Fantastic - and what an attraction this could be, if still there.

it's from a larger reel of amateur film , obviously in those days there was only a limited amount of film on the reels, so things were filmed briefly , unlike today with endless sized memory cards.
but its a great piece of film from an era I would love to have seen for myself.

This is great quality. I must look at those old railway maps again that I saved last year. Not all the routes have been concerted into cycle paths. Lol.

I remember St.Lawrence Station and railway line from my boyhood - such a shame it is no longer running - the tourists of today, would love it!

The first shot is at St Lawrence and the rest of the film is Ventnor West (previously Ventnor Town), closed in 1952.

Wonderful - thanks for sharing. A couple days ago I saw a video of the fantastic restoration the IoW Rly have done on a 2-coach 4-wheel coach push and pull set. It looks like this has a P&P coach on the end as it leaves VW. I wonder if it could be used as a P&P with all four coaches?

The locomotive is definitely not W13"Carisbrooke'' as the sandboxes are the wrong type. It could be W11 "Newport" still operational today on the IOW Steam Railway

It's definitely St Lawrence in the opening sequence. The rest is at Ventnor West. Film is as rare as hens teeth, the branch closed in 1952. The engine is a class A1X 0-6-0t. I can't be sure but I think the engine is number W13 Carisbrooke. The scene is rarer still in that push-pull working was introduced in 1928 except on rare occasions and this seems to be one of them with the engine running round at Ventnor West. In the film the Driver appears to have retrieved the train staff from the signal box (which was unmanned since the change in operation). The 4-wheel carriages are ex-Isle of Wight Central Railway stock..

Hi, I'm a student at the Isle of Wight College studying Media, currently creating a mini documentary relating to the Island's railway history. I was wondering if we could potentially use some of the footage please? It would not be for profit in anyway and may only appear on college social media. Many thanks in advance.

    Ventnor West?
That's more St Lawrence than Ventnor if you ask me..

the first few seconds are st Lawrence because of the huge slope opposite the platform. I think the rest of the film most probably is ventnor west

That's right. To the left of the signal was a water tank. The signal box is the building on the right.

      +ISLE OF WIGHT ARCHIVE
      I'm no expert...
      Just an uneducated guess..
      I'd say both..
Certainly looks like St Lawrence at the beginning..
