I've never kept wild Discus. Seen them for sale..some just about the size of a dinner plate. Biggest Discus I ever saw. I hope you one day can up to an even larger tank..I like the mix and wonder if those new colorful Severums would do with the Uarus and Discus? I've bred Discus...hard as heck to raise the fry. I never did hit on the right food. I've seen King of DYI Discus breeders..typical set up..bare tank. These fish are so prone to infections in tanks with substrate. Congrats you got very healthy fish!
Stan TheObserver the problem is: people over think discus, over feed discus, believe the hype about discus, raise them as if all that extra stuff is necessary and use way too much tarrestrial food on them. However, wilds are more hardy than domestics. Beef heart fowls water really bad and often carries pathogens and doesn't provide much of any thing else, but fat and some protein, unless it's from a grass feed bovine. Black Worms are loaded with bacteria abs things of the sort many times, unless really cleaned every day or are the freeze dried kind. Then sometimes, we clean the water too much and never let them build an immune system that can handle anything. That's why once wild discus are quarantined and converted properly, they are more hardy than most domestic discus. I keep wild discus, wild uaru, wild satanoperca, wild pleco's, and wild angels in city tap water with no problems and even miss water changes at times and my fish do quite well. All they require is clean water with a weekly water change in an established tank being fed good food with a variety. Should one or some pick up a disease, most meds should not hurt them. I've even salted my discus tanks with aquarium salt and epsom salt with no problems. Now baby discus or raising Young Justice on the other hand, you should do a 25% water change every 48 hours but you don't have to load them with live worms and beef heart; they can eat pellets, flakes, blood worms and brine shrimp just fine, with occasional black worms and beef heart, better yet freeze dried beef heart and black worms. Then things are less complicated and we can enjoy our fish and the hobby. Stable ph is the most important thing. If you should get into them again, get them from Han's Discus or Chicago Discus who's fish are already in hard city tap and actually breed in tap. If you want quality wilds, get them from Wattleys Discus whose fish are in city tap eat regularly fish food and are very healthy.
