No, she did not speak German. The few German roles she sang in her early career were in Italian. She spoke English, but no other language other than Italian. Tebaldi did not speak French. The opera singer was reluctant to sing in any language other than Italian, believing that French was too nasal. She was afraid of compromising the beauty of her voice in her native tongue. Later in her career she recorded one or two songs in Spanish (Granada, Estrellita) because Spanish is a close cousin of Italian. th-cam.com/video/uFvvYEzeqFg/w-d-xo.html
@@BellaFirenze It is obvious that she couldn’t speak German but the first interview in the video gives the impression that she could, however, understand German. One can understand a language and at the same time be unable to speak it.

From the first interview it appears as if Tebaldi could understand German but couldn’t respond in the language. Is that correct?

Yeaah, she seems to react in real time to some phrases... I pretty sure to have read that her father was german descendent.

@@nigihayami6 That was my impression too, that she was reacting/responding in real time to what the interviewer was telling or asking her in German.
@@doGreatartistsgrowontreesyou're right! Tebaldi could understands German and France language.
