Imagine Ob Nixilis blood pressure: -gets a spark and becomes a demon -gets trapped on Zendikar for messing with Nahiri -years later goes to a plot to sabotage the war against the eldrazi to regain his spark -gains his spark back -gets baited by Bolas on Ravnica -gets trapped on Ravnica despite having a spark -frees himself -goes to Capenna -pissess off five mafia families -loses the spark once again while on the plane with said mafia families He might be a baddie... but the man really cannot catch a breath... You know, I'm happy to scale down to plane-limited threats... between the last few years in MtG and the majority of modern cinema, I was really starting to feel this "multiversal gigantic crossover threat" fatigue.
That and the need of MtG to rush the history in one set. Not all "events" need a full block - three sets - but two allow better timing and help mechanics have support.
Teferi losing his spark felt kinda bad. Yes, he finally got Zhalfir back so it’s unlikely he would leave, but I’ll miss seeing him pop-up from place to place to help.
Teferi could pop up on other planes, judging by how the story ended for Chandra/Nissa since they walked off through a portal left behind by Realmbreaker to go find Zendikar together (at least if im remembering correctly).
So was Garruk sleeping the whole time? Lol I think Karn and Teferi losing their spark is kind of stupid. But at the same time allows us to see how tough Teferi is without his spark. But Karn having a spark added something special to his story and of who he is and without it just doesn't feel right.
Yeah, it's lazy. They didn't remove their sparks for writing or lore purposes, not for character development. They did it so they could sell their characters as commanders. It really doesn't make sense from a lore perspective.

I'm fine to an extent about some characters losing their spark, but if they wanted to clean house and sell commanders, clean the lesser used ones but make them badass legendary for your commander format so that they have a new identity that ppl can still enjoy
I'm glad they pruned down the number of planeswalkers. There were too many and a lot of them weren't really very good characters. I would like to see more Sorin content that actually shows what he is capable of. For being one of the oldest planeswalkers aside from Bolas and Ugin, he always seems very underpowered, when he should be able to pretty much annihilate most other beings with a gesture.
It would piss off Nahiri so much if she ever learned Sorin kept his spark. I think she would just lose it totally if he popped over to Zendikar, found her, said "Heard you lost your spark." And then just leaves the plane right in front of her.
she'd deserve a visit from Sorin, who'd just rub it in harder how much she fucked up. I personally really disliked how WotC handled the Sorin-Nahiri storyline, or rather the lack of any real story. there never was any real resolution to their conflict which sucks.
I love that Nahiri didn't even lose her spark to the pruning. She's such a disaster and I love that she keeps getting damnation arcs. I can see her freeing Bolas at some point for War of the Spark 2: Electric Boogaloo.
I'm happy Liliana wasn't caught up in all of this. Also thrilled we won't be seeing Teferi as a Planeswalker anymore. He's the most annoying Planeswalker, and usually run by the most annoying players - control freaks who enjoy making sure you don't get to do anything fun during a game, sometimes even locking you out all together.
that is not exacly a good thing, Garruk story arc is 99% done, the twins are basically the onnly thing still making his character relevant, and based on the news the Twins will fight each other. I can easily see he making some type of sacrifice to stop the fight or maybe even giving his spark to one of the twins
Ob Nixilis´ Flavortext gives hope that the Maestro are not all lost since in the story of march of the mashines it seemed like only Phabine and Errant (even tho she isn´t really a member) had survived while the rest of the family got turnes into phyrexians Also Sarkhan AND Narset being stucked on Tarkir could mean that we get to see the plane again and maybe there is a fight between the two trying to reverse the timeline (which in fact would set Nicol Bolas Free again probably)

