A Cub in the Clouds (IFR/IMC) part 1

  • Just testing out the IFR/IMC capabilities of the Cub Crafters Carbon Cub FX3 on a day that was a little too marginal for fun VFR flying. I do get into the clouds for 10 minutes or so. The flight consists of a simple obstacle departure procedure from the base airport followed by an RNAV/GPS circling approach at a nearby local airport. Maybe my favorite part of this instrument setup is that I don't need any phones or tablets nor do I need any paper charts.
    Part 2 has the return with an extra practice RNAV approach to LPV minimums (200 ft DH).

    I enjoyed this flight! Excellent view of panel and over the nose! Having ATC audio, put your video way over the top! My dad and I flew vicariously with you! Feel free to post more with this same format!! 👏👏👏

    I miss that airport. Your departure took you over my old apartment building. I got my PPL up there in 2011.

    Excellent video sir, and excellent display of IFR knowledge and the IFR tools in your aircraft.

    Very Enjoyable I was stationed at JBER and I miss Alaska and those mountains. I like to watch what planes I am flying in flight sim just to compare the model and other then avonics its 90% the same.

    Really enjoyed this! I have a G3X, G5 backup, GNX 375, GNC 255, and the 507 autopilot head installed in my RV-14. She’ll fly in a couple of months. This is really cool to see you go thru the button pushing and what the displays show. Thank you!!

    This is so cool! Currently studying ground school for PPC, Love all the information you provide and seeing the procedures in real time.

    love the video! just curious, I'm in instrument right now and didn't know if i was missing something for cirlcing approaches, we were always taught to circle 1.3 miles from the runway and try our best to maintain that 1.3miles distance around the runway as we circle (at least in a category a plane), did you circle at the MAP or when did u start ur circle?

    • @EricMassey748
      @EricMassey748  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When I saw that the airport was VMC I decided to fly overhead the airport and join the traffic pattern to make left traffic for runway 16, and cancelled IFR on downwind. If it was IMC at the airport I would've needed to start the circle either at the MAP or at about 1.3 miles from the runway if I saw it that soon; I also would've had to circle west of the airport and not fly left traffic as is the normal pattern for runway 16.

      @@EricMassey748 ah gotcha! i don’t know why I didn’t even think of that when i watched haha must’ve been locked in on only flying instrument, kinda forgot u could just cancel and proceed vfr. Thanks for hittin me back love the vids!

    These Carbon Cubs don’t usually have pitot heat. Is that a problem for you when you fly IFR?

    • @EricMassey748
      @EricMassey748  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mine has pitot heat. It's nice to have but usually airframe icicing is the bigger problem, it will ice up in the clouds if the temperature is less than freezing inside of them.

    Why the gravel runway? Is it easier on the Alaskan Bush Wheels or tires in general? Nice video and plane!

    • @EricMassey748
      @EricMassey748  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, it saves wear on the tires. Thanks!

    Nice flight. I have always found IFR flying very cool, unfortunately as a Sport Pilot I will never get to enjoy it as PIC.

    question about the initial ODP: when they say "climb in BQG VORTAC holding pattern to MEA/MCA for route...", which direction is the hold at the VOR? Is it the grey holding pattern beginning on the 336 radial from the VOR with the right, downwind leg of the hold being on 175? Thanks

    • @EricMassey748
      @EricMassey748  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The ODP textual description says to "Hold north, right turns, 175 inbound".

    Hi there, very good video, new subscriber here, a friend has a kitfox that he recently updated to garmin g3x with autopilot and it does the trim corrections by itselves, the only difference with yours is that he has the GMC 507 autopilot panel, yours doesn't have the trim connected to do the necessary adjustments automatically? or maybe the servos that cub crafters use are not compatible with auto trim function

    • @EricMassey748
      @EricMassey748  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine doesn't have any automatic trim that I'm aware of. I've flown 3 different Carbon Cubs with autopilots using the GMC-305 and the human pilot had to trim when prompted by the G3X in all of them.
