He was a man without purpose.
He found that purpose but broke a vow tied to it, and as a result felts lost.
Alicent and the boys gave him a purpose again.

You can see how Cole feels like a father who failed his kid. I genuinely think that Aegon could have turned different if he was disciplined and pushed to be better without being belittled, some kids need that one person to believe in them until they gain their own self-confidence. Out of the kids we've seen, Helaena is the only decent one and she has to suffer for her family's sins. Alicent only showed kindness to her daughter and now her sons have serious issues. The way Alicent always treated him might also be the reason for Aemond's bullying. She transfers her shame and anger onto Aegon who then humiliates Aemond.

The last half of this episode was pure tragedy. If you read in advance, you knew both Aegon and Sunfyre were about fly to their doom after their little bonding moment, because his mother, the very person who encouraged him to take the throne in the first place, admitted she had no faith in him. And then hearing Sunfyre, a beautiful dragon, cry out in pain as he was savaged and torn from the sky, was terrible. He had no business going up against a war-hardened dragon like Meleys. Then there was Rhaenys’ death, softened at least as she accepted it with grace. You could tell in hers and Meleys’ eyes before they strafed back around for Vhagar that she knew she was about to die. And ofc, there was Ser Criston walking through a graveyard of the burning dead, akin to walking through nuclear fallout, which is essentially the consequence dragon warfare presents. In no way could either side truly call this a victory. Amazing episode, can’t wait to see more.

Sunfyre turned on his wounded belly side so that he doesn't crush Aegon under his heavy weight and he coiled him around so what would stop him from razing Aemond? Aemond is stupid but I don't believe he is that dumb to try to kill someone who is protected by a dragon.

I get why some people read this as Aemond mercy-killing, but that doesn't make any sense. We see Aemond the entire time, after he stops by the dagger he never moves back or forth. Given the camera pan to Sunfyre's neck curled around Aegon I think it safe to say Aemond is anywhere from 6-10 metres away from Aegon, so if that weird sword movement is supposed to be Aemond stabbing down on Aegon his one remaining eye is obviously causing him problems.
Well why is Aemond carrying his sword out? Cause it's a battle? Cause he's that sort of paranoid always at the ready sort of warrior? Well, why the movement down? To begin the action he finishes after Cole shouts his name. Putting the sword in its hilt. Why? So he can examine the dagger he's standing in front of. I don't even think he was trying to kill Aegon earlier, I just think he values defeating enemies over aiding allies, which the show is telling us backfires by harming your allies, the inverse of Rhaenyra being kind to Mysaria which then saves her life.

@@vishnujain7645 Insensitivity doesn’t necessarily mean that anyone deserves to be a victim of manipulation and used by their family members for political gain simply because of the circumstance of their birth. Also, you’re calling the guy who flew into battle against a much larger, far more battle-hardened dragon a coward? You sure you’re not thinking of Joffrey? Aegon’s reckless no doubt, but a coward he is not. And he DEFINITELY did not let go of his self-loathing. The whole reason he went off to fight at Rook’s Rest in the first place was because his entire council, his own brother and mother, saw him as a weak King. Not only that, but also because of all the doubt he held that not only he was the rightful King of Westeros, but whether he *deserved* to be, a doubt that’s been with him his entire life but completely boiled over in this episode. Fact is, if Aegon had a family that loved him more than the crown he would inherit, he’d have turned out better. Dude was a victim of the Hightower’s ambitions, plain and simple.