I definitely want to see my favorite planeswalker, Jace Beleren, still holding his spark. But I also think the story deserve a break from him. I want to see him return at some point when they decide that it's time for a new multiplanar threat, which I'm sure will eventually happen (Emrakul breaking free, the slivers, Nicol Bolas being set loose, New Phyrexia phasing back in, whatever), and round up another Gatewatvh. Alternatively, let him return as the Guildpact again, for good this time.
You don't think he'll finally become the villain? Discarding the personal and embracing the compleation is an aspect of his charater. When first introduced they implied he walked a line between good and evil. imo it could be the best thing to happen to mature his character started in the identityless mental-reset phases.
1) The Planeswalkers I'm upset to see lose there spark are Sarkahn, Tyvar, and Koth. My reasons for them are quite simple. Starting with Sarkahn, we know of the other Dragons out there such as Beledros Witherbloom, Galazeth Prismari, and even some of the Kami Dragons from Kamigawa that I would have loved Sarkahn to interact with and many others that we've seen appear in these recent sets. Tyvar, he was a key player in the role of New Phyrexia's heist mission gta style lol. BUT, he didn't get much time to roam where he pleased or wanted to visit. He got Dominaria, New Phyrexia, and back to Kaldheim? Nope, he deserved better. Koth, he should have kept his spark. Same with Tyvar, he didn't get to do a whole lot of planeswalking recently, granted that was due to Koth being a super hero fighting against New Phyrexia, but there's more they could have done with him. I would have loved to see an different interaction with Chandra than just meeting her and Wrenn on New Phyrexia.
I wanted to see more Tyvar primarily because the story could honestly use more of his himbo energy. The guy didn't even realize he left Kaldheim for his first planeswalk (which was to Zendikar).

I really wish koth had kept his spark, and if they still have their sparks I wonder what will happen to garruk & Liliana, I really like them as characters, I'm still waiting for them to meet since their redemption arcs, I'm hoping Liliana can help ajani heal, and I wonder what garruk will do with the kenrith twins losing their sparks.
I feel similar about Samut, though she was done dirty, I feel. I would have really liked more of her early on, searching the multiverse for ways to fix her dying plane. Successful or not, it would have been cool. But its over now.
I am really hoping that those two are back to their right minds and still have their sparks, but physically are still phyrexian. I am also really hoping we see them again in Lost Caverns of Ixalan. Would be interesting to see how they interact with Quintorious, since we have reason to believe that will be the first time we get a Quintorious planeswalker card.

Im stoked that ajani is cured and still a planeswalker. I wish we got an aftermath story, focused on ajani, but maybe in the future we will get one sense there are now less planeswalkers. In terms of other people i want to see loose there spark, tbh idk i think the fun in it is to see who made the multiverse cut.
I remember when Teferi sacrificed his spark to heal the time rifts and stop the multuverse from being torn apart. I remember when Tefwei got it back again. Only way to be sparkless planeswalker is to be dead, otherwise, the writers will make it come back eventually when they need that character to be badges and relevant again.
One minor change to your explanation of Calix, Calix gained a spark after have an existential crisis about not being able to do it's only function. They set it up to have Calix become it's own identity from Kloyths, but I assume they'll drop that plot
I’m all for this new direction as I’m not a huge fan of planeswalkers. I’m glad Phyrexia isn’t completely gone and has a chance to return. I like seeing completed versions of favorite characters, it’s a nice suspenseful twist.

Wasn't what Nissa and Chandra encountered an indication that even though there are less planeswalkers now, travelling between planes is actually more accessible at this point?... Yes I agree. But for narrative reasons I’m sort of glad. They did want to protect their homes at least. And now they can be a part of stories that matter to them specifically
It would be cool to see a desparked old Planeswalker mentoring a new walker. The newbie makes all kinds of mistakes and the old walker has to help them even though they don't have as much power
The one I'm bummed to see desparked is Karn, my boi has been through enough just let him rebuild Mirrodin in peace so he can have his baby back. Though, that Karn as a unit is pretty great as a better blinkmoth urn for artifact decks.

