I grew up in Edmonton in the '70s and '80s.
There was a special time in the early '80s when EVERY boy in my junior high gleefully reenacted Bob and Doug episodes on Monday mornings that we'd watched on Friday night.
And then SCTV got Americanized, and something pure, funny and Canadian got spoiled.

Hollywood rides on our backs like a parasite and spoils everything it touches. Real Americans loved the true Canadian culture, our neighbors to the North. SCTV was the funniest thing I ever saw, especially the fake commercials.

Rush is an amazing band, both lyrically and musically. Their drummer, Neil Peart, unfortunately passed away due to illness a few years ago. He was called The Professor because he wrote most of Rush’s lyrics.

@YT_MertCan - Rush was inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame and deservedly so. Neil Peart was considered one of it not THE best rock drummer of all time and he was usually their lyricist. Losing his wife and daughter tragically he took a year long motorcycle journey and wrote a book about how to deal with grief. A brilliant man. Geddy (Gary) Lee is an absolutely amazing bassist. When he played guitar or keyboards he would play bass with his feet using a synthesizer. Alex Lifeson was an amazing guitarist. Three men produced the sound of a dozen. They had a worldwide following. When inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame Alex's speech consisted of @ 2 minutes of "blah, blah, blah" mocking the banality of acceptance speeches. They were all comical guys. On stage they would have tons of silly props like washing machines and rubber chickens. I'm not a fan of heavy stuff but their virtuosity was magnetic.

Both songs got good air play when released, and both are my playlists. As for Geddy Lee and Rush, they were a Canadian powerhouse group with a library of music that I think you will enjoy exploring. Songs that come to mind for you to start with are, Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, Subdivisions. Something else you might enjoy from the era of Great White North, and you should watch the documentary of it's production as well as listen to the song is Tears are not Enough by Northern Lights. They used to sneak into "Yes" concerts they were too young to get into. But - in a weird twist of fate - it was Geddy Lee who inducted "Yes" into the R&R Hall of Fame - and took the late Chris Squires' place on stage when they played "Roundabout" at the Awards night. there are 2 episodes of SCTV that are full-length Bob & Doug episodes...one is called "The Great White North Palace" where Guy Cabellero, the manager of the SCTV station tries to capitalize on the McKenzie's popularity by giving them a prime time special & they get Tony Bennett to guest star...you can imagine what happens when things go downhill, since Bob & Doug can barely put together a 2-minute show and now have to pull off a full special...the second full Bob & Doug episode is one where they are struggling to find a good topic for their show & wind up getting an interview with Canadian musician Ian Thomas (Dave's younger brother) Both are great episodes because it expands the characters beyond their 2-minute segments & you get to see them interact with other characters in the SCTV Universe...definitely worth watching!!!

Getty Lee one of the best vocals in Rock! Rush rules Canadian music. Getty was out of his comfort zone when it came to comedy. However he loved them so much he agreed to do the record.

I could watch your reactions to Getty singing, a hundred times over!! THAT was the epitome of SHOCK and AWE reaction!! Yes, Rush was an amazing band in their time, and still remain as part of Canadian radio content on a daily basis.

The look on your face when Geddy started singing 😲😲 was hilarious.
As a life long Rush fan I highly recommend jumping into the Rush rabbit hole. You won't be sorry!! 🤘😎🤘 (Geddy's amazing vocals are just the tip of the iceberg!)
The Rush boys are really more 'anti' rock stars. They are adorably awkward guys with a great sense of humor, who don't take themselves too seriously. (They frequently used the 3 Stooges theme music when coming on stage.)
    Where to start? 🤔
Spirit of Radio, Fly by Night, and Tom Sawyer. Then we can get into some of the really good stuff! 😉

I always thought that the song "Take Off" would be great in a TV commercial promoting tourism in Canada. "Take off to the Great White North!"

Rush is often regarded as one of the most talented band of all time. Geddy Lee was consistently regarded as one of if not the best Bassist in Rock and the same can be said for Drummer and Lyricist Neil Peart (pronounced Pea-rt) who was along with Jon Bonham of Led Zeppelin considered the greatest rock drummer ever. All three members of the band were great friends and kept the same lineup from 1975 up until 2020 when Neil Peart died of brain cancer RIP. I recommend you watch the video "Dinner With Rush" which is pretty funny

If you like Bob & Doug, you should check out their movie, Strange Brew.
And for more Geddy Lee, check out Rush's "Tom Sawyer". It's a jam!

And what can I say about Geddy Lee and Rush. Not just Canadian icons but international icons of that era of music. They’re not just musicians.. they’re artists . The talent is ridiculous. Tom Sawyer is my favourite song. Make sure you listen with really good headphones and crank the volume for the true experience!

Rush is one of the best ever prog rock bands and with only 3 members they are deemed to have the most talented musicians in one band. Each one is at or near the top of their perspective playing of their instruments. They inspired some of the best bands to have come after them. Their earlier music (pre-1980) is epic. Their later music is popular and catchy. They are also just really nice people.
Epic songs: 2112, Xanadu, La Villa Strangiato, Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage
Popular songs: Closer to the Heart, The Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, YYZ, Limelight and many more.

So, this is what I know about the great white north. Ian Thomas, Dave Thomas's brother, is a Canadian musician. Every boxing day, his sound guy, Leo, would have a party. Ian would entertain us with his version of the quintessential Canadian guy. His brother thought it was funny, and it ended up on SCTV. Ironically, They released an album in 1981, which did better than any of Ian's 11 albums. Fun Story. Canadian musicians know you never make it in Canada unless you make it somewhere else. Ian told me this story, which explains it all. He went on a concert tour in Germany. At customs, the woman checked a box of his CDs. She pulled out one, she looked at the cover, looked at Ian, and then back at the cover. "OH MY GOTT! You're Ian Thomas. I have all your albums!" He gave her a CD and signed it. Coming back to Canada, he had some CDs left over. When stopped at customs, the woman pulled out one of his CDs. She pulled out one, she looked at the cover, looked at Ian, and then back at the cover. She put her hands on her hips. "Am I supposed to know you?"
