Amazingly I woke up with the words of this song ringing in my spirit. I searched it on TH-cam and here I am. I think the universe is sending this message to America and the world right now in these times❤️
Thanks for doing the heavy lifting Mark! They called this song for church tomorrow morning and you just saved us a lot of time figuring out which part was which.
Mark, wonderful song and yes, the words "let's get together" are just as relevant today as they were in the 60's. Thanks for sharing this with us today.
Thank you so much! I always imagine these lovely guitar lines as being complex and difficult. And then someone like you shows me that, no, it's actually pretty easy! Thanks for demystifying . . .
This song was written by Dino Valenti, the vocal leader of Quicksilver, Dino never received a cent in royalties, as he had to sell his songs, pay legal fees, etc., as he was arrested for possession of marijuana, used the stage name Chet Powers, that was the madness of the sixties Big Dino who wrote the song "what about me"
I always loved this song . Times were different in those days. Young people wanted a change from what was going on in their country. This song and some from others , perhaps the Beatles did it the best but this song is precious.
I love the song too. I heard Jimmy Dale Gilmour and Dave Alvin do it recently. Great version. Catch their show if it's near you. Best show I've seen all year - and I see a bunch! And yes, we can use the message today.
I was drafted for vocals by our neighborhood band (of 'old farts') to list 5 songs I'd love to sing. This is one of them. I listened to the karaoke and then found this. Makes me want to revisit guitar. Thanks for this with its (and your) timely message.
Thanks! Yes, it kind of bums me out that I did this video 6 years ago and the message is still timely. But yes, keep on keeping on and spread the message brother. Thanks for listening!
It's not dumb or funny Mark because I totally agree. Iwas born in '56 and went through the hippie era when everyone was into love and peace. Then fast forward to today and it's totally opposite but I'm still wishing I was back in that time. I think that's why I enjoy guitar so much because I can play something like this and for awhile go back in time. Peace Mark and thanks 👍🙏.
He had a fantastic voice...comparable to Steve Marriot......Check this out....QMS live 12/28/1975 - Winterland SF....The band jams for about three minutes ...Dino comes in about 3:10 and kicks ass
Thank you for taking on this peaceful 60's classic. Would love to see some of the other slower, dreamy 60s / 70s songs like Jefferson Airplane / Jefferson Starship's "D.C.B.A.-25" and "Miracles" and something like "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow" from Strawberry Alarm Clock.
Thanks Mark! Really need this song today so I’m going to learn it. Hope you’re staying safe and hope we’re all doing what we can to support each other.
uncle Mark, your easy way and great teaching method rocks!! I saw one of your videos, you had a beard going, looking good bro. I'm gonna get out my capo and learn this, cheers Mark
The capo opened my world to an entire new dimension along with open tunings, G, D and open E to start with. Fire and Rain, Thick as a Brick, Here Comes the Sun, All capoed.
Yep. And try playing bluegrass without it. You can do it, but you don't get that ringing tone. There should be no shame in it, yet I find some players look down on those who use one. Heck, even Pete Townshend used the capo liberally!
Thank you for this! Can you explain if I needed to play the song with capo on 2nd fret, where would the capo go to do the opening part first, then move capo down to 2nd fret to sing the song and what chord would start off? (you start off in A) Let me know when you have time-thank you
I used some of what you showed us and some of my own playing to fit my style. It does sound good with a capo, but I just pick the first 4 strings (E-A -D-G) on 7th fret area down to 5th fret, then par D with F# on E to reg E to A, then full D-E-A, try it, going to sing it now at our next coffeehouse!
love this tune...has a Rain Song vibe on the guitar with those upward strums on those pretty chords, wonder if Pagey didn't think so too? thanks for sharing this one!
Wow, this made me wonder, well ,what if you just tune the top E string up a wholestep to an F#?.. and it works great! You can do both parts quite easily then-adding the first finger as you slide up and down... the rest of the chords work well with this approach too if you keep the adjustment in mind....thanks for the inspiration!
This is great info, but I feel like it's a little bit incomplete? With capo, you demonstrate what 1 guitar does, but only for part of the song. What would be amazing is if you could demonstrate what both guitars do throughout the entire song so that a band that wanted to perform this live with 2 guitarists would have a great starting point.
