I’m really glad there is choice. I love GTK & I know people who love Qt. People make what they want or need. Thats the beauty of OSS!

Same here. Choice is one of the things I love about Linux & open source overall. - Vincent

better to standardize apis one level below the gui, so the gui wouldn't matter

Qt is backed by a coalition of a company and some volunteers, whike GTK is run by volunteers mostly.

GTK doesn't play nice with QT desktops though? A good example is GTK doesn't show external mounted drives and network shares in QT desktops, where QT will play nice with external drives and network shares in GTK. Also cross-platform GTK sticks out like a sore thumb on other platforms, I immediately know when an app is running GTK when opening it, whereas I normally don't know something is running QT unless I'm looking at it's files or credits.
I don't think GTK should go away, I think GTK should be shunned as they currently act like the king-emperor of open source, and if you don't do things the way GTK wants things done, they'll stop their feet and cry and yell, especially when it comes to GTKs wayland bikesheds.