While I love that Ajani got purified and kept his spark. I would have loved to gotten him as a legendary creature to make an Ajani tribal commander deck .
I'm both happy and sad that Ajani kept his spark. He deserves it, a chance to heal, even the multiverse saw fit to let him keep it to seek that healing. But this also means I can't make him my commander of cats. Now I'm conflicted over Angrath...will he keep his spark or become the new commander of my minotaur deck. He'd undoubtedly still brave the risks of traveling without a spark I wonder what made these the picks, why take or leave their sparks...?
I know you wanted to hear who else you think loses their spark, but I sincerely hope Garruk hasn't lost his. I feel like Wilds is certainly gonna introduce him again, especially since he's cured of the chain curse, free from Oko, watching the twins and not hunting planeswalkers anymore. Man still needs his opportunity to go to all the different planes and take down the biggest game to add to his arsenal of beasts to summon. Imagine him hunting down Sarulf's spawn or the other giant beasts of Ixilan. I will be very disappointed of we dont see him in Wilds, as even if he did lose his spark, he would be there with the twins, helping them fight Phyrexia.
Hopefully if we return to Tarkir we get an explanation as to why Narset is labelled as an exile, as if I recall, she wasn't exiled by the jeskai way nor by Dragonlord Ojutai. So either someone else is in control of the order (be it directly by usurping Ojutai, or indirectly by controlling the non dragon members of the order), or the reat pruning and invasion of the multiverse is causing the two timelines of Tarkir to begin crashing together
We know one planeswalker that has thier spark still, Chandra Naalar. She literally planeswalked to go and see if her mom is good and went back to Nissa. Chandra might be the next leader of a gatewatch type thing. Heck, she may find that elephant guy at random and teach him about being a planeswalker.
it would be amazing if we returned to zendikar with nahiri and Kiora as allies to rebuild and defend zendikar, while a secret black cabal of black phyrexians are using dead eldrazi and zendikar's energy to rebuild a phyrexian vampire hegemony who worship Sorin.
The upcoming stories may not focus on the next threat, but there will be teasers to what the next multiverse challenge is in whatever new arc is being brewed. My hunch from previous arcs and how the current arc was resolved, is that Eldrazi need to be dealt with next. To much damage to the fabrics between planes along with the meddling of the hedrons. I think we've seen the first big teaser already with the Commander Masters new Eldrazi being introduced, Zhulodok.

I soooo want return to the Lorwyn plane. It was my entry to mtg, and with Oona's death now could contain "good" faeries. Strong elementals, but hopefully also anti-elemental cards to balance them out.
Hopefully Sarkhan will get a new card in Return to Tarkir & get his green color back he had on his Unbroken planeswalker card. He could then become a member or the leader of Temur Clan. It would be cool for Narset to be one leader and Sarkhan being another leader. Maybe a Sarkhan X Narset lovestory will happen haha.
I’m glad that wizards are moving away from big universe ending drama and going back to smaller more meaningful stories. The characters should get more spotlight now than just, kill big bad.
I mean you can focus on the story of a plane without desparking a bunch of characters. Wizards made too many walkers and wanted people to stop asking about them every so often. They didn't want to kill them off so they stuck them back on their home planes and said oh they're just stuck there so don't expect to see them till we come back. They picked the ones that they barely developed and completed their stories for and the ones that they kept shafting like karn nissa and nahiri. I'm mostly sad rowan isn't getting another planeswalker card. I wanted a non chandra red walker that could focus on something other than burn damage.
If Nissa suddenly "got better" then all the walkers will get their sparks back because marketing. After the so called "story" of March of the Machines I've compleatly given up on any idea of a decent story out of Wizards.

I love Ashiok so I don’t want to see them lose their spark but I’d love to have them as a commander in replacement for my Unbrus deck and if they r trapped on eldraine we might get to see it I could also see them being the one to hold the knowledge of how to move threw the multiverse as it now exists in pursuit of their precious nightmares and horrors And can we just talk about how their influence on eldraine will hopefully give us some super cool nightmare/horror fairy tale creatures? Maybe the pruning is due to the destruction/imprisonment of the Eldrazi titans. I’m not sure why it would happen now. Perhaps their role in the multiverse was to stop the creation of wormholes, and travel to the location they stemmed from. Just curious to know why Ugin was so stressed out by the destruction on Kozilek and Ulamog.
Ashiok (confirmed to have a planeswalker card in Wilds of Eldraine) and Quintorious (heavily implied he will have his first planeswalker card in Lost Caverns of Ixalan). Have we had confirmation that Garruk still has his spark?
Meanwhile, Sorin's been sidelined so hard we don't even know if he's still a planeswalker or what the hell he was actually doing during the phyrexian invasion of innistrad.
Ever since Time Spiral block, the spark hasn't meant that much. Of course, that block changed what the spark was to create a problem that didn't exist before so it could fix it by ruining it.