I really like your instructionals, and I know I am being picky, but what about the lead guitar SOLo section of this song, that part needs to be explained!?
Hi David. It's always okay to ask. I didn't do it, because I wanted to publish what I was able to record in the time I have. I do lots of requests and I usually have to make some choices. I usually choose based upon a number of factors. I also don't like to do "monster videos" that take hours to record, hours to edit and then are very long. That said, I'm happy to put the solo to this song on my to-do list. The second half of the solo is quite nice.
Why would you take off the capo mid-song? Don’t you need it on for the full song? I recall seeing other ppl playing this song without removing the capo mid-song.
You don't take it off mid song. I'm showing the two different guitar parts from the song; one part is with a capo, one is without. There are other ways to play this. (retune one guitar, arrange both parts to be played on one guitar, ignore the second guitar part, etc.), thus other things that other players may choose to do. I'm not certain of their motivations to do so. I decided to do what I think is done on the song, though I could be wrong, but it sounds pretty close to me. But yeah, to reiterate, you don't take the capo off mid song. I'm playing two parts, like in the demo I do at the beginning. Those guitars, though they look the same, are playing different things.
True a capo isn't necessary for this song. But I beg to differ on the "cult soul purpose" for marketing capos (I think you meant "sole"). Getting the ringing sound of open chords whether it's bluegrass or a song like "The Real Me" (The Who) is important. And being able to accommodate a singer's vocal range when doing so is even more important. Plenty of non-bluegrass "real musicians" use them in innovative ways. Check out Phil Keaggy if you don't believe me.
the 2nd part of my comment was kind of a joke, most people can't play 2 guitars simultaneous, it can be difficult to find another player (in real life) who knows the song and both parts @@MarkZabel
Hahaha, I was "too good" for a capo for 30yrs. Totally stupid of me, been using one for the last 15 and I use it a lot. Great message about loving one another, another thing I don't do enough. Stupid human.
Amazingly I woke up with the words of this song ringing in my spirit. I searched it on TH-cam and here I am. I think the universe is sending this message to America and the world right now in these times❤️
I really hope so!
One of the most Beautifully written songs - for my taste - in history.
Blessed are the Peacemakers...
Mark, your spot on about the anger in America! This Classic Song should be a National Theme! Thank you Mark, great job! Musician USA
Thanks so much Thom. We've got to find a way to let or go out b we'll be consumed by it. Take care of yourself and thanks for the kind words!
Such a beautiful old classic... thanks for breaking it down Mark. And YES, the world needs to heed this Songs message these days!
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for doing the heavy lifting Mark! They called this song for church tomorrow morning and you just saved us a lot of time figuring out which part was which.
That's the idea. Plus, just playing great music is fun. Have a ball with it!
Mark, wonderful song and yes, the words "let's get together" are just as relevant today as they were in the 60's. Thanks for sharing this with us today.
Thanks Zane. I agree, great song and it's definitely time for us to all "get together" again.
I agree , the sound of the guitar is beautiful .
Thank you so much! I always imagine these lovely guitar lines as being complex and difficult. And then someone like you shows me that, no, it's actually pretty easy! Thanks for demystifying . . .
Glad I could help!
nice with the upper triads....alot different than we played it in library park in 1973!!!!
Im here in June 2020 and things have gone to crap. This songs message is really needed today so here I am working it up.
I hear you man! We need more "smiling on our brothers" (and sisters too) ... Right now!
Glad I could help in a small way! Good luck.
This song was written by Dino Valenti, the vocal leader of Quicksilver, Dino never received a cent in royalties, as he had to sell his songs, pay legal fees, etc., as he was arrested for possession of marijuana, used the stage name Chet Powers, that was the madness of the sixties Big Dino who wrote the song "what about me"
Thanks for the info.
Thanks a lot Mark. A great tutorial, as always. And I'm totally with you about the sentiment of the song. Peace brother.
Thanks George. Peace be with you also.

