How I miss Italy. Went to school in Perugia, met my relatives, walked miles on cobblestone streets, ate the best food in the world, and never gained an ounce. When I returned to the US, it felt so lonely... no groups of Nonnas gossiping on the steps, no people arguing and gesturing., nobody sauntering with the sole purpose to enjoy life. Just cars and empty sidewalks.

NEVER say "ciao" to strangers!!! It is an informal greeting used among friends only. It is considered rude, especially to the older folks.
Say Buona Sera -"SEHR ah" or Buona Serata. "Serh AH ta." The accent changes with the addition of a syllable. If that's too much, just say Salve, "SAL veh" accent on the Sal.

I visited Salerno in March, I'm not a tourist, I was there for family reasons, and I am very disheartened to see the cruise monster barges are now docking there. @@juahahahaI was a kid of 11 when my mom and I visited Bari in 1958. We were there to visit an uncle who was in a retirement home for priests in Bisceglie and mom thought Bari would be better to stay as we visited him every day. We stayed right on the Lungomare. I think the hotel was called the Savoia. There was a beautiful dining terrace on the first (second for americans) floor and our waiter doted on me. Back then, a lot more Italians spoke English so even tho my mom was fluent and I was learning, he liked to practice because he had been a POW in Texas and always joked that he wanted to be a cowboy! 😂😂 The beach was right across the boulevard and was still clean, wide and uncrowded. I liked it very much and I love the Pugliese. In fact, I have uncovered some evidence that my family may have originated in Puglia but we are well established in Campania for 400 years. However, there was a collateral ancestor who was a high Church official in Gravina and I was surprised to find he had been born there. Everyone assumes he had grown up in the family seat and was assigned to Gravina. The Greek origins of my name are another clue but it bears more investigation.