So if we go off canonical power level based off who is A still alive and B still has their spark. That would leave davriel the multiverses most powerful plainswalker right? I mean he already was arguably the strongest even when bolas was at the peak of his power due to him housing a world soul as well. But with him retaining both his spark and said world soul which is basically an entire "realms" worth of power I think that pretty concretely puts him above all else, well that and the legion of demons he has at his beck and call.
in dnd terms this sort of blind eternities thing seems like an analog or at least similar to the astral plane with a bit of Ysgard, given it's being a transitive plane between planes and being able to grant powers to entities.
You're not entirely wrong. Blind Eternities are much more lethal, though. Anything organic passing through gets disintegrated aside from those possessing a planeswalker spark.
What if Emerakul knew about the phyrexian success in invading other planes and put herself in the moon to prevent that. And as a consequence planeswalkers are losing their powers and would have less of a resistance in consuming planes as a result to the weakened planeswalker states??? Idk

They should not have desparked alot of the newer characters. This was an opportunity to retire the older ones and focus on new stories.
We may see some older ones still lose their sparks. We don’t have a full list potentially. But yes I agree mostly

Starting with Sarkahn, we know of the other Dragons out there such as Beledros Witherbloom, Galazeth Prismari, and even some of the Kami Dragons from Kamigawa that I would have loved Sarkahn to interact with and many others that we've seen appear in these recent sets. Tyvar, he was a key player in the role of New Phyrexia's heist mission gta style lol. BUT, he didn't get much time to roam where he pleased or wanted to visit. He got Dominaria, New Phyrexia, and back to Kaldheim? Nope, he deserved better. Koth, he should have kept his spark. Same with Tyvar, he didn't get to do a whole lot of planeswalking recently, granted that was due to Koth being a super hero fighting against New Phyrexia, but there's more they could have done with him. I would have loved to see an different interaction with Chandra than just meeting her and Wrenn on New Phyrexia.
I wanted to see more Tyvar primarily because the story could honestly use more of his himbo energy. The guy didn't even realize he left Kaldheim for his first planeswalk (which was to Zendikar).

I really wish koth had kept his spark, and if they still have their sparks I wonder what will happen to garruk & Liliana, I really like them as characters, I'm still waiting for them to meet since their redemption arcs, I'm hoping Liliana can help ajani heal, and I wonder what garruk will do with the kenrith twins losing their sparks.
I feel similar about Samut, though she was done dirty, I feel. I would have really liked more of her early on, searching the multiverse for ways to fix her dying plane. Successful or not, it would have been cool. But its over now.

I do wonder how the Great Pruning will affect the leftover Phryxian Planeswalkers like Jace and Vraska.
I am really hoping that those two are back to their right minds and still have their sparks, but physically are still phyrexian. I am also really hoping we see them again in Lost Caverns of Ixalan. Would be interesting to see how they interact with Quintorious, since we have reason to believe that will be the first time we get a Quintorious planeswalker card.
@@snakeman830 Jace, after seeing the card Spark Double, and seeing some stuff he's been up to, no doubt, has a clone he can transfer his spark into. As much as enjoy Jace, he's Wizard's posterboy and a character they give way too many handouts to. He won't lose his spark.
Im stoked that ajani is cured and still a planeswalker. I wish we got an aftermath story, focused on ajani, but maybe in the future we will get one sense there are now less planeswalkers.
In terms of other people i want to see loose there spark, tbh idk i think the fun in it is to see who made the multiverse cut.
I remember when Teferi sacrificed his spark to heal the time rifts and stop the multuverse from being torn apart. I remember when Tefwei got it back again.
Only way to be sparkless planeswalker is to be dead, otherwise, the writers will make it come back eventually when they need that character to be badges and relevant again.

One minor change to your explanation of Calix, Calix gained a spark after have an existential crisis about not being able to do it's only function. They set it up to have Calix become it's own identity from Kloyths, but I assume they'll drop that plot

It would be cool to see a desparked old Planeswalker mentoring a new walker. The newbie makes all kinds of mistakes and the old walker has to help them even though they don't have as much power
The one I'm bummed to see desparked is Karn, my boi has been through enough just let him rebuild Mirrodin in peace so he can have his baby back. Though, that Karn as a unit is pretty great as a better blinkmoth urn for artifact decks.

