Made me smile. Very nice job Katie. You both seem like great people together. The wood was almost as beautiful as Katie. We'd like to see more of her tackling these kind of jobs! Cheers!
That was hilarious! So cool to see the interaction between you two. Watched it with my wife and laughed (in a good way). She always watch me work and enjoys it a lor. And how brave of Katie to comply with her husbands manic hobbies. Thumbs up Katie! We think you did darn good.
Great job Katie welcome to the wonderful world of wood turning. The next thing should be a bottle stopper they have less steps and are easy to get beautiful results.
She's fabulous for wanting to share your passion, and you rock for taking the time with her. If any other wives see this, you just made it harder for all the other husbands. :) Now: her next step is to realize that she can turn a number of pens and give them away as holiday gifts.
Great video guys, Mark Katie is a doll and seems like a lot of fun. I hope you guys get to spend a lot more time together in the shop. My wife likes to come out from time to time and do a few things with me too. Enjoy your pen Katie... You made it.
Your wife is adorable, Mark!! I really liked the up-close, slow-mo shots with the carbide tool. Katie is so right! The shaping is the best part. You two make a great pair. No Gomer from my seat.
My girlfriend always asked me to teach her with the lathe, but, I'm afraid because she never had used any power tool. After seeing this, I completely convinced to do that. Good job guys! This piece is very amazing. Thanks!
Your wife is cute AND funny! 😁 Poor girl looked so nervous at first. Girl I’m so proud of you! Don’t be scared of the power tools. Once we girls get past the initial fear, watch out! She may just take over your shop. New subscriber.
Very nice video. That is a gorgeous pen. I've watched a lot of lathe videos and this is the first time e I've seen a lady using the lathe. It's really nice to see that. Great job.
Note to Single Guys: The way she was smiling and respectful of the whole process and how she was able to joke around and be lighthearted is what us married guys have come to learn as "Marriage Material!". On a Side note, Mark you have a Beautiful family, Cherish them and don't allow other things in your life to cause you to lose sight of that. And Last but not least, Katie, You are an amazing woman, it shows in how you interact with your husband. He is a Very lucky man to have you in his life, but I think we can surely say you are a lucky woman to have him in yours as well. You've done a great job of making that pen, and I encourage you to familiarize yourself with the tools and the trade of woodworking, it is VERY rewarding and I think you just got a good taste with making that pen.
Great job Katie! A little fear is healthy at first. It makes you be careful around the power tools. I was afraid at first too and still have a healthy fear of carelessness but the results I get are so cool! Try it again. The next time you won't be so fearful.
This is hilarious. But in all seriousness it's kinda nice to see how a beautiful pen can emerge from an ordinary piece of wood. I guess we tend to forget the magic when we've been doing it awhile. Nice job.
Cute. That was really great watching someone who isn't well versed in power tools making something from scratch. We have a lathe at our makerspace. I've made a couple blanks, but haven't gotten farther than that - and yes, there are a lot of steps! Thanks for inspiring me to just do it.
aahhhh I remember they days 23 years ago when my wife and I were your age. Good video, she seemed to have fun and that's great that you have someone to enjoy your hobby with.
The sheer terror in her eyes as she uses the saw is worth watching the video, also seeing a very beautiful lady bring the beautiful shape of the pen is wonderful. She did an awesome job the pen and the stool are items the boys will want when they are older. If you ever become complacent around the saw just watch this video to remind yourself to be extremely careful. You have adorable kids and should have many more. Now Katy has the ideal Christmas present for family. The thumbs down are from people that don't think women can do work and they do not have a beautiful wife or a lathe.
Great job Katie, and you are right, the lathe is where the fun, creativity and action are. Fabulous looking pen, I love spalted wood. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Regards - Lynn
Great Video and that wood is beautiful to make a beautiful pen. Pass on my Congratulations to Katy (sorry if i have spelled your name wrong) for making her 1st pen, and for you being a good Teacher. Barry (ENG)
Maybe it is just my overanalyzing...but it is kinda funny how SOME girls are afraid of the power tools....but the idea of molding and shaping wood probably is more likened to pottery and there is a sensuousness about making the shape happen in real time. Awesome job guys!
Lots of fun! Great looking pen! I have done pens with both my girls. I have a small video up of the last one I did with my 9yr old. I have not been able to talk my wife in to trying yet.
Nice job on your pen. Your wifey is very sweet. My wifey likes to turn things on the lathe too, but she shoos me away. I’m surprised that you used such a large roughing gouge for your initial shaping? It does take time to acquire all the smaller gouges and chisels for pen work though. So I understand. Perhaps on your next pen glue up, you can try using Cyanoacrylate as the glue you use. It’s faster, no mixing, no mess, and is very easy to clean up. Again great job, I look forward to watching your Wifey getting a little more stick time with the bandsaw to improve her confidence.
You're exactly right, that gouge is overkill, but at the moment it's easier to use that than spend the money on a slightly smaller one. I have used Cyanoacrylate glue as well and it does a great job. I like the epoxy for a little extra working time.
Absolutely loved it, Mark! And your wife is a doll! I'm gonna mail you some pen blanks that I have sitting around. They're not doing me any good and it looks like you two might have some fun turning them into something. Really liked the vid, man. Keep it up!!
Katie you did a beautiful job on the pen! And you guys worked very well together. I will use this video as a training lesson for my grandson who wants turn a pen with grandpa. Any other tips you can give for teaching kids would be appreciated.... Since he is 9 I will prepare the blank on the bandsaw but with help I think he can do the rest. And I won't have a camera to deal with... I think I will have him do some practice turning on scraps. Any thoughts? Thanks again. Ron
Hey Ron, I think that is a great idea! Start with just some scraps of wood between centers and get him used to making very simple shapes. I'd say a 2x2 of whatever length you like would be good. That way it is big enough to see what he's doing, but not so big as to be intimidating. As the teacher, I think you should give instructions and corrections on how to be safe and not hurt your tools, other than that, try to stay out of it unless he asks for help or opinions. When teaching Katie it was really hard for me to avoid constantly saying "I would do it this way." Who cares if the first 1 or 2 or 10 don't look good, as long as it's safe, just let him have fun.
Nice job Katie. Welcome to the new world of pen turning (hear it addicting). Awesome she was willing to do the whole process and that pen turned out great. Mark she needs her own "shop" hat like you. lol Great work you two. Hope to see Katie in the shop some more.
It's always nice to see couples encouraging each other's work and being apart of it. Well done Katie.
Thank you!
Made me smile. Very nice job Katie. You both seem like great people together. The wood was almost as beautiful as Katie. We'd like to see more of her tackling these kind of jobs! Cheers!
Thanks Kevin! She was very nervous about how she appears on camera. I'll let her know she's going to have to make more videos with me now.
Her enthusiasm is infectious. Good for you teaching her what it takes!
She's just fun to be around isn't she?
It's obvious you two really enjoy each other's company. Miss Katie did a great job on her fist pen. Fun video!!
Thanks very much Tom!
That was hilarious! So cool to see the interaction between you two. Watched it with my wife and laughed (in a good way). She always watch me work and enjoys it a lor. And how brave of Katie to comply with her husbands manic hobbies. Thumbs up Katie! We think you did darn good.
Thanks Grey, glad you guys liked it!
Thanks to you and you wonderful wife you have inspired my wife to take up pen making. Just got her all the things she needs to get started!!
Katie, if that truly is the first pen you've made then congratulations on both design and craftsmanship. You seem to be a natural.
Great job Katie welcome to the wonderful world of wood turning. The next thing should be a bottle stopper they have less steps and are easy to get beautiful results.
That's a great idea James!
She's fabulous for wanting to share your passion, and you rock for taking the time with her.

