: the large 4" torque-tube hanger for the turbo assembly is missing, the coat hangers were added (not needed with the 3.5" air intake mount, and zip-ties were used somewhat here/there to ensure a high-hang on less important items. I have NO idea why the large BOV was added near the intake...yes it does look awful and you cannot vent to atmosphere like that on a closed-loop MAF draw-through system. I initially had the Bosch RV (recirc. valve) at the intake but later moved it back because even at 5psi, too much pressure was in the lines and it would occasionally pop a hose free. You can have both but you'd need to run a 1" hose all the way back into the pipe before the MAF. Not sure what happened to the 30# injectors, FMU, wiring extension harness (Eagle-day or JDS Porsche) used to offer a MAF male for which I used a male & female to make a 10.5' extension, but that's missing now. This was the car that the kit was experimented on before things solidified for the jigs, so future cars didn't have the same things like intercooler plumbing & such. That car did dozens of 12 second passes at San Antonio raceway back in 2005-2006- it was a hoot. Glad you're resurrecting it properly! Mark

One thing I noticed is that the MAF on an M28 engine is VERY sensitive to corrosion. I spent some time talking to Speake over in UK about the problem and he even sent me the MAF from his own car. Every few months on my own '85 S2 5 speed I had to clean the MAF plug with Deoxit or it would progressively get richer and richer. I almost choked when I saw those pins pull out of that plug.... That connector ~~HAS~~ to be changed!
This is an awesome project. You're making awesome progress even if some temp fixes need improvement. The new FMU and injectors should make a big difference. Love the Toyota lug nut bung I'm gonna steal that idea in the future. Can't wait for the next episode!
I had a '86 S; loved that car -- the grunt, the sound, the look. Loved it. I echo many commenters here -- you are very brave, and I wish I had half your talent with such temperamental machines. Only word of advice from me is to disable or replace the A/C in the back console, because they always erupt in a geyser at the worst possible moment. Can't wait to see what you do with this.
Still a solid unit... it's more fun when you do it yourself (and do it right). The parts for those are expensive (I owned one for 3 years, 2001-2003) and if you don't cut corners, it can get pricey real fast. Take your time, do it right, years of enjoyment. Those things absolutely FLY

The engines are over engineered and very tough, all the old rubber is a problem. Change any old fuel lines, make sure the timing belt has been serviced within the last 5 years. Hit the go pedal too soon in a corner and the rear end will lift, be careful.

Yup. Previous owners always seem dumb. Bought me a 92 accord 5 speed for 500 bucks. Owner said needed Trans. It only needed shift cables. But it had a few oil leaks. Axle was worn out and shaking bad and ALL the balljoints boots were torn and worn

My Brother-in-law plays with 928's, and he has several of them. You can buy them relatively cheap because they are hugely expensive to maintain. The parts are made by Porsche, what would you expect? He offered to sell me one of his, and said he would even come over and change the oil for me. When he told me how to change out the oil, I said no thanks...I'll keep my Honda Accord. 8:22 "cut the wires staggered". This "stagger" is the proper way because if you lose the insulation the odds of a fire are greatly reduced. It is said that an even ( not staggered) wiring connection with insulation coming off , caused the January 27, 1967 Apollo 1 fire.
As a 17 year old back in the late 1990's I had an opportunity to buy a 1977 Porsche 924. It ran and drove but I saw the writing on the wall. Best purchase I NEVER made! Cool car for a 17 year old but expensive to maintain.
The most fun car I ever owned was a 2001 996 C4, but almost every time something went wrong the engine and trans needed to be lowered out of the car. So a hundred dollar coolant tank with a pin hole leak was fifteen hundred to change out. Same with the alternator. I had five good years and then said goodbye. I don’t know enough about German cars to hold a wrench in my hand. Best Regards

When you found the cheap broken wastegate hose you were like, big quick exhale huhhhh.. Geeze whizz! OMG!! Reminds me of my wife, just sayin.... Anyway, the car is one of my all time favorites. Ohhh, the Hips on that ol'girl from behind. Then their is the sound. Reminds me of another one of my all time favorite cars being a well sorted 85 Capri RS 5.0 or Fox Body in general... Best of luck

You have to remember back in the day, 928s weren't thought of that highly.."not real Porsches". The only Porsche that got more scorn was the 924. That might explain the cut-rate job done on this car, as a previous owner didn't want to shell out big bucks for a good and professional repair. At least it's in good hands now.

If possible, it's best to put wideband sensors after the turbo. I've seen many claims that the backpressure before the turbo can influence readings. In my case it did seem good enough, though.
This is awesome! Some thoughts: GTS mirrors, that is an upgrade. GET rid of that stupid steering wheel, go stock! The pod has a leather cover, it is probably cracked underneath. You have an aftermarket front sway bar, it looks thicker than normal = understeer, look into the thicknesses of this part and the rear part. I know you know about the torn rack boot; 928 steering racks are available on the cheap from Zims in Dallas, $275 last time I checked [compare that to a Lamborghini or Ferrari rack for an '86 at around $3500, and those cars probably can't keep up with your 928~] For the rest of the parts you may need I HIGHLY recommend 928 International. There is no substitute for the professionalism of Mark Anderson's operation! Which brings up my next point: A 928 isn't an old Corvette or Mustang; It should be kept nice. By that I mean that there shouldn't be a hole in the console where der smokeagedunken [ashtray] used to be. Make sure you take as much care of the aesthetics of this car as you do the technical points. I drove an '85 S2 5 speed for over 19 years and it ALWAYS put a smile on my face. Especially when I took it to good restaurants/nightclubs with valet parking. On more than one occasion, they offered to valet park it for free so they could put it in front of the door to make the place look more glamorous. Not to mention all the attention you'll get at a Cars And Coffee event. All this fun and 13 second quarter mile times and I only paid $10,600 for this car when it was 14 years old...Heh heh! You're sitting on a winner with this car. Keep up the good work, GREAT VIDEO!
You get the most interesting stuff. What I was surprised by was how much the 928 amd 944 Turbo S's I think, are going for. But even the semi-clean 944's are selling for 13k. That is just crazy. A 944 Turbo was selling for 15,500 near me. A 928 with some UGLY orange leather with blue shift knob, blue stitching and a blue 12 o'clock stripe in the steering wheel (I'm in Florida, they were probably huge UF fans or my Alma Matta, Osceola High) but that car they wanted 26k for. A 15 year old boxter is cheaper.

Have some $$$, but I guarantee you, the 928 is a great car. Go with an S4 or higher. GT and GTS are almost impossible to find.

Those Porsche 928 are beast. V8 power with a turbo. Numerous guys would want that car.

Looks like that car spent a few nights down in Old Mexico. They were the only ones I can imagine that would do some hack job on something like this

Also change your heater core asap it was the only failure on my 86 928 (red with all body mouldings)

As an owner of multiple BMW’s as well, they really aren’t bad as long as you do the work yourself. Paying someone to do the labor is a monetary disaster 😂