While I love that Ajani got purified and kept his spark. I would have loved to gotten him as a legendary creature to make an Ajani tribal commander deck .
I'm both happy and sad that Ajani kept his spark. He deserves it, a chance to heal, even the multiverse saw fit to let him keep it to seek that healing. But this also means I can't make him my commander of cats. Now I'm conflicted over Angrath...will he keep his spark or become the new commander of my minotaur deck. He'd undoubtedly still brave the risks of traveling without a spark

I know you wanted to hear who else you think loses their spark, but I sincerely hope Garruk hasn't lost his. I feel like Wilds is certainly gonna introduce him again, especially since he's cured of the chain curse, free from Oko, watching the twins and not hunting planeswalkers anymore. Man still needs his opportunity to go to all the different planes and take down the biggest game to add to his arsenal of beasts to summon. Imagine him hunting down Sarulf's spawn or the other giant beasts of Ixilan. I will be very disappointed of we dont see him in Wilds, as even if he did lose his spark, he would be there with the twins, helping them fight Phyrexia.
Hopefully if we return to Tarkir we get an explanation as to why Narset is labelled as an exile, as if I recall, she wasn't exiled by the jeskai way nor by Dragonlord Ojutai.
So either someone else is in control of the order (be it directly by usurping Ojutai, or indirectly by controlling the non dragon members of the order), or the reat pruning and invasion of the multiverse is causing the two timelines of Tarkir to begin crashing together
We know one planeswalker that has thier spark still, Chandra Naalar. She literally planeswalked to go and see if her mom is good and went back to Nissa. Chandra might be the next leader of a gatewatch type thing. Heck, she may find that elephant guy at random and teach him about being a planeswalker.

The upcoming stories may not focus on the next threat, but there will be teasers to what the next multiverse challenge is in whatever new arc is being brewed. My hunch from previous arcs and how the current arc was resolved, is that Eldrazi need to be dealt with next. To much damage to the fabrics between planes along with the meddling of the hedrons. I think we've seen the first big teaser already with the Commander Masters new Eldrazi being introduced, Zhulodok.

Hopefully Sarkhan will get a new card in Return to Tarkir & get his green color back he had on his Unbroken planeswalker card. He could then become a member or the leader of Temur Clan.
It would be cool for Narset to be one leader and Sarkhan being another leader. Maybe a Sarkhan X Narset lovestory will happen haha.
I’m glad that wizards are moving away from big universe ending drama and going back to smaller more meaningful stories. The characters should get more spotlight now than just, kill big bad.
I mean you can focus on the story of a plane without desparking a bunch of characters. Wizards made too many walkers and wanted people to stop asking about them every so often. They didn't want to kill them off so they stuck them back on their home planes and said oh they're just stuck there so don't expect to see them till we come back. They picked the ones that they barely developed and completed their stories for and the ones that they kept shafting like karn nissa and nahiri. I'm mostly sad rowan isn't getting another planeswalker card. I wanted a non chandra red walker that could focus on something other than burn damage.
Maybe they got rid of Rowan and Will so that they could introduce their newest mono-red annoyance...

If Nissa suddenly "got better" then all the walkers will get their sparks back because marketing. After the so called "story" of March of the Machines I've compleatly given up on any idea of a decent story out of Wizards.

Maybe the pruning is due to the destruction/imprisonment of the Eldrazi titans. I’m not sure why it would happen now. Perhaps their role in the multiverse was to stop the creation of wormholes, and travel to the location they stemmed from. Just curious to know why Ugin was so stressed out by the destruction on Kozilek and Ulamog.

Ever since Time Spiral block, the spark hasn't meant that much. Of course, that block changed what the spark was to create a problem that didn't exist before so it could fix it by ruining it.

Well it’s no wonder that the fabric of the multiverse is in such a mess of a state… they swapped out an entire plane, for a city. That doesn’t equal out
So if we go off canonical power level based off who is A still alive and B still has their spark. That would leave davriel the multiverses most powerful plainswalker right? I mean he already was arguably the strongest even when bolas was at the peak of his power due to him housing a world soul as well. But with him retaining both his spark and said world soul which is basically an entire "realms" worth of power I think that pretty concretely puts him above all else, well that and the legion of demons he has at his beck and call.
in dnd terms this sort of blind eternities thing seems like an analog or at least similar to the astral plane with a bit of Ysgard, given it's being a transitive plane between planes and being able to grant powers to entities.
You're not entirely wrong. Blind Eternities are much more lethal, though. Anything organic passing through gets disintegrated aside from those possessing a planeswalker spark.

What if Emerakul knew about the phyrexian success in invading other planes and put herself in the moon to prevent that. And as a consequence planeswalkers are losing their powers and would have less of a resistance in consuming planes as a result to the weakened planeswalker states??? Idk