Now: her next step is to realize that she can turn a number of pens and give them away as holiday gifts.
Thanks Paulina! We really appreciate that.
I love that you guys are working together.
One of the coolest woodworking videos I've seen on youtube. Well done Katie!
Thanks Scott! I'll let Katie know you said so.
its awesome to bring your family into something you enjoy so much. great video bud.
Thanks!
Great video guys, Mark Katie is a doll and seems like a lot of fun. I hope you guys get to spend a lot more time together in the shop. My wife likes to come out from time to time and do a few things with me too. Enjoy your pen Katie... You made it.
Thank you Mike, I am a lucky guy!
Your wife is adorable, Mark!! I really liked the up-close, slow-mo shots with the carbide tool. Katie is so right! The shaping is the best part. You two make a great pair. No Gomer from my seat.
Thanks Scott! She is a natural in front of the camera for sure.
My girlfriend always asked me to teach her with the lathe, but, I'm afraid because she never had used any power tool. After seeing this, I completely convinced to do that.
Good job guys! This piece is very amazing.
Thanks!
I'm glad we could help inspire you! That's what we are here for, demystify the process and get people motivated!
Your wife is cute AND funny! 😁 Poor girl looked so nervous at first. Girl I’m so proud of you! Don’t be scared of the power tools. Once we girls get past the initial fear, watch out! She may just take over your shop. New subscriber.
Welcome aboard! I'll let her know what you said!
She's a real sweetheart, you're a lucky man.
Thanks Boris, I'm well aware!
Very nice video. That is a gorgeous pen. I've watched a lot of lathe videos and this is the first time e I've seen a lady using the lathe. It's really nice to see that. Great job.
Very awesome. I think it is great that your wife takes an interest in what you do and wants to learn. Katie, that pen is beautiful!
Note to Single Guys: The way she was smiling and respectful of the whole process and how she was able to joke around and be lighthearted is what us married guys have come to learn as "Marriage Material!".