Just heard this on 88.5 WXPN in Philadelphia and had to learn it. Great start to a Monday morning!
Rock on!
It is a great song, witha great message, thanks for the lesson.
Yeah, they don't make 'em like this any more.
Hey Mark, timeless classic!! , stirring memories, maybe too many !! ? nice presentation as always, catch up with you soon.Jay.
Thanks Jay. I'm a little young for this one, but I think I know what you mean! :)
It's not dumb or funny Mark because I totally agree. Iwas born in '56 and went through the hippie era when everyone was into love and peace. Then fast forward to today and it's totally opposite but I'm still wishing I was back in that time. My pleasure. Glad this resonated with you.
Thanks wanted to learn that song best song in history
My pleasure. Yes, it's a great one!
Dino Valenti was such a Bay Area force in the 60's scene!
Very cool to know. I'll read up on it, as it was a bit before my time.
Yes he was. he did a lot of great songs with Quicksilver Messenger Service.
He had a fantastic voice...comparable to Steve Marriot......Check this out....QMS live 12/28/1975 - Winterland SF....The band jams for about three minutes ...Dino comes in about 3:10 and kicks ass

Thanks Mark! Really need this song today so I’m going to learn it. Hope you’re staying safe and hope we’re all doing what we can to support each other.
You said it Kevin! Glad you enjoyed this. Take care.
What you said is exactly why I want to learn this. Respect for saying it!
Thanks so much!!
Great song! one of my all time favorites. Thanks Mark
The vocals are where the real magic happens in this song, but the arrangement is pretty nice too. Thanks for watching!
Mark, that chord is just magic, great video! Thanks
Great tune and great sentiments. Thanks for all of your lessons. I have learned a lot from you.
Thanks Edward. It's always good to hear such a gratifying comment. I really appreciate the kind feedback.

What a great and beautiful song. So glad I found someone teaching it. I subscribed.

I'll put it on my to-do list.
i'm here for that beautiful open chord THX
My pleasure. It *IS* beautiful!

Good point, spread the love and sunshine 🌞
Absolutely!
YESSSSS! Thank you!❤️❤️❤️😎
Any time!
By Dino Valenti (QSM voice) aka Chet Powers
Thanks for sharing 😃🤩💯
My pleasure.
love this tune...has a Rain Song vibe on the guitar with those upward strums on those pretty chords, wonder if Pagey didn't think so too? thanks for sharing this one!
It *does* have that vibe, doesn't it? Never thought of it that way, but it works. Thanks!
You mean Jimmy Page...the greatest guitarist/thief that ever lived...?.....ah aha....I couldn't resist....Love JP and LZ
I think we need this song now also Mark???? Thanks for another super lesson And have a Great 4th of july
Thanks! You too! And yes, we need it now and always.
I play this song in G and do the riff without the capo. Thanks for the online lesson.
Yep, that's another good way.
Wow, this made me wonder, well ,what if you just tune the top E string up a wholestep to an F#?.. and it works great! Still waiting for the solo to

Howdy. May I ask what pickups you have in your guitar? I have the same guitar with stock ceramic Humbuckers that I want to change out. Thank you
I think they're Guitarfetish Surf 90s. Sold the guitar several years ago.
Have you tabbed out the rest of the song in another video?
No Mike, I haven't.
1st part ... set your camera so you can see the pick hand would help immensely
Thanks for the feedback.

but wait ,,,,,,what happens on the chorus ,the d-e-a move ,,,with the capo ? this is a fantastic song !
There are 2 guitars. The natural chords are C, D, G. The guitar with the capo would play the D, E, and A shapes.
Far out, man!
Groovy!
Thanks Mark. Subbed
Thanks!!
“ Most people don’t know The Kingston Trio wrote and recorded this first.”
Actually, mine is the AWD-83. Double cutaway - looks more Strat like.
Right on
I hear you brother!
I don't hate capo's but no matter which guitar I use I always have to re-tune when I put a capo on or take one off. Pain in the *&$
I find I need to play around with the angle of the capo - especially if I use it on an electric.
Shubb capo stays in tune
how do i download the tab
Click on the link in the video description and follow the directions. You may need to click a menu symbol - depending on your browser and device.
Nice! Please do a lesson on the remainder of the song. Thank you!
I'll put that on the list of songs to do. Thanks for watching!
don't see the tabs
Okay. They're linked in the description.
capo is not necessary for this song. he made it pretty clear, bluegrass is a cult soul purpose for marketing capos

@@mikepadan6538 Got it!
I have several capos :-)
!!! That's how you do it!!
There’s no capo on this song - watch Jessie play it!
Okay
Jessie did a remake of the song without the iconic intro(probably played by the other guitarist in the young bloods)
So much easier with the capo! Thanks!
That's for sure - much easier! Thanks for watching! BTW, that was one windy day at Baldwin Lake!! (I fish quite a bit too.)
Good, intro territorial pissing Nirvana
Hahaha, I was "too good" for a capo for 30yrs. Totally stupid of me, been using one for the last 15 and I use it a lot. Great message about loving one another, another thing I don't do enough. Stupid human.