The whole time I was smiling, you two are great and genuine...
Thank you!
Great video. Love the sheer bandsaw terror @ 0:32 ! LOL #HelditLikeAGomer classic!
Great job Katie! A little fear is healthy at first. It makes you be careful around the power tools. I was afraid at first too and still have a healthy fear of carelessness but the results I get are so cool! Try it again. The next time you won't be so fearful.
Good advice Judy - I'll tell her that!
Hi Gun & Katie So nice to see a wife have a go at woodworking and be successful well done. Next challenge chest of drawers lol. Keep going Katie.
She keeps talking about building a bed. I'm starting to think she doesn't mean that I will be doing it!
Great fun watching you both. My girlfriend doesn't even step into my workshop to give me a cup of tea, never mind trying to make something!
This had me smiling like a loon. You're wife is enchanting.
Thanks Carl! She was afraid she looked dumb of camera - I told her she couldn't be more wrong.
I hope my wife will be as interessted in my hobby as she does.
Best teacher ;)
@2:00 "I so excited!" favourite line haha. Great video, and congrats on welcoming another turner into the pen world :)
Thanks Adam!

Love the how-to video, Katie, the pen turned out great. I hope to visit and get to play in the shop, too. But Mark, no filming.

Good job, Katie!!
Nice work, and I just have to add; You two have to be the cutest, most adorable couple on the internet. Best of everything to y'all. :-)
Maybe it is just my overanalyzing...but it is kinda funny how SOME girls are afraid of the power tools....but the idea of molding and shaping wood probably is more likened to pottery and there is a sensuousness about making the shape happen in real time.
Awesome job guys!
I'd just like to say, your wife has talked my wife into woodworking with me! Thank you for this! Amazing video!!
That's great James, I', glad we could help!
Ya'll keep doing this stuff together. I'm still trying to get my wife out to my shop.
Katie keeps getting more and more involved... show her videos to your wife and maybe that will help encourage her!
Great video once again! Great tip on using the drill press in lieu of a pen vise.
Thanks!
I SO EXCITED! 🤣
So cute seeing you both interact with a common interest. Did she get addicted to turning? She did very well for a first timer!
She very much enjoyed it and wants to do it again. But it's hard to be addicted when you're as busy as she is!
Nice and amazing work. Thank you for your painstaking work more grease to your elbow. My regard to your wife.
You're treading dangerous waters... she may love the shop so much, you'll never get to use your lathe again! LOL
If that's the case I'll just have to buy another one!
that's a great video. She did a great job
Thanks Kevin, I'll let her know!
What a great video! Good job guys
Awesome couple, love your channel!
Thanks!
Lots of fun! Great looking pen! I have done pens with both my girls. I have a small video up of the last one I did with my 9yr old. I have not been able to talk my wife in to trying yet.

Nice hand writing!!

Bravo de france! Vous êtes génial!

Beautiful pen! Well done
Thanks!
Nice job, she did great---
Thanks!
I laughed when I heard "shinyyy" from Moana.
"I'm too shiny. Watch me dazzle like a diamond in the rough."
Haha, with a two and a four year old, it's hard to keep kids movies from creeping in to every day life!
Thank you for another great video :)
Is your sled riding in the miter track?
Getting ready to teach my Daughter and GF, will be showing them your video. She did awesome.
Nice job Katie. Welcome to the new world of pen turning (hear it addicting). Awesome she was willing to do the whole process and that pen turned out great. Mark she needs her own "shop" hat like you. lol Great work you two. Hope to see Katie in the shop some more.
Thanks Ron! Hopefully this will just wet her appetite for woodworking!
Yeah think it will especially if you make the blanks for her :D
